Snowed in on the mountaintop (long)

and have to much time on my hands. Easy to sit back and remember the good old days at Clemson back in the 60's and that is what I have been doing this morning.
Back in 'my day' there was a 'bar, nightclub, roadhouse' out in the country away from campus that was totally off limits to Clemson boys. I can't remember the name of the joint but it was talked about frequently. None of the cadets had the b#!!s to go to this place for an adult beverage. It was for the local talent only and everyone knew that. One night I was sitting in my dorm room and a friend of mine who I had gone to high school with and was an offensive lineman on the football team came by and told me to get my coat on because we were going to 'big johns'. I said "no way I am going out there". He said he and three other OL's were going and I would be ok if I kept my mouth shut. I figured I would be safe with this group .... so we went. The place was all it was advertised to be and them some. I felt really out of place with this group who were the regulars here. So I sat at the bar and had a draft and kept quiet. A 'person' sat down beside me and when I looked I wasn't sure who or what it was. I think it was girl but 'she' sure was trying to be a cowboy I guess, Perhaps I smiled or chuckled but very shortly my football playing friends escorted me out the door and we were followed by a group of the 'town boys'. We got back to campus safely and when I told my buddies the next day where I had been, I became an instant hero. lol. A short time later, I read in the newspaper where one of the all American linemen on the team, and an NFL guy, got his skull conked with a cue stick in this place. So perhaps I wasn't with the right crowd after all. I always wondered what Clemson football would have been like if we had a few of these local lads on the team. Ha! I guess Harkins is the only one who may remember the name of this joint. Those were the days!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm betting Hartins never went close to that place - nor did I.BTW - was it Harry O or Mass who ventured there? I have no clue what it was called.

IT was Wayne Mass who met the business end of the cue stick. One tough dude as I recall.

in Clemson. I know the guy that stabbed him. I have no idea why he did it but he was only 18 at the time. FYI - He turned it around and has been a good man since he grew up.

I'm sure you are probably right then. I just knew about the other incident and thought maybe you had confused the two. Sounds like Wayne liked to have fun. LOL

If it was "Littlejohn's", my date and I were invited by a black friend of ours to attend a "Piano Red" show there. Because our friend was with us, we had a great time and everybody was friendly towards us. My,that was years ago. Red's rendition of "You got the right string baby but the wrong Yoyo" was cool

Betty's could could get a little rough after midnight. Then there was a black club out towards Central where you also had to mind your ps and qs. I want to say it was called Alfie's or something liked that.

with a bit of a "sagging" problem, who liked to rub guys' glasses on certain body parts. I think they called her the "Grand Canyon." That might classify as a tale guaranteed to produce a violent wretch!

I had a good buddy at Clemson in the early 60s who was very, very straight and he experienced the glass cleaning trick at the fair. I have never seen a guy so embarrassed as he was when she gave him back his specs. Those were the days.

also, known as Scatterbrains which is the oldest beer joint in SC. I think Bob has passed on but believe his wife may still run it. This is no place for college kids unless you are looking for a good #### whupping.

still drop by when I take the back way through Rosman to Clemson from time to time. Never had a problem there even when I looked very much like the federal prosecutor that I was at the time. MOST beer joints with any character are places where you can get your #### kicked if you insist on showing it ....
