Brownell needs another 12 yrs to get his players

Mar 14, 2022, 4:39 PM

You can't expect him to win based off what Purnell left him 13 yrs ago.

Everybody knows the lack of success is due mostly to KJ McDaniels leaving early.

You are right. Brownell actually did win an ncaa game in his first year with OP's talent. Something OP failed to achieve. After the first year the talent was not close to the talent Purnell had/we have now.

Sure Purnell left the program in a better state than he received it and sure brownell could have used OP's NCAA appearances in recruiting, but that's putting lipstick on a pig. When brownell took over we had the worst facilities, worst history, and worst funding in the ACC. But we went to the ncaa tourney and lost in the first round 3 years in a row!!!

Brownell didn't get any further than OP in the Tournament his first year. He won a play-in game.

At some point he was going to run out of OP's players and have to recruit.

Worst funding, facilities, and history and...He still made it to the ACC championship game, had ranked teams, and really good recruiting classes. You make a really good case for how good OP was here.

Correct. We did make the acc championship game 1 year. It was the year that only 3 ACC made true NCAA tourney. In that tourney he won 2 games, which were 2 of his 3 ACC tourney wins in 7 years.

He did finish a few years ranked in the 20's. Good for him. Those years were fun, but ended in disappointing fashion.

And lastly, his recruiting. He definitely was a better recruiter than brownell. He actually only
Had 1 class that had any fire power and it ended up being very overrated. He definitely had the eye for talent as he hit in several under after players such as Trevor booker, cliff hammonds, if rivers, etc

I may be wrong, but I don't think Brownell's ever won more than a game in the ACC tourney and has never upset a higher seeded team.

The point isn't that Purnell is the greatest coach ever, it's that he was better than Brownell. He had to deal with exactly the same issues Brad had with the addition of trying to recover from the Shyatt years. He turned us into a consistent program from that mess. He couldn't seem to get over the hump in the tournaments which may have played some part in him leaving.

After 12 years we have not returned to that level of consistency and he took over a program primed for another tournament run.

I agree with some of what you said. The only difference in OP and BB's success/failure in the ACC tournament is that OP beat Duke 1 year in the tournament. If that's how you are basing your opinion, then that's on you.

I think brownell is the way better coach. OP was able to recruit better players.

I can see reasons for firing brownell as well as keeping him for 1 more year and seeing how it plays out. Regardless, next year is sure to be entertaining.

I'm not basing my opinion of the two based on the ACC tournament. They both generally struggled OP at least made it to a championship once. I'm basing my opinion of where the program was when they took over and where they left the program.

You can't separate recruiting from coaching. It is an integral part of the job. IMHO, he's really good at preparation. He's an average gameday coach. He's a great person. He's a below average recruiter. He's an average developer of talent. He's average at identifying talent. He's a good motivator. What he's truly terrible at is connecting with the fan base and getting people excited about basketball.

actually he needs 26 years to match Coach K's tenure. Maybe in that time frame he can win at least one ACC regular, or Tournament Championship.
