Pretty Amazing Note From Bowl Prep RE: Clemson

Dec 22, 2021, 3:12 PM

Doing a little pre-Christmas bowl prep and ran across this nugget in the notes.

Not sure what I would have guessed the answer to be had I not seen the notes, but I don't think I would have guessed the answer being only 4.

Only Four Tigers (OT Jordan McFadden, OL Walker Parks, LB James Skalski and QB DJ Uiagalelei) started every game this season on offense or defense. That's 4 of 22 positions!

Every other Clemson offensive or defensive starter has missed time or played as a reserve at some point this season.

Had we benched DJ and Walker Parks (as suggested in the message boards), that number would have gone to 2!

That just seems, and probably is, an unprecedented stat for this most unique of season.

Right. But injuries didn’t contribute to our “down year”.

They most certainly contributed

Dec 22, 2021, 3:19 PM

and I am not sure that fact is debatable.

Now, if you want to say that we would have still be 9-3 because of our erratic play at key positions even if nobody got hurt, I can hear that argument.

But come on...losing 20+ players and no impact? I don't buy that for a second.

May not have changed the record, but it certainly had an impact

To be fair, injuries did not cost us the GA game. At NC State we had 3 players out, Lynn J, Tyler Davis, and Fred Davis. I think you'd be hard-pressed to say that cost us the game. For the Pitt game, we were missing Dukes, EJ, Ladson, Ngata, and Jake Venables. Some impact on receiver depth but did those players really cost us the game?

We definitely had more than our share of injuries across the season but in our 3 losses, I'd have to say poor execution, play calling, QB accuracy/decision making, and some questionable coaching decisions/game planning, were much more drivers of our losses than key injuries.

I do expect us to regroup and have a solid season next year. This was just one of those years where the breaks were not going to go our way.

I pretty much agree with your assessment, but wasn't the NC State game where we lost Bresee? It would have been nice to see him play that complete game. There's a chance he would have made a difference in the outcome with his QB pressure but who knows?

Although NCSU game was razor thin and tied

in regulation, we were outplayed by a sizable margin and I feel like State could have been more aggressive at times if they needed to be.

I don't know if the injuries change the 9-3 record. The State and Pitt game...maybe change...maybe not. Hard to say.

But, we win more games like the Wake and Scar game if we have close to full roster instead of all of those nailbiters.

the games against UGA and NCSU were razor thin

Dec 22, 2021, 3:47 PM [ in reply to Re: They most certainly contributed ]

hard to just say things wouldn't have been different. Davis was out for UGA as was Turner and the center who had won the job, broke his hand 3 days prior to the game. NCSU was a tie game in reg. I'm not going to go back and review list for that game but I do know that Breese was hurt during the game and with Davis out, believe Goodrich or Booth was injured also and Jones had to go in and believe he gave up 2 big OT plays(on coverage) and he may have had the hold also. That said, there are always are going to be some injuries but ours were excessive this year and some were very key players at key times

I understand your point on the GA game but most of the key players out were on defense, which clearly was not the issue in that game and a starting center wasn't going to help our offense that night.

All good points by everyone and in-game injuries and players available but not at 100% certainly had an impact. But the opponents also had their injury challenges as well and I just felt like the other reasons listed that hurt us were much more impactful in our losses than key injuries which really was the main point I was trying to make.

Bresee could have made a difference in the losses....***

How do you rationalize that????

Dec 22, 2021, 4:05 PM [ in reply to Re: Pretty Amazing Note From Bowl Prep RE: Clemson ]

There is no question that it did.

Myles did not start vs. NC State and UConn...but played in both games.
Simpson did not start vs. Pitt but played in game.

Did you forget the scoop and score by Tyler Davis against UGA and then a 2 pt play? It happened in the Meta-verse! With your All Conf DT out it can make a difference.
