Wondering...

Oct 22, 2017, 2:32 PM

1. If K.J regrets leaving Clemson early...

2. If he regrets "Gambling" on the contract he signed with the 76ers....

Obviously not. I think you are being sarcastic though.*****

Please tell why you would say that GSC is being sarcastic with a question that I will bet that the majority of Tiger fans are asking them selves the very same question!!! Regardless of being fair-unfair to KJ, he did pass on his final college season that did leave a lot of folks scratching their heads in wonder of why did he do that with a lot of questions with his shooting ability out side of the paint that he could have spent a lot of time working on in his last season before the NBA had formed an opinion of his game. I also ask myself the same question, I wonder if KJ has ever regretted or questioned himself about his decision of leaving college early for the NBA...I mean with KJ being released from, 76ers (2014–2015), Houston Rockets (2015–2017), Brooklyn Nets (2017), and now the Toronto Raptors since entering the NBA in 2014. Just about any question of KJ entering the NBA early could be reasonable!!!

There was nothing wrong with either decision

First of all, one more year at Clemson wasn't likely to improve KJ as a pro prospect. These guys are getting drafted on potential as much as anything else. That's why all of the high picks are 1-and-dones or foreign players. The NBA would much rather have an uber talented 19 year old that averaged 9 points and 6 rebounds than most 3rd or 4th year players. They are drafting them for their ceilings, not what they've done in college. All college really does is provide the players with a stage to show their abilities. Once a player has played enough to get noticed by scouts, there's really nothing else they need to do in college.

Second, KJ betting on himself absolutely paid off. IIRC he basically had two options. The 1-year fully unguaranteed minimum contract (it was around 500k) or a 4-year contract for just a tad over the minimum but with 1 or 2 years of guaranteed money and then a team option for the rest of the contract. The only benefit to the 2nd contact is the extra guaranteed money and it comes with one extreme downside - if the player does break out they are stuck under team control for 4 years making basically the minimum salary. KJ played well in his rookie year and was subsequently traded (he wasn't cut by Philly as you said) to Houston where he signed a 3 year deal worth 10 million dollars. That's about 9 million more than he would've made if he had washed out of the league on his rookie deal with the 2 years of guaranteed money.

I'd say betting on himself was a darn good decision, wouldn't you? Or do you actually think that signing the guaranteed rookie contract would've somehow made him more likely to succeed in the NBA?

He made over $7 million in 3 years. What exactly should he regret? He made way more than he would if he had taken the 2 year contract offered by Philadelphia. No guarantees he would have moved up in the draft after another year in college. The average NBA career is less than 5 year. Think about how small the rosters are and how long the superstars stick around. KJ is pretty much the norm for role players and got paid handsomely for it.

I'm thinking the $10 million plus he's earned helps him sleep well at night.

He should go to Europe and make another 10 million.

Then retire.

I hate it for KJ, but he was always a "tweener" in my eyes.

Oct 22, 2017, 2:33 PM

Not big enough to play underneath, and lacked the ball skills and shot to play on the perimeter. Just hard to make the slashing/driving, put-back thing work in the NBA at his size. I guess it's possible that he could hook up with another team, but right now I'm hoping he salted a few mil away.

Do the math he's actually very productive

Oct 22, 2017, 2:48 PM

But brings an element that doesn't show ... Defense and shot block ability. He can also hit 3s , but his best game is around the rim. Remember the NBA has longer quarters so his production is right up there with some of the best per minutes he's playing. His only true chance has been with the 76ers. Nobody else has given him that. I hated it when he went to Houston. They never played him at all. That's called decreasing your stock. That's why you see Sammy Watkins and Bryant complain about targets they are getting in football games. If they aren't being targeted they aren't getting the chance to show they are productive. Which will slowly decrease your stock as a product. Same for KJ. He needs a team that will value him and use him

Re: Do the math he's actually very productive

His stats per 36 minutes played: 13.5 pts, 5.6 reb, 1.6 ast, 2.6 to, 1.2 stl, 1.6 blk, 41.2% fg, 29% 3pt, 77.6% ft

He's not bad, but definitely not "right up there with some of the best per minutes he's playing"

Appears his best option in on another continent. Too bad it hasn't worked out for him here.

He is a good NBA player. You look at his stats and minutes played he has been very productive. He will get signed by another team. I am just wondering what it is. There is something not allowing him to stick with these teams. I wonder if he is having trouble picking the system up or attitude. I don't know and not saying its any of those things but his stats speak for themselves. If nothing else he is a quality quality bench guy.
