Being short on the 85 scholarshjps

Dec 15, 2021, 8:36 AM

how short we don't know until we see what February and the portal brings.

But what I think this ultimately means is fewer redshirts. The two OL likely do. The kicker with Potter back. But the rest likely play.

So actual numbers of active players really won't be a lot different than if we'd signed a large class where many would redshirt. We'll make up the numbers the next two years. But we were extremely young anyway with tons of freshmen/sophomores.

It's going to be fine

Thanks and agree Striper. Still I hope to see Dabo hold these scholarships for spring signees and transfers and not dilute them on feel-good walk-ons. It’s a balance, and best is the standard.

have to mix in portal players as well......

Dec 15, 2021, 8:47 AM

constantly backfilling transfers out w/ incoming freshman will result in always "being young"

just as backfilling transfers out w/ "feel good walk-ons" will result in talent depletion of the roster.

It depends

Dec 15, 2021, 9:01 AM

we'll always have some walk ons get scholarships, that's just Dabo's way.

If freshmen are ready to play, so what? 2018 we were one of the youngest teams in the country. Nothing wrong with young so long as the talent is there. The extremely talented are only staying 3 years anyway

There will still be guys sign who know they are developmental and willing to do that. Every roster is going to need that type guy going forward. Guys ready to go and play by their 3rd year. Look at the success weve had with that type guy.

And yes, the portal will be used judiciously to fill needs.

Very logical observations in both posts, Striper. And I agree - the Tigers will be just fine. Dabo knows there are a lot of people doubting his decisions, both within the Clemson fan base and outsiders (ESPN). You can hear it in his tone. He will be motivated and challenged by this and will take it personally - and this is when he is at his best. This is going to be fun to watch.

Alabama has signed and enrolled 150 players over the last 6

recruiting classes. We have signed 113 over that same period. 37 players is 2 to 2.5 classes for us. In the 6 years prior that we signed 130. That's another recruiting class more than we signed the following 6 years.

We will finish today about 15 scholarships short of 85. It will have an adverse effect at some point down the road.

In 2-3 years Dabo will say “we got who we got”

And the pumpers will cheer

All the way to the playoffs!

So it's been going on a while

and we've still played toe-to-toe with them 3 of 4 times.

Not all 85 play. Bama has their way, we have ours. They have a higher attrition rate as well I believe.

Actually, the numbers show we signed another recruiting

class of players in the 6 years before our run of success. We've not fallen this short on numbers before.

Bringing in more high school players allows the cream to rise to the top while those who aren't productive move on. This process is growing with the transfer portal. We are getting the non productive players to move on, but we aren't replacing them at a high enough rate.

Unless we think that somehow Clemson is short on

available scholarship monies, it would make all the sense in the world to fill those gaps with portal players who have only one year of eligibility remaining. Anything we got out of them would be a bonus, and the size of next years recruiting class would not be affected at all.

The biggest issue I see with portal players

Dec 15, 2021, 9:26 AM

is they want to play, now. We have a few spots that would work, but not many. People point to depth, but all of those 24 guys who couldnt play against USuC except Bockhorst and Ladson are back.

So opportunity for real PT is a hard selling point

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would never want our coaches, or ANY coaches, to use a

Dec 15, 2021, 9:44 AM

PROMISE of playing time as a tool to snag a recruit. I want it to be just like Dabo says, playing time is earned as a result of practicing well.

I don't really keep THAT close an eye on other programs, but it seems to me that Dabo lives by that credo moreso than other coaches. We do a whole lot of rotating players in and out at just about every position that has any kind of competitive depth. Our guys know that if they do the things the coaches ask them to do, at least SOME playing time will come their way.

Now, I have to temper that by saying, the one position where this did NOT seem to be the case last year was quarterback. Either from an injury, or lack of trust from the coaches standpoint, Taisun did not seem to get what would have been a fair amount of playing time. That is why, of all the players who transferred or are about to tranfer, I really can't fault him for that decision.

I'm admittedly not someone who follows recruiting and scholarships numbers very closely. I'm a bit confused with the logic and appreciate any explanation. It would seem logical to me that if we are below the limits that redshirting more players would close the gap?

It also gives us flexibility. Flexibility to use the portal if needed. I don’t think this staff will lower their expectations on the quality of person we bring into the program just because we have an extra scholarship or two. That is not how Dabo has built this program and I don’t think he make compromises now…just the opposite. We just need to stay away from another season of injury after injury and we will be OK.

Having another injury-prone year like this one and it will come back to bite though.
