Actually, if I'm reading the barrel top correctly, Rye.net. Lil score from an Edmund's Oast leftover, pretty sure it had beer in it for a couple months. It's pretty uncommon to get barrels that still have distiller marks on them--they usually black them out to prevent secondary marketing ("try this Edmund's Oast Stout aged in a Willett barrel!").
Anyway, need to figure out exactly how to recondition and finish it, and would like to turn it into a cabinet when I have the time to do it.
If 6350 is the barrel number, 60xx-63xx are a low-rye mashbill rye.

you could do something far more legendary and go over Niagra Falls in it. I'm mean, it's your choice how you want to be remembered here...everyday ordinary handyman, or death-defying daredevil.

Go ahead and cut the side out and dry out the barrel for a few months, then spray the heck out of it with some kind of sealer or something.
I mean unless you want the room you have it in as a cabinet to smell like stale beer and liquor forever.

How would you do a cabinet?

If you cut it in half longwise you'd have to somehow cut through all the hoops. Pretty sure it'd probably just fall apart at that point? I guess you could cut it parallel to the hoops to make a cap or two halves. Is that what you are thinking?
Also: Others have said it already, but I would lavish some attention to the bunghole for sure.

It's 11/26/13. They use letters for months since there are multiple J months (although wouldn't a number like I just translated it to work the same?)

Something along these lines.

You'd have to attach the staves to the rings, but probably not too difficult, either glue or a screw in each.

Even the unfinished, dirty barrel in the driveway this afternoon, she's like "Coooool. I love it." And not even sarcastically. Occasionally, she hits the mark.
