Braves trade top prospect to KC

Jul 11, 2022, 4:23 PM

The Braves finally deal Drew Waters away... he would probably be named their next #1 prospect once Michael Harris has enough official MLB at bats, but Waters has stalled out with a very high K rate. The Braves will receive Pool Money (2.2M) and the 35th pick in next weeks Draft. A change of scenery may do him well in a low stress environment & he definitely has all the tools to be a success, but the ATL is in WIN NOW mode once again.

I am not saying it was the wrong move. But how does "win now mode" match up with trading a AAA player for a draft pick? That's the opposite direction.

The reason he was dealt is accurate - stalled out, along with him now stuck behind Michael Harris who is playing very well. But it's not related to "win now".

Quite simple. They’re good on outfielders***

Turn the 2 picks into high end college guys

like they did with Jared Schuster who may be MLB ready sooner than later. Also need to get a catcher to develop as a backup for Contreras down the road. They need to re-stock the farm for the future as the only big timer left (other than a pitcher) is SS Vaughn Grissom.

I'm ok with it, they are so loaded with young talent right now they can afford the move, especially on the pitching staff. They'll have 2 picks in the 1st round (20 and 35) to make a couple moves and get players at needed positions. One thing I don't worry about is the Braves Farm System.

They got the slot money for the 35th overall pick in the draft, which is like 2.2$ million.

That’s not cash. That is basically additional budget for the draft…that budget is how much they have to spend. If they don’t sign whoever they draft at #35, their budget decreases by $2.2M.

I’m no math expert but adding to the budget means more $, right? Pretty sure AA learned his lesson when he drafted that pitcher out of HS who currently plays in the Japanese League currently. Carter Stewart ring a bell?

It means they are allowed to spend more on this year’s draft picks…but it’s coming out of their own pocket. They are not getting cash from the Royals.

Braves also acquired Cano from the Padres today.

Jul 11, 2022, 5:48 PM

Good player but he has really struggled at the plate this year.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

In the starting lineup & batting 9th

DFA'd Phil Gosselin...not a big loss. Maybe Cano can balance out all the RH hitters some and run into a few fastballs. Arcia has been playing very well--better than Ozzie at the plate as he makes good contact most of the time.

Seems like they gave up quite a bit for this pick but what do I know. Waters definitely had no spot on the team and neither did the infielder but seems like they could have used Waters to get a MLB ready player.

Stinks because he’s a hometown boy. I know his parents. Good people.

Ditto. I don't know his parents that well but we have a lot of mutual friends.
