Saturday morning update on coaching search for coots.
Dec 5, 2020, 9:10 AM

(I'm getting used to typing that word. I may need a 2nd word just for variety.)
This is what I have found surfing the net this morning. I won't link all the sources, but these are not what I found because someone on a message board just posted them. These are from people who claim to be at least somewhat in the know about the search. Pick whichever one you like best and go with it. You are as likely to be right as anyone else.
1. Deal has been made with Napier. 2. Deal has been done with Beamer. 3. Hugh Freeze is the leader. 4. Beamer is using Gamecocks to get leverage for the VT job. 5. Freeze is holding out for the Tennessee job. 6. The two finalists are Beamer and Satterfield.
Drat, I can't find anyone saying that it will be Brian Johnson.

Bobby Hartin, long time sports radio guy here in Charleston
Dec 5, 2020, 9:23 AM

ex-Coot cheerleader and president of the Charleston gamecock club, pretty well connected guy, as well as long time sports guy Phil Kornblut, both said Friday that they are hearing it’s down to Napier & Beamer and most people are thinking Beamer will be the guy. Reports are he was in Columbia and had a longggggg meeting with the AD.
The consensus is Beamer but people are questioning whether the AD And the new school president are on the same page. Some people think the new president, who has ties to a few other people, may want to bring in his own person. If that were to happen it’s probably because Ray Tanner is on the way out the door as athletic director. Not by his own choice either!

That's sounds like the most plausible explanation of what is going on there. President didn't hire the AD. It is not unusual for a President to bring in his own AD before the AD makes a big hire. I have no idea what the relationship is between those two.
But, from day one I heard this rumor:
There is a division in the administration. Some want Freeze, others are adamantly opposed to him. If he doesn't get the job, it is Napier's if he wants it. If Napier turns it down, then Beamer is #3 on their list and he will take the job.
What you posted is not exactly that, but is consistent enough. I can see how there is a disagreement in the group of people who are making the decision on who is hired. Whoever they hire better do his due diligence. If he is not the choice of the president, his leash will be extremely short. He needs to have a long chat with the president, without the AD being in the room, before accepting the job.

I read that Napier is interviewing today.
I think Napier or Beamer would be a great fit & hire for them. I’d give them a 7 year contract starting at $2.5 million with a built-in raise at year 3 & 5 and a bunch of incentives and bonuses. With all pay raises bonuses and incentives contingent on contractually obligated metrics for discipline, academics, and of course performance on the field.
Hugh Freeze is not the guy the president supports. I heard A couple of names that people think the president would bring in because he has a past history with them, but I cannot remember their names. From what I remember they were not household names. Not guys that you think would be on the list. I doubt many fans would ever be happy with someone hired by the president because you know their priorities are much different that wins and losses!
Clemson people know this better than most since Max Lennon axed Danny Ford and helped bring in Ken Hatfield. It took 20 years to recover from that mistake!
Back around ‘90 or ‘91 me and my Clemson roommate were roommates together in Columbia and we drove down to Tallahassee and spent a week partying (It was the year the citadel made it to the College World Series because that was going on while we were there) and looking into jobs. We were thinking about moving down there and working and partying for a few years! We thought it would be a lot of fun. I didn’t get a good offer at the time but about six months later I was called and offered a great job with the Florida Department of revenue (I was a finance major at Clemson ‘88) but my situation had changed and I was getting ready to move back home to Charleston. I finally made it to Florida ‘99 and lived a while in Clearwater and on Clearwater Beach and then down in Sarasota. That was back before Southwest Florida totally blew up and got overdeveloped. It is absolutely beautiful down there. Boca grande is like being in the Abaco ‘s!

I grew up calling them the chickens. My father called them the chickens. I have a hard time with "coots" myself. I suggest chickens as your alternative.

I call them coots despite the fact that it’s disrespectful to even a lowly coot!
I remember shooting at a coot when I was a kid on a duck hunt and my dad was like what are you doing? Don’t shoot at those stupid Coots. That’s a waste of good ammo! LOL

Thanks. I would shorten it to chicks, but that might be considered sexist. Another word for chicken is "biddy." As in "here, biddy biddy biddy."
Maybe I should call them "biddies" as in "itty biddy" biddies.
Hey, I'm getting the hang of this "demean your rival" stuff, huh?

What a clown show it is down there. It won't matter who gets the job they are still going to suck. They have nothing to sell to recruits other than playing time. The facilities stink, the campus stinks, the town stinks, the team stinks, and their tradition stinks. If two hall of fame coaches couldn't do it an up and comer certainly isn't going to do it. The only reason Spurrier had a couple years success was because they benefitted from recruits bailing on Clemson when Tommy Bowden was fired.

This search like last one. USC was first with vacancy when Spurrier resigned and one of last to find head coach. With this delay it has to be a coach who is still coaching. If not Tanner has to be replaced. Loads of money down the drain - shoot if any of us wasted .01% of what Tanner has squandered away, we would lose our job. Great baseball coach but not fit to run FBS athletics department.

Evidently The offense sucking and the head coach wanting to go in a different direction and play a different style of offense after a losing season clearly isn’t good enough reason for this guy. Maybe he would prefer Dabo not make any changes and get fired a few years later.
Interesting he would say not for the right reasons when you look at where our program & offense is now!
I’d say Dabo’s decision to fire Napier worked out pretty well for both of them and Clemson.

They should give the coot program the death penalty. It would be a mercy killing. At least they could blame that for the next couple of decades as to why they suck so bad.
