Bates says sour taste of Ohio St. loss led to C.H.I.P.
Todd Bates and members of the Clemson defensive line walked off the field in New Orleans to close out last season with what Bates called a “sour taste” in their mouths after getting physically whipped by Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl. Bates knows that if the Tigers want a better result this season, it starts with being more physical upfront. Full Story » |

whole different crew except for Freshman Tyler Davis

That LSU year was very inexperienced and well over matched. Davis was our best DL and he was 18. It was a stark, stark contrast to the years prior where our DL were men among boys.

And we didn’t get blown off the ball against LSU. They had two of the best receivers in college football plus an awesome RB. Their offense was Elite! Our DBs could not keep up point blank period. We actually came out and messed up their Rhythm to start the then they settled in the started throwing bombs. OSU just straight up smashed us in the mouth. Two different games. Hope to see us change that this seasons

against LSU? Our line got dominated in that game.

WE had to play man to man against their WR's b/c our DL couldn't get any penetration and Burrow was picking us apart. So we had to blitz our LBs to try and get pressure. DL and DB's go hand in hand. The reason why our DBs stifled Tua and Bama is b/c our DL could rush 4 and still get pressure as well as clog up the running lanes. Without that defensive line our DBs probably would've gotten blasted that year as well. Our D lines have been the reason why we have gotten beat the past two years in the CFP. But that is youth not talent. I've got a good feeling this year will be different.

We’re talking about two different things. I guess I’m more referring to running D. I saw OSU literally blow us off the ball and out physical us. We were using 3 down lineman on purpose against LSU because of our lack of DL talent but they didn’t smash us in the mouth and blow us off the ball. Now I agree we weren’t getting much pressure once they figured out how we were using our LBs. But I saw our 4 down lineman get straight pushed back and OSU ran the ball at will against us which opened up the pass for Fields. But I’ma go back and watch the LSU game again to refresh my memory

Exactly!!! Complacency has no place on a team where the young men believe their team is of championship quality, especially when the team they're playing believes they are of the same quality!!!!

My take is LSU had much much more talent across the field - skill players and defense. As for Ohio State, they physically dominated the Tigers in our win and in our loss.
But it’s a challenge for Bates and D-line to get any level of competition in practice from consistently undermanned and soft Tiger O-line and soft ACC schedule. That’s why Dabo and coaches make the big bucks to figure these issues out. I see some changes on o-line this year, and hopefully we will see much more through the season as Leigh and redshirts come up to speed.

Losing occasionally is good for you. Builds character.

Every program loses. They even lose in embarrassing fashion. Alabama sometimes loses badly (44-16) and then comes back as strong as ever.
Clemson fans have begun to believe that every season that doesn’t end with a national title was a failure.
Not sure how our fan mindset got to this point. There is certainly no historical basis for such arrogant expectations.
If we aspire to be the very best ... if we want to displace Alabama at the top ... then we need to see losses like the past two years as opportunities to improve.
Go Tigers!

Doesn't matter what us fans aspire to....
Aug 3, 2021, 9:56 AM

... the team has to believe and work harder than the team they're playing. As our high school coach used to tell us, games are won or lost before the season begins. We went undefeated with that mindset (lost in the state title game.) And yes, they were simply better prepared and more physical.

Fans are the lifeblood of the game. Without the fans there is very little reason to compete. Of course what they aspire to matters. Players work hard because they want to perform at their very best ... in front of their fans. Any athlete who says the fans don’t matter is deceiving him/her self.

so how did that affect players who played to empty stadiums last year? Did they play with any less intensity? Nope. Competitors compete.
As a formet D-1 college athlete, and now just a college sports fan, I can tell you the one delusion most fans have is thinking the players give a sh$T about the fans. It's nice to have someone chanting your name, but it's not why you compete.

Laughable sandlot machismo philosophy with no basis in
Aug 3, 2021, 12:38 PM
|

No basis in fact.
Last year the players unanimously lamented the lack of fans and frequently said how much harder it was to get motivated. And this was a situation where the games were still televised to millions of ... fans.
Players absolutely hated empty stadiums. If we see another shutdown, you will see just how much fan support means.
It was grudgingly tolerated for one season. It won’t be taken lightly again.
Fans are the lifeblood of the sport and adulation of the fans is a big reason kids want to compete.
Otherwise, who is going to support their NIL?

My only statement in support of Bug, and I am not a former athlete, would be if fan support is not important, then why is there a home field adavntage? Also, you routinely hear athletes say they feed off of the crowd energy. I guess that's two statements. Anyhow, maybe its just wishful thinking but I like to believe that I help in some small part bring victory to our Tigers. I sure as heck feel the losses!

A large part of the "home field" advantage indeed is crowd support ... especially when the home crowds are loud - for those breaks in the action when you actually hear them.
Some other advantages of playing at home is familiarity with the field, environment, food, normal routine, and not having to travel - that can take a toll on your body and affect your recovery and sleep.
You're generally more at ease in an environment that you are familiar with, and that generally translates into a real advantage.

I agree ... competing was the goal ...

I was on the Clemson soccer team way back in the late 70's to early 80's. We were ranked #1 for most of the season in 78 and 79, won the ACC both years, and finished 3rd and 2nd in the country, respectively.
Most of the time we drew around 1,000 fans, sometimes more, but that didn't matter because competing at a high level was the goal.
When the ball went out of bounds, there was a goal, or a stoppage, you would hear the sounds, but when you're on the field, focused and in the zone, you normally don't hear anything except your teammates ... unless it gets really, really loud.
I'm sure the football players that play in front of 81,500 screaming fans surely hear them, but as far as from a purely competitive point in front of smaller crowds, I hardly ever heard them while playing.
Having said that, would I rather have a whole lot fans in the stands watching, of course!! ">
GO TIGERS!!

That's good, but don't make the Ohio State mistake of focusing on them. Focus on a national championship instead of being obsessed with one team. When Ohio State won last year, their season was complete and then Bama kicked their butts.

It certainly didn't help that our defense wasn't ready and set when the ball was snapped. We have to get our defense called and the defense set and ready to play quicker. We got totally exposed by them last year.

I agree! Too many times the D-Line is looking over to the sideline for a last minute adjustment. If that big OL gets you in a compromising position "turn out the lights"! That puts our DL in bad spots at times. Playing old school offenses who have habits - you can do that! Up tempo teams with just as much or more talent on the field as the Tigers( we struggle )! I agree! The key to our DB's not looking great the last two years has been how "pedestrian" our DE's especially(but whole DL) has looked in pressuring the QB. No pressure and you have to start sending a safety or LB's - it's game over if that offense can handle the blitz. Tigers have to get pressure by just using 4 DL. Meaning the DL depth has to be outstanding! And the will to compete like your hair is on fire on every down has to be there. I agree! The LSU game was a different animal. Their passing game was so awesome; they could gash us almost anytime they wanted to with the run. They did it just enough to keep us(BV) guessing! That offense may never be duplicated in CFB ever! Hot OC, QB, Multiple, WR's/TE,RB and their OL was better than advertised!
