Anyone on this board enjoy peaches???

Aug 10, 2019, 1:57 PM

For those who know me . . . You know I've been associated with agriculture for over 40 years . . . I travel parts of Georgia, all of SC and NC and the southern portion of VA . . . I have eaten peaches from all across the peach ridge . . .

If you're interested in my opinion on where to find the best peaches . . . Head here:

Cotton Hills Farm, located on Hwy 321 just north of Chester, SC
(owned by Jeff Wilson, his two sons are Clemson Grads)

You will not be disappointed!!! We are nearing the end of the 2019 Peach Season so don't hesitate!!!

(Cotton Hills Farm is 130 miles from me . . . I went there yesterday, bought a 1/2 bushel for my bride and me and another for my oldest son in Cary, a devout peach-aholic!!! Then I drove 200 miles to deliver them to him . . . They are that good!!!)

They must be awesome for you to drive that far! I get some good ones here in the northern Atlanta suburbs but I would bet yours are better.

Where do you get your peaches in North Atlanta?

Aug 10, 2019, 8:18 PM

I don't see myself driving to Chester (though, I'll tell some friends and family in rock Hill and charlotte about them).

Sometimes the little fruit stand on Hwy 9 between Bethelview Rd and GA 20 has them, along with wonderful cantaloupes, watermelon and tomatoes. Otherwise, I just buy them at the grocery stores.

Peaches are my favorite fruit. I get mine at Fisher's over near Greer. I generally buy a bushel at a time ($55.bu) and share with some of the people here at Clemson Downs. My daughter picked up peaches there on Wednesday. Don't know the variety but they are some of the best tasting peaches I've ever had.

My fist job ever was picking peaches. I did from age 13 to 18. Hardest job and hottest job I’ve ever had. That was back in ‘83-87. Can’t find kids to do that job anymore. Ate a lot of peaches those days and got my fill. I never buy them. Watermelon, it’s the best.

Strawberry Hill (3097 Highway 11 W, Chesnee, SC 29323) has peaches. I prefer the Freestone ones that typically come in around July. They are the best IMO. I think Strawberry Hill's owners have daughters that are CLEMSON grads.

As much as I love peaches, I have eaten almost none this year. Weird for me.

Bought some today from Strawberry Hill O’Henry and Monroe***

I too am a peach-aholic

Aug 10, 2019, 7:35 PM

I ate a 25 pound box I bought from McLeods in McBee. We made peach ice cream last weekend, I ate so much I had to put on a jacket!
Thanks for the tip!

I worked at a peach cannery when I was 15 and 16 at Jones Brothers. The brand was Greer peaches in a big red can. We loaded cases of them on to train cars. It was hot work but we were young and it didn't bother us.

McLeod Farms Bear Florence has some of the best peaches I’ve eaten. The first ones that come out that have a reddish pulp are so sweet and juicy you have to eat them over the sink or hold them in a dish towel. I don’t know what kind they are and they are definitely different than the ones later that have a whiter pulp. We put up 4 cases of them this year and have already used about half of them in homemade ice cream

Thanks for the compliments on our peaches. I'm one of Jeff's sons and an '03 Clemson graduate. The peach season is almost over. We grow them in the town of Lowrys which was also home to Clemson's first all American Mr. O.K. Pressley. His son Kirk Pressley still lives in Lowrys and has some wonderful stories of his father's playing days. He's always willing to share them if you're passing through and can catch up with him at his boot store.

Amen, Skeet! The Cotton Hills Farm fellas are some of my really good friends - excellent peaches, produce, and pumpkins in the fall! They host one of those Science Channel Punkin’ Chunkin’ catapults at their Fall Farm Fair every year - great festival to hit up.
