The NW corner of SC near Long Creek when they were creating Lake Hartwell. Although they didn’t give credits, many USC grads were casted as the locals…

Dickey was actually a poet.

The only novel/book he wrote was Deliverance. It has always been speculated that he intentionally wrote it to be a movie, because the screenplay and book are nearly identical. And of course he wrote the screenplay.
When Reynolds’ career was in the tank when he had gotten older he offered Dickey a #### ton of money to write a sequel because he knew it would be a huge hit. But Dickey said no.

Lake Hartwell was impounded long before deliverance was filmed. Most was filmed in the Clayton area. The part you are thinking about was when Jocassee was filling up.

Cannonball Run was not cited. Talk about your cast of notables. LOL The outtakes were better than the movie itself.

I worked as an extra in that movie and actually got to spend a fair amount of time during breaks talking to Farrah Fawcett. That whole experience was a ton of fun.

A little-known fact. There was a guy in the movie who did impersonations as part of his character. His name was Rick Aviles. His other claim to fame; he was the guy that killed Patrick Swayzee in Ghost.
I ran into him at a comedy club in NYC in the early 90s. He was a great guy who unfortunately passed away in 1995.

White Lightning was my pick as well. A low budget early 70s Southern redneck classic right up there with "Walking Tall", "Billy Jack", and "Midnight Man" (filmed in Clemson.

Based on one of the Great American Novels. One of my most prized personal possessions is a letter from James Dickey. I attended his memorial, with his former personal assistant. I felt like I had the honorary spot representing those who admired Dickey's literary greatness.
