Anyone in here ever bother with Six Sigma certification?

Dec 16, 2015, 7:54 PM

I'm currently studying to take the exam for six sigma certification mostly for my own knowledge and future job prospects. Anyone ever done it? Any suggestions for studying/passing?

Below is my lunge offering.

This guy gets it.

I have a green belt from nearly a decade ago.

Much like my SCUBA certification from when I was 10 years old, I'm still technically certified, but you certainly wouldn't want to ask me about advice on either. My boss did just mention the other day that maybe his team should get Six Sigma certified, so I'd do the coursework again if so (I guess). Is Six Sigma making a comeback or something? I ain't heard nothin' about it for years, and now twice this week.

It's still big in large corporations

I wouldn't say it's making a resurgence. I think it's just kind of plodding along like it has been for the past 10 years or so.

I did a six sigma project role 12-13 years ago which

was a good experience. There are some skills and tools that I still use from time to time today.

QFD for prioritization, DMAIC charter for scoping projects and ideas, stakeholder analysis, which is actually part of the "change acceleration process", but was covered in our training. I'll still do some statistical analysis from time to time if I'm working with someone who might get it and see value in it.

My.02 would be that if you have some challenging process improvement projects in front of you, it is great. I hear more about lean and pmp certification these days though for normal project management. For six sigma to really be effective, you have to have defined processes in place today with good ability to measure them and demonstrate improvement. Otherwise, lean or pmp may have a better roi on your time.

Just be careful which organization you get certified through. Some are widely respected and some are worse than ITT tech. ASQ is the most well known.

I see a lot about APICS (supply chain) certifications being desired for managerial jobs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was going with IASSC.

Dec 17, 2015, 4:27 PM

ASQ makes you do a couple documented projects. I mostly just want the piece of paper to say I understand it and could use it if I wanted to. If I wanted to pursue a career in Six Sigma, I would have gone with ASQ. They seem to be well regarded in that sense. IASSC seems to be #2.

I've not done it, nor do I have any desire to.

The Six Sigma teams that we have here seem to spend an inordinate amount of time doing projects to justify their existence that tend to make it harder for the rest of us to do our jobs. It seems the company is using these 'projects' as a way to figure out how to cut expenses. In several cases, all they've really done is take away tools that we need to actually make money. In my estimation, it's another 'feel-good look at us striving to be a corporate entity' program that costs more in man-hours than it saves.

I can see how that would happen.

Dec 17, 2015, 4:32 PM

I think proper leadership of a Six Sigma program is important. I don't see much benefit in a rogue Six Sigma team.

Re: green belt here......

Dec 17, 2015, 12:34 PM

we pretty much had a test with answers to study, so it was easy.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you still have that test?

Dec 17, 2015, 4:34 PM

I know there's some practice tests out there. I'm just trying to get my hands on all the material I can. Did you study anything else?

My company is good at it

Dec 17, 2015, 4:36 PM

I've seen 500 man hours and excessive expenses wasted on jobs that would regularly require a case of beer and 5 man hours. But, the 6s group got their bonuses! That's all that counts, right?

I've also seen some good results across our industry. It all depends how a company utilizes it.
