Best defensive line ever at Clemson

Jan 15, 2014, 9:09 PM

One of the old timers might need to set me straight but how do you think this one stacks up.

Vic Beasley = speed rush freak athlete 1st round pick

Corey Crawford = big bodied run stopper and pocket mover 3rd round or higher

Grady Jarret = criminally underrated and still an honorable mention on the all ACC team if I recall correctly. This man tackles like a MLB from the DT position.

DJ Reader = most unheralded man on the line. An absolute force who commands double teams often and could make a claim to being the most often held man on the line. Very athletic for a man his size.

That's just the starting 4. depth is Lawson Ebo Pagano etc.

That dude was nasty. We used to have a life-sized poster

Jan 15, 2014, 9:16 PM [ in reply to Best in a while...don't know about best all time... ]

of him. Probably worth a brazillion dollars by now. For the young folks, the commercials "Daa Bears" you see now are a direct result of the Fridge with the bears during their undefeated season. He caught a TD pass too didnt he?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Quite possible, I think he scored a rushing TD in the SB...***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes he did that. Thought he had caught a TD pass too

floating around back in the day (made by his HS coach, maybe?) showing him squat jumping up and down on a training table. Crazy strong and agile for a guy that big. I bumped into him (literally) in T Town tavern one night. He just smiled with that gap toothed grin and patted me on the head

hehe great story***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

his point was that the skit was inspired by the 85 bear team

Jan 15, 2014, 9:28 PM

of Clemson legend- you'll be glad you watched it. It is historic even for nfl, not just CU legend- watch your tv and you'll see commercials referring to it to this day.

was unbelievable. I knew, right then, that the Fridge was going to be a man when he grew up.

I was there and still remember this play from that cold, windy, day at College Park in 1982. That MD back was big, maybe 230, and had a head of steam when he met the fridge. It was like he hit a stone wall.

Jan 15, 2014, 9:14 PM

gaines and michael dean were, inmho, the best individuals we have had, but this combo is deep.

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think it would be a stretch to see them all in the 2nd round or higher

Jan 15, 2014, 9:15 PM

If we fix the back end of the defense this could be a nightmare type defense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i go back to '77 team and i'd have to say that

Jan 15, 2014, 9:17 PM

they're in the discussion but the proof will be on the field. That crew we ran out there in '81 with Fridge, Devane, Perry, Otis Moore, and in my opinion, the best DL we've had in my lifetime, Jeff Bryant, was a nasty crew. Michael Dean Perry is the best DE we've ever had in my opinion, but big #99 Jeff Bryant played all 4 positions on the DL and was in the backfield all day. It remains to be seen but that's why they play the games and they'll have their chance next year. The '88 and '89 DL's were out of control too. The '89 defense is the best bunch of wild dogs i've ever seen with Paws on the helmets.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'll take best since '81

Jan 15, 2014, 9:19 PM

Add a chad Morris offense and it might produce similar results.
