2 types of Clemson Fans

Dec 9, 2014, 8:31 PM

Clemson University fans - they love all things Clemson and wish success for each and every Clemson program (including academics, athletics, and administration). These folks are supportive of students and alumnae and contribute to the wellbeing and substance of the institution. These folks also recognize deficiencies and do not always agree with all decisions made, however they do pledge support and understand that the University (all of its parts) will make the best decisions it can with the instruments they have to work with to benefit the University and all of its programs.

Clemson Tigers (winning) Football fans - they cheer loud for the Clemson Tigers Football team when they are winning. They have no interest in the wellbeing of its student body, but are only concerned with the student athletes who play first or second string on the football team, as long as they are an asset to the winning football program. They could care less if football decisions are made that do or do not serve the athlete's best interest, only if it serves the interest of winning.

To be clear ... Clemson University fans support the football team even when losing, and can supportively disagree with decisions made, but have faith that things will change if needed.

This is how I see it. I'm not saying one is more of a fan than the other. But I do personally classify myself in the first group and I didn't receive my degree from Clemson. My husband did ... and I support this great institution because I intend to send my 3 children there. I will not bash a player because of his lack of ability on the field. I can be disappointed without insulting and belittling a student athlete to make myself feel better.

would be interesting to know % of IPTAY

Donors who also contribute to the Clemson Fund (academic fund). Might reflect your delineation.

While I agree with you and am an academic fund donor, I don't necessarily mean monetary contributions. I believe that vocal support and thoughtful voicing of opinions contributes enormously. Deviant voices do not help, regardless of $$$. In other words, tearing down an athlete because he hasn't played the game to your expectations is crap. Supporting an athlete who you understand isn't performing well, but is doing the best he can, is true allegiance.

Agree & have difficulty with people attacking

Dec 9, 2014, 9:11 PM

a Clemson STUDENT-ATHLETE who puts in a lot of work on his/her sport and academics for the price of a scholarship and room&board (and who, by and large, represent our university very well).....especially people who CLAIM to be Clemson fans. I've seen up close and personal the effect it has on a player's parents and other family members.

And anytime you protest their defamatory comments, the ultimate response i:
"Its just an internet chat board, a player or recruit is crazy to let message board stuff affect them"

Of course, these folks get EXTREMELY UPSET if you start attacking THEM on the same message board for slamming a Clemson student-athlete behind a cowardly veil of anonymity. You can bet 99.99% of 'em wouldn't dare spew the kind of sewage they post online to an athlete or their family's faces...cuz if they did, their only salvation would be the police saving their sorry azzes from the beating most of them would so deservedly be receiving.

No kidding...

I have sat with some Alumni and IPTAY members that have gone a bit over the edge when the Tigers have played bad...

I wish the boundaries were that clear in reality

Unmentioned characteristic

Dec 10, 2014, 8:17 AM

I think that I am in the 1st group.

I carry/display a characteristic that was not mentioned ... and that is that I love (greatly appreciate anyway) the teams who compete against Clemson. Before each football game I attempt to greet visitors, invite them over to our tailgate and assist with selfies and whatever else may make them feel pleasant. In Death Valley I assure all the visitors near me that I hope they enjoy their time at Clemson and I offer to protect them should the need arise - which I know will NOT occur. During the warmups and game I NEVER use a BOO. NEVER NEVER NEVER! After the game I continue to be gracious ... even when our Tigers lose and even when it is difficult ... for I know that the game is just a game.

Stupidest stupid #### that stupidly ever was

Dec 10, 2014, 8:24 AM

I went to Clemson. But my father and grandfather didn't; he didn't go to college and was a self made man.

However, my grandfather was a 60 year member of IPTAY and if it were not for his scholarship donations, season tickets and parking spot that I grew up using EVERY ####### SATURDAY I would not have fallen in love with Clemson.

So for you to say stupid #### like that means one thing. My grandfather was a truer Clemson Man than you.

Peace out ######.

smh ... ##### ...

Dec 10, 2014, 9:05 AM

You seem angry. Did you happen to catch the part of my post where I said I didn't go to Clemson? I fell in love with Clemson nearly 20 years ago when my husband took me to a football game.

I'm not sure what you're talking about but it was very eloquently stated with many pound signs. Nice job!

I don't see how what she said was so offensive.

It is extremely naive to see things in black and white like this, the world exists in shades of grey.

How would these 2 types of fans respond in a situation similar to the one recently made by the University of Alabama at Birmingham get rid of its football program:

The University Fans might disagree with the decision to end the football program, "however they do pledge support and understand that the University (all of its parts) will make the best decisions it can with the instruments they have to work with to benefit the University and all of its programs."

The (winning) Football fans would be noticeably upset assuming the team was winning, but would have no reaction if the team was losing because they "are only concerned with the student athletes who play first or second string on the football team, as long as they are an asset to the winning football program" and if the team is not winning, why would they care that the program was canceled?

I imagine the actual reactions of Clemson fans across the broad spectrum would be quite different than the picture I just painted, so clearly the majority of Clemson fans do not fall entirely into either of the categories you proposed, but rather exist somewhere between or even outside of those 2.

Re: 2 types of Clemson Fans

I guess this thread is really all about Cole so I'll throw in my 2 cents. For me, I've been a Cole supporter for at least 3 years, and yes it saddens me to see him having the issues that he has had. I still think he's okay, not as okay as I had hoped, but okay. I think the coaches have failed to play to his strengths along with his own shortcomings. Yeah - it's been a rough year as I don't usually miss this far - but Cole seems different than in previous years somehow. Not sure if he's playing hurt, or his confidence is gone, or what - but I hate watching it and feel sorry for the guy.

I still pull hard for Cole and am thankful he got us the victories that he had to get for us (especially UL - I hate Petrino). Our season would have been in the crapper if not for him. So - best of luck to Cole in the bowl game, and if the coaches call plays to his strengths, then I think we win it.

So good luck Cole. Play hard and have fun and make us proud one last time. :)
