How many of you have downsized/changed operation hours, etc since COVID?

I am close to going that route. I have hired 10 guys in the last month to fill 2 positions. Today had my 8th no call no show, for what was suppose to be first day of work. Even though I called and verified last week he would be showing up today as he was working a notice.

One of the guys who actually did show up, worked 1 day, laid out the next, showed back up the following day, then no showed no called for over a week, then finally called, claimed he had covid but was ready to come back, I knew that most likely wasn't true but I need a guy so told him to come back, and shocker, he never showed back up, lol.

The other guy who showed up was so inexperienced, he was a danger to everyone so I had to let him go after a couple of hours.

It's just become such a frustrating cycle over the past two years, I think I'm just going to take less work, and really focusing on continuing to become more efficient.

$20-$25/hour + benefits

$20 would be industry average
$25 above

pays based on experience

work force since last year this time. From what they are telling me, we have not seen a similar downside in revenue, or work being performed. We've automated a lot of the work, and the rest we've gained by tailoring to hiring paying customers, and doing more, similar work for them.

different thing entirely. We lost a great one after 2 months - another offer she could not refuse. Hired her replacement who quit before she even started. And I had to pay both more than I wanted.

So APM is not playing that game right now. My wife is helping in the office (she was already bookkeeper anyhow) and I am trying to wait this out before I hire again.

If I do hire (we will probably try this month), I am setting a strict number of hours and hourly rate. Take it or leave it. No negotiation. Bojangles is ready when you are.

(do I sound bitter?)

I get that, but I think you are going the wrong direction.

Jan 31, 2022, 2:33 PM

And I say that because even though we are firing some of the rank and file, we're also hemorrhaging IP creators and the technical talent it takes to run a tech company. It's killing us.

Treating (potential) employees worse won't help you at all...especially in an environment that literally anyone who wants a job can have one doing something. Or even two jobs if they want it.

Oh, we treat people great. It's what we can afford.

Jan 31, 2022, 2:39 PM

I won't treat someone badly. I am just being very black and white about what we can and can't do.

Consulting Engineers...

Jan 31, 2022, 2:41 PM

We're back to over pre-COVID employment. Made 2 recent hires and looking to add two more. We're ~30 employees.

Our 2021 revenue was up compared to 2020, but not quite at 2019 levels. Part of the issue was 'winning' jobs that we wrote fees on at the start of COVID when the economy cratered so they were low. Then won and did that work in 2021. Revenue should be way up in 2022.

Our labor pool is college graduates with engineering degrees. So it's better than most fields. We also pay very well (start at $65k, pay majority of HC, 5 weeks PTO, 4% 401k match, bonuses). That said, the latest round of hires (<5 years) don't work that hard, nor are willing to do anything above and beyond. It's blatantly obvious who will be the leaders in the next 5-10 years.

And hours of operation have gone out the window. Pre-Covid we were a ~8-5 business. Now it's whatever you want, just get your work done. Most are WFH part of the week. Some don't start their day until 11am. And TBH, I don't take any issue with it as long as they get their work done.

It's a fine line between revenue and profit. If you can keep the same profit (net, not percent) on less revenue through efficiency, that's a no brainer.

Jan 31, 2022, 2:54 PM

Right now I definitely can.

I'm turning down work every day, despite having raised my rates an average of almost 40%.

I own all my equipment, own my property, don't owe a dime on anything which helps too.

I just have such a great opportunity to grow and would be more than willing to invest the money, If only I could find help. That's the frustrating part.

This is good information to go off of.

After reviewing your situation, I have determined that posting several pics of your wife's beefers (and possibly her exposed brown eye) will fix your issue.
