Black America History needs education based on slavery versus immigration.... Not all

Jun 10, 2020, 1:51 AM

Blacks have slave history. These are random numbers stated by numerous sites. There is a PBS show that tested many famous blacks, and people like Spike Lee have zero slavery family tree. His family came to Baltimore in 1800s on their own as normal citizens.

Checking history only 11-13% blacks in USA are desendents of slavery initially brought to US. So changing historically named facilities based on broad swath may not be accurate.

Brazil, Spain, Portugual, Argentina, and other areas as a group not country used more African slaves than American landowner's. That said we have hundreds of thousands global blacks moving to US annually, i am friends with a bunch of Ghana citizens that are close friends in the software world.

My friends are leaving the Gold Coast for American dream, they are anti-protest, they think America is the best thing in the world, they get medicine when needed, they drive to work freely, and can I add they are highly educated. They are all much more book smart in their field than I am. My African friends are really negative towards Americans that don't take advantage of our life. They are ashamed of people that talk negative about what America offers.

They come from a much worse area but yet we are good friends, we fish and we try ethnic foods from around the world. They love America and yet seems like some just try to tear it apart?? Im sure many wont follow but this crazy country crap is uncalled for! History can't be changed, names can't be changed, but the future can be changed.

Too many living in past thinks that will change future?? Nope!! Future actions change the future by learning from past! All the request for names/statue change does nothing. Change our future names is what mat makes sense!!

I guess my point is .....

Just because you have dark skin don't mean history and slavery applies to injustice. So changing names on buildings from past dont fix future. But looking at Social injustice I whats fixes the future! Maybe we need these names publicized to remind us of the Social Injustice from the past? Maybe its wrong to remove them, we lose reminders!

Just a thought

I had a really great chief engineer on a tug I captained several years back , who was from Ghana in West Africa .
He was highly intellectual and keenly aware of the great opportunity he had as a naturalized American citizen .
He was also aware that he likely had ancestral family that were taken in the slave trade to the Caribbean and America , and it was somewhat sobering when we talked about it .
The same way that removing a name from a building or tearing down a statue does nothing to erase that history .. it also does no harm , and so it is also true that making the proper reparations to an egregious part of that history does no actual harm as well .

Just my opinion .

You know those from Africa that want to follow their heritage need their slave owners names to know who their great great grandfathers are! Erasing history does nothing to make things better. We need reminders as to why we don't make the same mistakes. We don't need to embellish their lives but we need their history to remind us. Remove history and we forget why we made change!!! History teaches, forget it and it repeats!

I dont think anyone is going to forget about slavery. The name off a building won't be a factor.

Again, kind of my point is changing the past dont fix the future. Changing what already exists change nothing. Need to focus on future. All these name change requests does nothing. History is history. Lets nake the future better, changing names dont change a thing.

Changing names of historical sites doesn't affect a recent black immigrant. This person doesn't even recognize the history, it's the social injustice that my black friends may experience. I think that is the best way I can explain. But there are a group of Americans that want to group all blacks into the same group and many dont want that!

Most black people arent recent immigrants. Moreover, the issue goes past and deeper than slavery obviously when it comes to race issues. That said, I don't care if they change the names or not if black people are fine with it. It's more of an issue for black people to ponder and decide their feelings on the issue. They are just unimportant names on a couple buildings for me.

Americas/Carribean from Africa between 1500 and 1860, a large portion ended up outside of the U.S. It is estimated that African tribes enslaved over 60 million from their own continent for the slave trade, so I am not sure where the other 47 million ended up.

The black population in the U.S. 1790 was 760,000(less than 1% of the country-most of the first generation of white Americans likely never saw a black person.)

In 1850 the black population in the U.S. was 3.6 million(15% of the U.S. population) 1850 was the largest percentage of blacks this country has ever seen, with roughly 3 million being

In 2000 the black population in the U.S. was 34.6 million(12% of the U.S. population). As contrast, there have been 18.7 million black babies aborted since 1973, almost half the number of the current black population.

Were the slaves kidnapped or sold?

Jun 10, 2020, 8:15 AM

And if so, can we get some names on who kidnapped or sold them? And how they got into the position to be sold?

Re: Were the slaves kidnapped or sold?

Jun 10, 2020, 8:22 AM

Usually kidnapped and then sold by tribal leader enemies..sold more than once. They say 12 million slaves entered the Atlantic and that 1.5 million died on the ships between the 16th and 19th centuries.

Well last time I checked it was their own people that sold them into slavery.

Sorry i fail to see why this is relevant

Jun 10, 2020, 8:24 AM

Are the African Americans that are not descendants of slaves treated any differently?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think there is a sub argument that police treatment

Jun 10, 2020, 8:56 AM

is not as racially based as it is economically based. A poor white male is more apt to be killed by a policeman than an affluent white.

Black immigrants have proven over time to do better on the economic scale than blacks that descend from slaves.

Additionaly, the latest demands don't have anything to do with how blacks are treated; it is directed at names on buildings related to slave ownership.

Remember, the racial conversation is always a moving target.

This may be true but many black people believe they are owed something because of slavery. Ofcourse there is too much racism in this country but it is from both sides. I think it is going away slowly tho but some people will never change.
