Bill Wilhelm

Mar 1, 2022, 11:30 AM

Head baseball coach from 1958-1993 he was in charge for 36 seasons. He had a record of 1161-536-10 with a win % of .684.
17 regular season ACC Championships
7 ACC Tournament Championships
17 NCAA Appearances
6 College World Series Appearances
He is considered to have been very successful as the head coach.
But what these numbers mean is that he did not win the ACC Regular Season 19 seasons, didn’t win the ACC tournament 29 seasons, and didn’t go to the NCAA Tournament 30 seasons.

So at least 10 years where they won the regular season they probably weren’t too anxious to win the conference tournament since it didn’t affect who got into the NCAA Tournament. Up until ‘98 only 48 teams made the field and til ‘87 only 36 and going back through the ‘70s and ‘60s it could be as few as 16 teams. Don’t let facts cloud those statistics though. Let’s just stick with his teams won the regular season nearly 50% of the time and they played for a national championship 1 year out of every 6.

They didn't have regionals back then. Had it been 64 teams and 8 national seeds, things would have been different.

As Calhoun2 states, the facts matter. Peruse the 17 regions as you state when he did make it and see how many times he was in the Champions game to go to Omaha. He would have just about won every regional every year and made a super regional in today's format.

Can you imagine the outcry if a D1 blueblood team went 42-21 in the regular season today and get left out of the tournament? Well, that is what happened to Clemson in 1986.

How should we factor in the scholarship limits that Leggett and Lee have had to compete against others to build a roster of talented players. Could Wilhelm succeed at a greater level if he was coaching today under these constraints? Just an honest question, because maybe he had different but equivalent challenges during his tenure.

That’s a different question and a very good one!

During the 1970s (possibly before, I was not old enough at the time to remember) the ACC Baseball Tournament was played mid-season. Like end of March or early April.

The very first ACC baseball tournament was 1973

When Clemson won it in 1976, it started on April 25th.

... an icon in Clemson sports.

This post appears to be an attempt at denigration.

Maybe I’m reading it wrong.

He was a very good coach. My brother played for him. In one instance he shared with me, the freshmen class scrimmaged the varsity. Back then, the freshmen did not play with the upperclassmen. The freshmen team had a runner on first and the batter hit the ball to the shortstop who flipped it to the second baseman foe a possible double play. The second baseman turned to throw the ball to first base. Unfortunately, the runner did not duck and the thrown ball struck him right in the mouth. My brother said blood and teeth flew everywhere. Wilhelm ran onto the field and shook the second baseman's hand and said if he doesn't get out of the way, knock his teeth out. He then went over to check on the injured player. Tough but true story.
