Deal reached on background checks in Senate

Posted by
CNN Political Unit

(CNN) - Sens. Joe Manchin, D-West Virginia, and Patrick J. Toomey, R-Pennsylvania, plan to announce a bipartisan deal on background checks for gun shows and Internet sales at an 11 a.m. press conference today, CNN's Dana Bash has learned.

A Democratic leadership source says the compromise will likely be the first amendment to gun legislation being considered, after the Senate votes to begin the gun debate Thursday.

The breakthrough background check agreement is a key part of gun legislation. Because it has been struck by two senators with strong support from the NRA, they hope to find the 60 votes that will be needed to overcome opposition to pass their amendment

The senate is expected to debate gun legislation for at least two weeks.

Re:Two Politicians Using Each Other To Get Reelected

Apr 10, 2013, 1:08 PM

Doesn't matter. It will fail in the house. Too much crap in the bill that has absolutely nothing to do with background checks. Toomey is trying to look like a moderate and is catering to the Philly and Pittsburg loons. Manchin is a democrat in a gun owning state and is using Toomey to shield him from Republican's using the background check against him in his reelection bid. In fact, both are using each other for political cover. Typical politicians who care only about getting elected and staying elected.

Pittsburgh is a pretty conservative blue collar town.

Apr 10, 2013, 3:17 PM

Both R's and D's are right of average in that town.

Background checks are fine, but what people have a huge problem with is the fact the government is trying to eliminate the private sale or even inheritance of firearms among family members. If someone wants to pass on their firearms to their children, why the hell should the government have any say-so in the matter?

House ..cars... is already like that..***

Property tax.

Apr 10, 2013, 4:31 PM

Guns do not fall into that category unless you have a special tax stamp or Class III license to own suppressors and full auto rifles (pre-1986 of course)

And posted why I think those two examples you gave don't even qualify in the same category. So, instead of just saying wrong, why don't you run along and find someone else's ideas to C&P here.

boi and his scock balm are completely ignoramouses re. guns and gun laws. They don't know jack chit about them. Typical liberals who want to control everything about other people's lives.

The Dems bill wants to force background checks and government approval on any firearm transfer/sale. Some want to ban the transfer/sale to family members altogether. Basically saying the firearms will be illegal after someone passes and those guns are not turned in and destroyed. Thankfully though I have high hopes that those stipulations will be dropped from the proposed bill.

Apr 10, 2013, 4:55 PM

they did, no background checks on personal sales, just gun shows and internet.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And I support that

Apr 10, 2013, 5:05 PM

But I thought Internet sales still had to go through FFL dealers, hence background checks are performed. I've never bought a gun online so please correct me if I am wrong.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

but gun shows and the internet already require background

Apr 10, 2013, 5:36 PM [ in reply to Re: you may want to check that ]

checks. That doesn't make sense. The gun show loophole that everyone talks about is some people will bring a gun and try to sell it as a personal sale in the parking lot etc... Then it is just a personal sale no background check. The dealers at gun shows all require you go to through the same background check that you have at a gun store.
