True chicken story

5

Jun 9, 2023, 1:06 PM

Years ago on the farm my grandmother was bitten by a copperhead snake. My grandfather and the housekeeper knew exactly what to do. They began rounding up chickens from the pen and sticking the chicken's butt against the fang marks. The poison was pulled out to the detriment of the chicken. It took over a dozen chickens to save her life. I'm told that she complained bitterly that "they're killing my chickens".

A true story from a Ft. Motte farm.

I never heard that remedy for a copper head bite before. Since I have an old 100 year barn where I keep chicken feed, I'm always on the look out for copperheads but it's the one you don't see that will get you. I guess if it takes a dozen chickens, I better get a couple more.

BTW, how did she do with bacterial infection from the chicken butts?

I'm going to ask that if anyone here sees me get bit by a copperhead, to not spend anytime rounding up chickens but to go ahead a rush me to the hospital.

Also...jellyfish bites...just let me suffer.

Copperhead bites are seldom fatal for a child over 75 pounds, so adults usually do not have too much to be worried about. If I got bit by one I would certainly go to the emergency room, but it should not be too big of a problem.
