Do not read if easily offended...

Dec 8, 2012, 11:17 PM

Here is a breakdown of our FT % over the last 10 years. You could say we've been a top 50 program and could of been respected a heck of a lot more had we hit some free throws. I don't know what it's going to take, but these numbers don't lie... the last value is our NCAA rank. Is there such thing is a free throw coach? : )

2012 - .664 228th
2011 - .670 247th
2010 - .701 137th
2009 - .661 267th
2008 - .688 178th
2007 - .623 322nd
2006 - .578 335th
2005 - .617 324th
2004 - .601 324th
2003 - .631 305th

I think both Purnell and Brownlee have tried everything

under the sun to improve free throw shooting. I think it comes down to the types of players that both coaches recruit(ed) for their systems, combined with the fact that it has traditionally been next to impossible to get the kind of players who happen to be excellent shooters who can compete at this level to come to Clemson (i.e. 4 and 5-star blue chippers who are scoring machines).

Purnell focused heavily on the long, rangy, athletic guys who could run and press for 40 minutes. usually, these guys aren't good free throw shooters.

Brownell seems to focus on good ball handlers and defensive players who also don't typically happen to be great free throw shooters.

I agree with you and completely understand, but the fact that we can still run with the big dogs from time to time and have an average ranking of being on the bottom 25% in the entire NCAA? Maybe it's something in the rims.

You do not have to be a blue chip 5 star to hit free throws.

Having said that, we have to recruit elite athletes to stay competitive in the ACC, unfortunately we have never consistently lured elite athletes that are also good shooters from the upper echelon schools in the league.

I'm not offended,so please show me some kindness when I tell you my 90 year old grandmother who is near blind could shoot better free throws than Clemson can.
Ok,I'm exaggerating a bit.Rather it's my 96 year old senile grandfather who can shoot better than Clemson.Either way, neither can accept the job as free throw shooting coach because it would affect their social security benefits.

we have never

Been nails at the free throw line......with that said....this team reminds me a lot of the teams Barnes had here early on.......great defense but ok.shooters ....brownell will get us to the next level jusy a fact of will he stay long enough

BINGO, brother!

Dec 8, 2012, 11:49 PM

This has long been a major problem for Clemson basketball players. It is inconceivable that we are so poor at the line year after year. Look at championship caliber teams and you'll almost always find they shoot 75-80% from the line. Facts are facts!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we have had some better free throw shooters

Dec 8, 2012, 11:54 PM

In recent years but over all it sucks.......you can't coach freethrows that shit.comes natural.

It starts in highschool. The players

are all after "glory" play - dribbling, three pointers (which usually miss). Free throw excellence is reserved for the elite teams - They get them.
