If players don't have to commit to schools for the duration of their contract

... why should schools have to commit to them?
First off, replace the word "scholarship," with "contract."
I'm starting to feel like these offers are about to be based on how good the player is, the available openings at the particular school, and that the contract will be a two way street where both parties agree to all terms (one being that if player doesn't fulfill the entire contract, said player must pay back the entire tuition/fees/room & board/etc. that the contract covered.
Example: a 3-star high school WR that Alabama needs for 1 season for depth purposes only receives a 1-year scholarship contract. There is not commitment beyond that since Alabama has a guy committed in the next class that's a 5-star guy that they plan to sign for 3-years.

Brilliant & sorta cuts thru the BS that players are Students first!

Saying, We All know these “student/Athletes” for the most part are being brought in to a college football program primarily b/c they can help the team win by throwing, running, punting or stopping those that do the first three..and Not that they are students First!
Saying, it’s been a big fat lie for 100 years and the players themselves are saying it is in that they want $ over education, or maybe both reasons equally at a culture that Clemson has.

That isn't the way that it works with Dabo. If he signs a kid, his scholarship is good for as long as they want it.

might as well quit using the word "commitment", or "commit", as it no longer means 4 years or for any duration, really. It'll have to be this: "(John Smith") announces his INTENTIONS to play at (Central Uni)".... (puts hat on, yada.)

Because we need them. If you want to act harsh to them they will go elsewhere. The most player friendly schools will get the best players.

Your thoughts are pretty reasonable. The current situation is much like NFL free agency, but without contracts. Don’t bother telling me that the scholarship is a contract. It might be a contract but it’s far from the contract NFL players sign.
Bottom line is college football needs a governing body. I don’t like more government and oversight, but right now this is chaos; lack of rules, lack of parameters, lack of commitment, irrational bidding wars, etc.
We don’t need a oversight from a public entity. The sport needs oversight from a “league” and commissioner, i.e. NFL MLB NBA all have a league and a commissioner.
With that said, I’m hoping we have a good enough team in 2022 that we can sneak in a Natty before this gets really chaotic.

The thing that people complaining about the portal don't understand is, scholarships have always been on a year to year basis.
College programs for decades have been taking kids scholarships to replace them with better players before allowing them to graduate...now with the portal kids are on a level playing field....the same way a school can be disloyal and cut them...they can be disloyal and leave...
Everything that's wrong with NIL and the portal is just the kids acting how the majority of universities have always acted

Players really don't ""commit"" to schools now*** with the portal,________ a player can jump out of his signing letter of intent, before he even gets to the first practice or to school for that matter
"'letter of Intent"" is just a formality now and nothing else

The NFL just needs to start a farm league

where kids can skip college altogether and go straight into the minor league football system (like baseball).
This way everyone can give up the facade of getting a scholarship for educational purposes.
