BV may leave

Dec 5, 2021, 9:52 AM

But Clemson isn’t going anywhere. Clemson will remain the same regardless of those in charge.
Do you honestly believe that our football program will be destroyed if a coach leaves for another challenge? Ain’t gonna happen,

BV is a solid college football coach but he is NOT Clemson!

Remember how some were overly concerned when Clemson hired an unknown assistant named Swinney as head coach? That worked out real well.

I bet there is a DC out there who can’t wait to become a part of my university.

Dec 5, 2021, 9:54 AM

I honestly believe our program will start to struggle, and more than it did this year.

It was our defense that cost us in our last two

Dec 5, 2021, 10:03 AM

CFB Playoff appearances. How soon we forget.

Pump the brakes there

Dec 5, 2021, 10:15 AM

Pretty tough for the defense to succeed when they’re on the field the entire game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ohio State’s 21 point surge happened in the 2nd Qtr

Dec 5, 2021, 10:25 AM

Same thing with LSU they had a 21 point surge in the 2nd Qtr so don’t give me that “defense was gassed” crap. Some people go above and beyond to criticize one coordinator and make excuses for the other.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The defense was on the field the entire

Dec 5, 2021, 10:28 AM

First and second quarters because the offense repeatedly went three and out. Do you not remember this?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The defense was on the field the entire

Dec 5, 2021, 2:09 PM

No they weren’t. We were up 17-7 on LSU and then the defense gave up touchdowns on 3 straight drives. We were up 14-7 on Ohio State and the defense started bleeding points. We scored a touchdown on our first possession in the 2nd half and the defense immediately gave up a touchdown of their own.

Tiger fan you’re wrong . Defense cost us the past 2 playoffs. Offense could’ve done better. But our d allowed too many points. Bottom line

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Correction. He IS leaving

Dec 5, 2021, 9:55 AM

It's done. We might as well accept it and move on.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo 29-19 pre Venables .... this is going to hurt. Lets not

Dec 5, 2021, 9:58 AM

pretend.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly…. That’s why I’m not worried.

Dec 5, 2021, 9:59 AM

If he goes, he goes. Clemson will continue to be an elite program and we have the money to reel in the best DC’s in the nation. One man doesn’t stop the show.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We aren’t “reeling in” anyone

Dec 5, 2021, 2:00 PM

Dabo will promote from within

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: BV may leave

Dec 5, 2021, 10:00 AM

I agree and think Bates will do okay since he has been under BV and knows the system. The big problem is the elephant in the room. Our QB isn't even ranked in the top 100. Think about that. We have to deal with that problem. Also, I'm not a TE fan and think we could improve in that area. Why don't we address the most critical problems first and then worry about the DC. Bates can handle it next year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course. Coach Venables will always hold a special place

Dec 5, 2021, 10:01 AM

in the hearts of Clemson fans, but we will move on without him.

Well stated ST.

BV has been our best position coach/coordinator in my memory since 1979. He will be missed. Oklahoma is a landing spot he has earned.

Dec 5, 2021, 10:14 AM

this will hurt and Dabo not using the portal will hurt more.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly WHO did Dabo miss on in the portal last summer?

Dec 5, 2021, 2:07 PM

He’s on record as saying he WILL use the portal IN THE FUTURE when there is an OPPORTUNITY and a NEED.

So, how exactly has his reticence concerning the portal last year hurt Clemson so far?

Name some specific players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pretty much any quarterback that was in there

Dec 5, 2021, 2:12 PM

When TP tore his Achilles we were down to a walk on as 2nd string. Of course, no one knew DJ was going to struggle like he did, but we absolutely needed quality depth at that position.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What? No specific name? Come’on ... who was out there

Dec 5, 2021, 2:26 PM

just waiting to transfer and sit behind a 5-star QB who was doing Dr. Pepper commercials?

And speak from a July perspective, not a December point of view.

So ... who did he miss on, and why would that guy have transferred to Clemson, and how would he have made us a better team?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think we missed on anybody

Dec 5, 2021, 2:33 PM

because I don't think we even looked. I feel confident that there was at least one qb in the portal that would have jumped at the chance to play at clemson. Again. at that point (July), there was literally no depth at QB. Any D1 prospect would have been beneficial.
That's just my opinion. Maybe you're right. Maybe no QB in the portal would have come to Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m sure “some QB” would have come to Clemson. But

Dec 5, 2021, 2:39 PM

what difference would it have made?

“Some QB” was not going to be a difference maker.

Last summer, it was the total consensus that if DJ were lost to injury, the season was pretty much shot.

I just disagree that jumping into the portal for another warm body at QB was necessary last July.

I’m willing to see how Dabo operates with the portal going forward.

Re: BV may leave

Dec 5, 2021, 10:16 AM

People said Clemson wouldn't be as good on offense without Chad Morris. Clemson went to 6 straight ACC Championships and CFP appearances without him. They can do the same without Brent. Remember when Clemson got him to leave Oklahoma their fans weren't even upset about it. Maybe the culture and players make a bigger difference than the coaching X and O's?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What people said this? Many Clemson people were happy

Dec 5, 2021, 2:10 PM

to see the Chad and his bullheadded playcalling leave.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: BV may leave

Dec 5, 2021, 2:12 PM [ in reply to Re: BV may leave ]

That had more to do with Tajh Boyd, Lawrence and Bryant than Morris. Any OC would look good with those guys.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

^ This

Dec 5, 2021, 2:47 PM

We Deshaun and Trevor covered up a lot of sins.

Neither of the inherited OCs ever had to get really creative in those roles and Streeter never had to do much more than recruit. That showed up this year.

When a TE offense and undisciplined QBs/WRs in a pass-centric offense can’t bail out our defense, our Defense will flounder under anyone currently on staff — BV mentored or otherwise.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brent is a "solid" coordinator??? GTF outta' here with solid

Dec 5, 2021, 10:18 AM

He's the best in the biz and deserves your respect Son.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOL

Dec 5, 2021, 10:50 AM

this is the delusional side of our fan base that thinks we really have become Alabama.

We found a magic combination for a few years and they were glorious. We will remember them fondly.

They're over now, and the sooner you come to grips with that the happier you will be as a Clemson fan.

Re: LOL

Dec 5, 2021, 2:11 PM [ in reply to LOL ]

I’ve been around for the good times and the bad. One major difference this time is we still have our head coach and we are a national brand now. If Dabo chooses to bring someone in, there will be a bunch of high quality folks with interest. BV is the man no doubt, but there are plenty of great candidates out there. I hope we don’t promote from within personally. My biggest concern is BV’s loss as a recruiter.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Those positives will keep the low from being

Dec 5, 2021, 5:04 PM

what we've seen in the past. Struggling to make a bowl game or win the division on a regular basis is a thing of the past.

However, anyone who thinks we're just going to pick right up and be back in playoff contention after losing the best defensive coordinator in school history (and one of the best ever, period) is simply fooling themselves.

And that's before we know what the fallout is with recruits on the defensive side of the ball.

2024 student level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg2008_ncaa_champ.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-clemsonpoker489.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, hiring Venables was just a happy coincidence?

Dec 5, 2021, 2:11 PM [ in reply to LOL ]

Especially after Oklahoma had pretty much run him off at the time.

Dabo just played “blind squirrel” finding the perfect nut?

Man, that’s a pretty weak and cynical perspective.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, it was a home run hire.

Dec 5, 2021, 5:06 PM

But that was when Dabo was still building and trying to install his culture. Now he has it running like he wants and has repeatedly shown he prefers to promote from within.

Dec 5, 2021, 2:01 PM

Some of us are old enough to remember when we didn’t win the ACC and play in the playoffs every year. I’m not saying we’re absolutely going to but if you look at the graph we sure are trending that way

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: BV may leave

Dec 5, 2021, 2:09 PM

BVs unpredictable playcalling is the main part of our defense. We can easily go back to Bowden level defense with the wrong hire. Stop being such a delusional fan. They are the worst.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Didn’t Dabo get rid of the Bowden-era DC just so he could

Dec 5, 2021, 2:17 PM

replace him with Brent Venables?

Didn’t Dabo kinda demonstrate that he knew what he was doing and got it done when he needed to?

And he did it without the almost $3 million dollar hiring budget he has now.

Some of y’all are just too negative to be honest to goodness fans.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Didn’t Dabo get rid of the Bowden-era DC just so he could

Dec 5, 2021, 2:24 PM

Well West Virginia did score what 73 points against us before he got rid of him.

Some of yall are just delusional fans thinking BVs are easily replaced.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nobody has said it is easily done ... but too many assume

Dec 5, 2021, 2:32 PM

that it can’t be done.

With the biggest budget in the country at his disposal, why not lean toward assuming that Dabo knows what he’s doing and will make a great hire?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: BV may leave

Dec 5, 2021, 5:12 PM

Agree that we should be fine. Clemson will be Clemson but an elite football program is not a birthright. The coach, particularly the head coach, matters immensely.

Clemson was still Clemson with Hatfield, West and Bowden. Great coaches like Dabo are rare and we are fortunate he is here and “bloomed where he was planted.”

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed, but there oodles of DCs out there that’d love to

Dec 6, 2021, 12:30 PM

Come to TigerTown, but getting one as brilliant as Brent is the key
