Jackie and Shadow spend time together on nest. One of Jackie's eyes has been partially closed for about a week. Some type of injury but it is healing well and late in this update, it was looking much better.

Fiona the flying squirrel visits the nest at night to search for left over bits of food. You can hear coyotes in the distance. I hear them early in the night every night. I think they must be numerous as they are dang near everywhere now. Not too many natural predators in most regions to kill them. So, unless man helps to thin the pack, they keep multiplying and spreading. They have certainly hurt the deer and wild turkey population in SOUTH CAROLINA.

I THINK JACKIE MAY START LAYING EGGS BY JAN.22. GIVE OR TAKE A FEW DAYS. THEY ARE SPENDING MORE TIME AT THE NEST, WHICH IS A GOOD SIGN OF EGG LAYING BEING CLOSE. I STILL THINK THE NEST BOWL NEEDS MORE FLUFF, SO IF WE SEE THEM REALLY BRINGING IN FLUFF FOR BOWL, WE WILL KNOW EGG LAYING IS VERY NEAR.

Went rabbit hunting on Saturday and we found two turkey kills and one small deer carcass, all from coyotes. We usually do well with rabbits on this 900 acre farm we hunted but only had four chases all day, normally have 15 plus. Coyotes are hurting the rabbit population too. We will be going back for a couple coyote hunts.

Coyotes are a huge problem. I hope you eliminate as many as possible. SC has a 365/24/7 open season on coyotes. Hunters need to step up and start hunting them at night.

Thanks for the update! I like to steam this when my students come to the library. They always stop by and watch. They’ve gotten quite attached to Jackie and Shadow. Excited on the possibility of eggs!!
