thus why they can wear down more readily in the 4th qtr.

Believe one reason was that an O player Knows where he's going while D player has to go more feet/yards to counter.

What knows you?

O linemen run a max of 5-10 yards on any given play.

With the exception of runs up the middle, a D lineman has to chase the ball every play.

Advantage O line in staying fresh.

The story is very similar at the other levels also, but the most common area where fatigue kills teams is on the D line.

Once the d line is gassed then it's much harder to stop the run and get pressure on the QB. Major advantage to the offense!

Don't know what the overall percentage is but it varies a lot by position.

Yes, each O player knows how involved he is in the play and can conserve energy here and there. D players must focus, react and play harder just in case.

On a similar topic: Time of possession is the most useless stat in football. What's important is the number of plays run.

I wouldn't say ToP is useless. It's both a mental factor between evenly matched teams and could be a physical factor for the opposing offense. Sitting on the sideline for 20+ minutes real time isn't good, and there's a tendency to want to respond immediately when you come back out which can lead to mistakes. Now if you're just significantly better than the opponent, then yes it's pretty meaningless.

Just from personal experience, it's a lot harder playing defense (especially in basketball) for the reasons mentioned. The other guys know what they are about to do, where they are going, etc. The defense is always playing catch up. But, not the Tigers. If you watched last weeks game against the 'Cuse, it looked like the Tiger D was two steps ahead of the Orange. To which I say.... Go Tigers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

You know the opposing QB would run a lot for their life.... but it is never very far.
