Blue Bloods

Jun 3, 2022, 1:45 PM

I would put Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Michigan, Texas, Penn St, and USC in that group.
In addition to winning, what do they have in common?
They have had more money to invest in their programs (especially in the old days when there were fewer rules), which translated to more winning.

Things like more rules and cutting scholarships to 85 helped other schools and hurt them.

In this new era, it seems likely that the schools with lots more money will again take over. For example, in addition to all their normal money, the OHS coach is asking his base for $17mil in NIL money.

How many schools can raise an extra $17mil? I would say the above can plus Miami, Florida, Georgia, TAM, TN, Oregon. I think schools like Baylor and even GT will surprise.

Maybe not $17mil, but Atlanta is a rich area to tap. It is true that many in it pull for UGA.
Consider this:

"In his four seasons as Clemson football coach, John Heisman won three SIAA titles: in 1900, 1902, and 1903. Heisman was the undisputed master of Southern football". - Wiki

So what happened?

After the 73–0 defeat by Clemson, Georgia Tech hired Heisman away. He was 102–29–7 there.

Money talks and loyalty follows. Going forward, each season will be a $$ bidding war for the best players. Some teams will have a lot more to spend than others.

$$$$$ talks

Many schools with less $$ to pay players with will still get some good players; maybe less of the best players, but good players with potential.

Now colleges develop those "good" players into better players over 4 or 5 years.
In the new era, players who are "developed" will be offered large $ to transfer.
Will that make schools with less $$ into sort of a minor development league for the schools with more $$$$$?

I fully expect the SEC to "attack" the 85 limit with great

fervor ...

They don't need non-SEC teams getting quality players to challenge their dominance.

Bear Bryant would give every kid in Alabama a scholarship to keep them away from other schools.

Here is a fun note.
Most see Chadwell as the man behind Costal.
The real guy is the man behind Chadwell.

Joe Moglia coached there for 6 years. Then he personally hired Chadwell.
Joe still runs the program, and is the largest benefactor.
As a billionaire he can now buy better players. He is way beyond the average booster, puts his time and money into it. Will he spend $$$ on that?

There are many blue bloods but it depends on if you are talking about the last 100 years, last 50 or last 20. There is no question in the last 45 years we are more blue blooded than Nebraska, Texas, Notre Dame or Penn State. If you look historically the last 50 years, you have to include Michigan, Georgia, Miami and Florida to name a few. A quick look at our facilities and coaches salaries tells us we have as much to spend as any school. Schools do not have or use NIL money but they may encourage their fan base to employ athletes.

Clemson is not Blue Blood. We are a school that has won recently "with less" than those. You can look that up.

"blue bloods" and "Blue Bloods" are not the same.
Blue Blood is a traditional term applied to schools that won before there were rules. I guess you could call the winners over the last years Red Bloods.

After rules, many ignored them. Some new colleges like Florida State, Georgia, and Miami joined in with endless under the table cash. TN put it in McDonald's bags.

Facilities has been one way to cash in. That will mean less now. All the top schools have great facilities. A trunk full of cash will mean more to a player than a fancy locker.

Danny Ford and Vince Dooley were recruiting Herschel Walker, and on signing day, Herschel walked back and forth between the two trailers that CU and GA had on site and finally walked out of the GA trailer with a huge suitcase in his hand and a smile in his face. A day or two later the Athens paper had a picture of Herschel sitting on a brand new Harley in front of his mother's brand new house. And coach DF was charged with recruiting violations a year or two later, but Vince Dooley never, ever suffered so much as an investigation into GA's practices. Money has always been and will ever be a recruiting factor in CFB. Except for coach Dabo... so far.

Go Tigers!!!

The sky is falling.

There's too much $$$ at stake for college football to go back to the days where a few schools ran everything. Has the NCAA's ineptness, the Transfer Portal, and the NIL permanently maimed the sport? Possibly.

One thing I'm 100% sure of is that we're not going back in time. If the current system only supports 10-15 schools that can legitimately compete for a NC then those schools will soon find themselves playing alone.

You don't leave schools Clemson, UF, FSU, UGA, Miami, etc....out of the mix and grow your revenue.
