Is Tajh Boyd Clemson's Best QB ever? UPDATED 1/02/2013

Nov 5, 2012, 1:18 PM

After hacking off many PPL on my last thread (not intentionally), I'll stay off recruiting issues and move to some less controversial....Like the best ever..

I used the term "The Best" on purpose rather than "The greatest"...Greatest is a tough one to live up to and Tajh may qualify for that eventually....

But "The Best"...I am inclined to think so. Having watched in person people like Steve Fuller, Homer Jordan, Woody Dantzler, even Charlie Whitehurst I have to say right now Tajh is "The Best"......Our offense is so complex that not many people can run it as well as Tajh does........Granted, TB has great receivers to throw to, but his passes are usually perfectly placed making our great receiver's jobs a little easier.

Guys like Fuller and Jordan were great winners...but they ran offenses that were far less complex IMO. A lot of smash mouth running, some options and enough passing to make it interesting.

01/02/2013:

Tajh made a huge leap into "Greatest" range. I have not seen that type of play since Homer in the Orange Bowl, Steve Fuller in "The Catch" game and Fuller in the 1978 ACC Championship game against Maryland.......This was one of Clemson's best single games ever.

I think you hit on the fact the era's and job requirements vary. I think so far statistically and what he is required to do complexity wise probably so. I'd want to see his full career but he certain appears poised to be the best we've had given what the job now requires.

Hard to say. Let's evaluate in 2 years.

If he finishes his career with 2 wins over the coots, that'll make me much likely to say yes.

Even with him owning all the clemson passing records when he leaves if that is not coupled with a winning record over the coots, it will be hard to view him as the best.

Will always have a special place in my heart for Charlie W after he went 4-0 against Coot U + 1st & 35 was awesome.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I personally feel that he is a good quarterback. Solid

skills all around. He's putting up some great numbers, but he still has room for improvement, and also has an incredible supporting WR cast. I would put him up their with some of our best QBs ever, but I think it is still a little to early to say he is the best.

Yep he has the numbers and I love what he is doing. Hard to compare eras and what was asked of the QB. Fuller did it all and I really do not remember many bad decisions in '77 and '78. You're right we have had some good ones!

From this standpoint ONLY, we have to wait to see where Tajh falls.

Having said this, can UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, be left out of a conversation that mentions Fuller, Dantzler, and Whitehurst. Did I forget, Rodney Williams? No, I did not.

Nov 5, 2012, 1:32 PM

he's easily in the top three IMO and he's just a junior. If he returns for his senior season (especially if Nuk returns also), he will likely eclipse every QB record on the books at Clemson and anyone would be hard-pressed to present a compelling argument to the contrary.

When it's all over and Tajh's complete resume is available, he very well could be the best of all time.

Nov 5, 2012, 1:34 PM

I have'nt seen a Clemson QB with his mechanics and touch-on-ball. His sense of timing and quick release (especially sidearm) are impressive. To say the least. One of the TD's at BC to Nuk was literally jaw-dropping (among others).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No. He's great, and he deserves accolades, but you must

Nov 5, 2012, 1:37 PM

consider the level of competition, and the importance of the games. If Tajh leads the team to a BCS win or even a MNC next year (if he returns) then maybe. So far he is running up great numbers against weak teams and he had a good first half against FSU. Not enough to be considered "best ever".

Nov 5, 2012, 2:02 PM

What everyone is forgetting is he has a record of 18-5 as a starter. With no supporting Defense. What the others on everyone's lists had that he didn't was a great Defenses. If Tajh had half the Defense the rest had we would be in the running for Clemson's 2nd MNC this year and possibly back to back next year. That in itself puts him in a league of his own.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes - emphatically

Nov 5, 2012, 1:52 PM

Hard to compare, but given the complexity of the spread. His proven ability to see multiple receivers, coupled with accuracy is the best I've seen since I've been attending, 1978.

Nov 5, 2012, 2:53 PM

especially when the defenses stacked the box didn't have to respect the pass. Fuller and Jordan were integral parts of the running and passing game.

Taj has really worked on his running. So I'd say he is really close to best ever.

There is no doubt Tajh is the best and will be the greatest before he goes to the NFL!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Very possibly. When you look at the overall package of

Nov 5, 2012, 3:30 PM

arm strength, quick release, accuracy, touch, running ability, decision making, and leadership, he's right there.

His arm strength I'd put right there with Whitehurst, if not better. He probably has a better, quicker release than any of them. His accuracy is as good or better than any we've had - he can really thread the needle. He throws a better, more accurate, catchable deep ball than anybody we've had in my lifetime. He's not nearly as good on his feet as Dantzler, not as good as Jordan or Fuller, but he's much better in that department than Whitehurst and probably on par with Rodney Williams. His decision making is shaky at times, but has improved tremedously since last year. He is a great leader, right there again with the very best.

We've had some good ones, but when talking about the very best, Tajh has got to be in that conversation.

If Tajh comes back for his senior year (and I believe he is almost certain to do so), he will OWN the record books. I know stats are not everything, but it's a great place to start. If we win a NC next year (and I think we have as good a chance as anybody)he will be BEST and GREATEST.

Re: Is Tajh Boyd Clemson's Best QB ever?

Nov 5, 2012, 5:46 PM

Harvey White was a great QB in the 50's and did go to the pros. It was a different era though, no black players and a lot more running. Tajh is going to be the best ever in another year.

His stats are boosted by the system we run. But if he can't beat Carolina then he will not even be in the talking of being Clemson's best QB ever. IMO, that belongs to Whitehurst.

Whitehurst was the best because he beat USC 4 times? No doubt, Chuckie was good, but did you see that pounding that Boyd took last night? Hands down the best QB to ever have a tiger pawl on his helmet. Hats off to this young man and his heart. Put the team on his back last night and lead us to a program changing win. Proud of him.

Charlie would have been pretty dagum good in this offense. Tajh's new found ability to run will make this offense really click and will cut down on the offense's turnovers and will increase our ability to convert on third downs. He will win over 30 games as a Tiger in 3 seasons if this continues.

I understand the talk of a weak conference and system and so forth, but he did deliver us a conference title, and we didn't have one for a long time. When history looks back, it will see a title, not anything else. As for the best? How can you possibly compare? Boyd is really, really good!
