What have you done for me lately?

Sep 8, 2021, 11:12 PM

Like it or not, that is the environment today in big time college athletics. It’s the price to pay for real time news, internet message boards, record coaching contracts, social media, and now NLI. Coaches make more, players benefit more, and fans expect more.

The reality is that we are 1-4 in our last 5 games against top 5 teams. This includes:

-A 10-3 loss to #5 Georgia this past weekend
-A 49-28 loss to #3 Ohio State this past January
-A 34-10 win over #2 Notre Dame in December 2020
-A 47-40 loss to #4 Notre Dame in November 2020
-A 42-25 loss to #1 LSU in January 2020

A lot of the frustration and disappointment right now is not just because we lost to Georgia, but because of our recent trend of losing to top 5 opponents.

If best is the standard, we are falling short.

Fans are understandably upset. People pay a lot of money to IPTAY to support the program. People devote a lot of time to support the team. We have one of the highest coaching staff budgets in the country, and have among the nicest facilities in college football. With these investments, as well as our incredible success over the last 5-6 years, comes high expectations.

I don’t know what the answers are. I’m not supposed to know, because I’m not paid to find those answers. What I do know is that it’s the coaches’ jobs to find them and implement them. And I believe they will.

I believe that we have a program full of competitors. They don’t like to lose. They care a lot. And they are determined to get better. I suggest that we all get behind our team, with the understanding that they aren’t perfect. We might lose some more games this year. We might not. But let’s support them regardless.

I am confident that Dabo will make any necessary changes at the end of the season. I’m proud of our football program and what it stands for, and wouldn’t want to be a fan of any other.

Go Tigers!

I started to give this post a thumbs-up until you failed to mention that in those 4 losses, one of them, the loss to OSU last year, OSU clearly wanted the game more, that in the loss at Notre Dame last year we were without our starting quarterback and 3 defensive starters playing in a stadium where very few teams ever win, or that against LSU in January 2020 14 other teams failed to notch a win against what was arguably the best team in college football that year.
Now I will say the loss to UGA Saturday night was a shocker ,but maybe ,just maybe ,top to bottom, they are just a better football this year.

When Georgia loses to a nobody SEC team this may not age well, but I agree it is possible that with all that talent, Georgia may have finally found a way to win with it. We can only hope they win out and we somehow get a 4th seed spot to unseat them

Are you kidding ? Their offense was better than ours but

I don’t see them scoring a ton of points this year ..

I think we're going through a rough patch and I , like you ...believe that Dabo can and will make any necessary adjustments as he sees them.
Meanwhile , we can all take solace in what our futbol team is doing!!

Goodness, if this is a rough patch then we are daggum lucky.

We’ve definitely got some issues, but our schedule is so horrendous I’d still bet we win 10. From here on out , the biggest game is against the chickens in order to make sure this area is still fit to live in . Can u imagine losing to the dawgs and chickens in the same year. Who knows , we could have a new QB by years end due to who knows what and the chickens actually give us a game.

We need a new OC and new OL coach. Its that simple. We also need to raise the standards. The ACC sucks and we have become soft because it is so easy. When. We play a real team we are blissfully unaware and blindsided.

I am not confident in Dabo making changes. The problems now, were problems 3 years ago. They may be working on the issues, but I do not believe any “changes” have been made.

To me the offensive problems need just as much attention as the defense needed pre Brent. Also, it’s obvious that our shortcomings on defense usually centers around inexperienced personnel that get better; not the same as the offensive woes. We wasted ETN and Trevor’s senior years seemingly through nothing more than arrogance and stubbornness.

One thing for sure...Dabo is slow in making changes or is he hardheaded. Our OL has been a problem for many years and we continue to do the same old thing every year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have the same concerns you do.

Sep 9, 2021, 4:41 PM [ in reply to Re: What have you done for me lately? ]

These aren't new problems, and it's hard to understand why things haven't seemed to change since they became evident. I'm trusting Dabo because he's an excellent program builder and has taken us to the pinnacle. If he didn't have that track record, I would not be optimistic that he is willing or able to make the necessary changes.

Records against top 5

Sep 9, 2021, 8:02 AM

According to Mark Packer, Dabo has 8 wins against top 5 teams. UGA has 4 in their entire history including Saturday night.

Sep 9, 2021, 8:24 AM

Football has far more support than the basketball program, but their performance still falls short of the standard.

Did I read between the lines correctly there? I think I did.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But is winning all of those realistic? As a

Sep 9, 2021, 8:42 AM

Clemson Fan, I would say YES. We deserve to win. We should have won.

As anyone that follows CFB, NO. There are winners and losers in every game. Bama gets beat. UGA lost to the coots. $hit happens, we lose, time to move on. It's life.

Sometimes we win, enjoy the moment. I remember the #4 to #13 pass like it was yesterday. I remember the domination of Bama in Cali and the very cold celebration in the Valley on a gray January Saturday.

Enjoy the season. November will be here way too soon and we'll wish we had more season left.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, it isn't realistic to expect to win every game.

Sep 9, 2021, 4:46 PM

But I do think it's realistic to expect our team to have a good game plan going in, and if that doesn't work, have the ability (or at least the willingness) to adjust and make changes.

I didn't feel that our game plan against Georgia was good, nor did it seem like any reasonable attempt at adjustments were made.

If it were just about the Georgia game, I would tell fans to get a grip and realize how good we have it. But we are seeing a concerning trend against top competition lately.

It's hard to ask fans to bask in the glory of the 44-16 domination of Alabama when that seems like a long time ago. A lot of time and money has been spent on football since then, including a couple of blowouts to teams we were expected to be competitive against.

You must not know what the phrase

Sep 9, 2021, 10:41 AM

"best is the standard". Not surprised, most people don't.

BTW, repeating statistics of scores, wins and losses is common, public information that everyone already knows, and is wasteful and superfluous. I'm afraid you've got "Hood"-ism.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If "best is the standard" needs to be explained

Sep 9, 2021, 4:52 PM

because people don't understand it, then perhaps it's not a very good catch phrase.

I believe it means that we should always strive to do our best. It's about having high standards in all that we do. It is not a guarantee that the standard will always be met, but it is a guide toward how we should approach things.

Given that, I don't feel that we have achieved that standard during most of our games against top competition over the last couple of years. Do you disagree?

Finally, I am flattered that you would compare me to DavidHood®. I'm not worthy of that, but I'll take it.

Plus ....

Sep 9, 2021, 10:56 AM

I honestly think you should help us all navigate through the difficult weeds of "Overhyped" stars who came in with lots of hype and rating but simply did not pan out. I think there are a few basketball examples, for sure.

Seems I remember a player for Clemson by the name of "Bynum" like this - about a 6-7 kid I think from SC. We may be facing this with our QB. The jury's still out on it though, and there aren't even any more real good tests right now on the schedule to know the answer.
