As a current student, I can tell you we're not gonna have good basketball attendance until we start consistently winning. It's really pretty obvious. Just look at the way the Miami football attendance has plummeted over the last decade. Simply put, win and they will come.

Bad comparison. CU and Miami are nothing alike. Winning will help but CU PEOPLE ought to support hoops far better than they do period

CU fans do support BB
Feb 28, 2015, 7:23 PM
[ in reply to Re: Blossomgame tweet ] |

the true die hard fans that just love the game of basketball no matter what. The problem is there are not enough of those fans to fill out an arena, and there never will be. Your average everyday fan supports teams that win. Someone can be a fan of Clemson University and still not support the BB team especially if they really don't care about BB. An average fan wants to go to a game where they fill that the team they cheer for has a high percentage chance to win, and people are not filling that with Clemson right now no matter who they play. Put a team on the court that wins some decent games and has a chance to win on any night and you won't be able to find a empty seat in Little John. It's not just a Clemson problem or a basketball problem it's just the way the majority of sport fandom works. Let Duke have several .500 seasons in a row and I bet they won't be playing in front of a packed house.
Just look at football. Not so long ago under Bowden we were having a very tough time selling football tickets and filling out Death Valley. No students wanted to go to the games and I remember all the talk about how parking problems kept people from coming, we were letting in to many out of state kids that didn't really care about Clemson athletics, ticket prices were just to high, etc. A couple 10 win seasons later and you can't find a football ticket or a empty seat no matter who or when we are playing.
The field of dreams saying holds true in sports, build it and they will come. For basketball it's not building a new arena or putting a new coat of paint on the current one but building a program on the court that is competitive and a winner, build that and they will come.

Wholeheartedly disagree. Clemson is special b/c where it is
Mar 4, 2015, 4:17 PM

One of the reasons I love Clemson so much is because it is where it is. Part of what makes Clemson Clemson is where it is. "Where the Blue Ridge yawns its greatness". It's right there in the Alma Mater. I probably wouldn't have attended Clemson if it was just another small lowcountry school.
But Clemson isn't just another small public school. It's in one of the most beautiful parts of the state. I could go from the middle of campus to a beach on a lake in 15 minutes. Within 30 minutes, I have three different lakes, each of which have their own awesome aspects. The mountains are only 45'ish minutes away, and I can be on the Blue Ridge Parkway in about an hour or so. I could spend years hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking and never do it all. If fishing is your thing, there's lot of it.
The student body is so fit, happy, and active because of where we are. It's hard to be sad when you are in a beautiful place like Clemson. No matter where I move to, I'll always feel the pull back to Clemson. My wife and I want to retire there because of how awesome the area is.
Move it to Cola and you lose all of that. We'd just be a small landlocked public school in the armpit of the state. No mountains, probably no lakes. Forget about all of the outdoor stuff. Forget about "Where the Blue Ridge yawns its greatness".

Hogwash. Clemson is great thanks to the people .....
Mar 7, 2015, 9:06 PM

not geography. Have you seen how beautiful the SC lowcountry is? The average beach house costs far more than mountain houses. Show me fat people in LA or Miami. Ever seen the babes at CofC or Coastal. More people boat, fish, surf, kayak in the lowcontry than rock climb or snow ski from Clemson. The outdoor opportunities are larger in the lowcountry.
I love Clemson, think it's awesome, and I love the town and the area, it is special, but so are rural areas in the lowcountry and such a location would increase fan support, attendance, and money.
And I never ever said IN Columbia, get your facts straight. But there are some beautiful rives & rural areas near Columbia.
One of the main reasons USC has more fans is geography. With the massive population growth in SC since the 80s, Columbia has attracted casual fans that grow into supporters. Football fans move to SC and since Columbia is central to that growth many become coot supporters. The biggest fastest growth is on the coast.
And for the record, saying Clemson is just another school if anywhere else is not only stupid, but spitting in the face of the Clemson family and community. Geography has zero to do with that my friend.

I'm in Charleston, but even if I lived in G'ville, unless it's a big game or on the weekend I'm not driving to Clemson to watch a mediocre team play another mediocre team. I love Clemson and I'm passionate about Clemson sports, but it's not my life or a top priority.

It really is.
Given that neither of us has been part of the student body in a while, doesn't it seem like the marketing for Clemson bball has been off for a little while? Or is it just a general lack of interest in college basketball among students these days? I know that the handful of people I know who've graduated in the last few years seemed to be almost completely unaware that basketball games were going on. We used to go to every game we could, and we weren't great my first couple of years (Purnell's first couple of years).

schedule while I was there because it was never really that known. We were in school at similar times, I remember going to every game of our 17-0 run and watching the attendance go from less than a 1000 to 7000 or so.
I freaking wish I could go to the games for free, and lived closer. I'd go to them if I lived within 100 miles, but 300 miles is just too much.

The number of student orgs has exploded, as has the various club and intramural sports programs. You aren't any less of a Clemson Tiger by spending your time doing these other things, you still represent the school. Often against other schools. Hell, we're vicious rivals with GT in club rowing.
It's not as cut and dry as so many of you make it out to be. It's not like everyone is sitting in their dorms instead of going to see a bad basketball team play.

And oh how wrong you are. I was in basketball pep band back in 2004 when we were absolutely hideous. We had better attendance at the women's games than the mens. We were absolutely dreadful.
This is not some "recent" phenomenon. The OP era was the exception, not the rule. Clemson basketball goes way further back than when you attended.

Winning teams sell more tickets. People get excited about exciting things. A relatively meaningless game vs Gtech isn't going to motivate college students after night of drinking.

Motivate the students too attend.
Motivate. Really?
Think about your statement and relate that to anything that is provided FREE to you. What more motivation do these kids need?
They do not want to attend. They want to do other things... Study, drink, play video games, watch TV, sit on their A$$ES, WORK, volunteer... Whatever.
It is sad that with a student body population of 21,000+ (16K+ undergrad, 4.5K postgrads)... 500 students cannot find the interest to attend games consistently. 500 that would go to games. 500 or 2.38% of the student population.
EGADS. Why would we think putting students in lower bowl be good? Make the lower bowl..General Admission.

I respect your opinion, but I respectfully disagree. It's just human nature. They will show up when the team is good and a NCAA tournament caliber team. There hasn't been much buzz around Clemson basketball for a bit now. That will be happening soon enough. The place will be packed the year after next. We will have a tournament caliber team. A relatively meaningless game vs Gtech is uninspiring. It is worth watching from the comfort of a couch looking at your flat screen, but that's about it unless you are limited on options of things to do that day.

There are thousands of Clemson clubs, organizations, and intramural sports teams. Many of these compete against our regional rivals. Is it really being less of a Clemson student if you decide to go play club baseball instead of watching a mediocre basketball team?
Clemson has one of the most active, fit, outgoing student bodies out there. There's plenty of drinking and partying, but there are so many more things to do these days than there was in past decades.

so, you and a very large % of your fellow students are not interested in HELPING us get better, you just want to have the chance to be there when we do. and of course, you want floor seats when that happens. perhaps if students turned out and cheered for the team, it might influence a recruit or 2 to pick CU.. and who knows.. we might just get better. Not only do the players and coaches bear responsibility for making us better.. so do the students, alums, and season tix holders. season tix holders haven't shown up as well as they should, but student support has been bad to terrible.

Our attendance is that our football team has done so well in recent years that students (not saying me in particular) just aren't becoming emotionally invested in an average basketball team. Attack me for being a terrible fan if you'd like but I'm just letting you know the way it is here on campus

Being a fan doesn't mean just cheering when you've got a really good team. Obviously basketball's not to the level of football right now, but it's not like we've had a bunch of bad years. In fact, we've had a good team the last couple of years, and we've only had two bad teams in between now and our last tournament appearance in the 2010-2011 season.

Some people just don't care for basketball. We're in rural South Carolina. It's not a big deal here. It's all about football.
Students pay good money to go to Clemson. If they don't want to see a basketball game, it's fine. Some would rather be playing club sports or participating in other organizations (of which there are many hundreds now).

We all live in a "how can u serve me best" society where it's all about the consumer. There is no sense of pride in our school sports unless they bring you 'individually' some sort of kick back. Football rated nationally right now gives you that retribution for making the long walk to the field. It's a social scene and you're expected to be there. Basketball doesn't offer u that so u don't care. I understand it, it just sux to be a student now I guess. I treasured bball games just as much as the football games while I was there in the early 2000's. They were fun, we lost a lot but it was fun. But I was a sports fan. Kids now at clemson don't have that same mindset. Not the same type of student. Little john used to be a madhouse. Maybe one day we will get it back but with your attitude...not likely.

Mar 4, 2015, 4:36 PM

It wasn't fun at all. There were nights where the women's team had equal or more attendance than the men's. We lost. constantly. When I had to make the trip to North Carolina for the ACC tournament as part of the pep band, we knew we'd only be there one night. The fans of other teams always harassed our crowd for tickets, since they knew we'd be eliminated out of the gates.
Whine about attendance all you want, but I guarantee it's better now, as are the results. The early 2000's were absolutely dreadful.

What are you talking about?
Also, while I agree that having a good team improves the crowds, we've actually had an above average team for the last two years. We've only had a couple of bad years in a while, and yet it's like a lot of students don't even seem aware that we have games. Part of that is the fault of the athletic department and the school not marketing basketball well enough, but part of it is just students not paying attention. Believe, when you're out of school and you either have to pay for tickets or you're too far away to go to games, you'll be wishing you took advantage of the opportunity to walk across campus for a free ACC basketball game.

This kid doesn't realize that we have been students before. I was there in the shyatt/purnell years and rarely missed games. Even without a KJ it was still an electrifying experience. Not going to games this year because we've lost a few previous games doesn't even make sense Bc we can always win the next one. They're just spoiled and don't like the game of basketball.

Exactly!! I have only been out since 2010 and while I was there we were pretty good but we always went to the games...it almost to me and my friends felt like it was our duty...because we loved clemson so much we were going to be at every major event we could ...that place was packed and their is absolutely no freakin reason for the student section to look like it does now...it's embarrassing. I lived there a year or two after graduation and tried to make it to every one I could. I get that some Ppl that go to clemson aren't sports fans but most are people that love clemson ...be a student and enjoy the d@mn games while you are there ..like said above you will regret it.

It my day it didn't matter, but the type students we are getting these days, it might very well be a factor.

part of your college education is time management. If you cant fit a 3 hr block for a game into your study schedule then you fail.

What exactly are you hoping to achieve?

I went to plenty of games myself (some of that during the period that you attended), but I always see you on here pissing on current students. Do you think you are helping things? You're just obnoxious and unpleasant. They're not going to read your vitriol and suddenly start going to a ton of games.
Not everyone is going to love Clemson basketball like you and I. It doesn't make us superior in any way. It just means we were willing to spend more time supporting a bad program because that was our choice.

Agree with JB student support was bad today. Sad that students won't show up to support a competitive team - especially on senior day.

Hmm. I've only been to a handful this year.
High point. UNC. Syracuse. FSU. BC. ND. So I've been to 6 as a student lol. I'll go to NC St on Tuesday and finish at 7. I should be studying though

In addition to the games I didn't attend, I watched them ALL on TV/Online.

Is the free Taco Bell for 80 points still a thing?

A lot of students loved that promotion....but we never hit 80 points any more.

If the team were getting ready to go to the tournament the place would be slammed.

I was a student (02-06) we sucked royally. We suck a little now, but the level of suck was not even comparable. My friends and I all still went to the games. It was awesome, it's just a much more intimate setting. You could actually yell really loud at Reddick and you knew he could and did hear you. We just wanted to have fun, get away from studying, and support our team. But do whatever you want, man. You won't have the luxury of being a student at clemson for very long.

You would have a point making a Miami comparison with their off-campus football stadium. This year sorry the students don't get the out. In my opinion the fact the student can't fill the lower arena student seats is inexcusable. Simply put, "if they win" is should be irrelevant for students.
To see students make comments that include "we're not going to have good basketball support" and also see all the complaining about seating location is more than a little aggregating.
