"hitch hike"

"@" TigerLinks
I have been going to events there since the 50's when my mother would drop us off (12 years old) near White Horse Road and 123 in Greenville with a dollar in our pockets to hitch hike to Clemson , eat a burger at Dan's, and go to the football game. It never got old and never will!
TigerLinks floods my brain with memories. Thanks. I don't yet seem to have that link thing working for me.
As a student "hitch hike" was a normal form of transportation. Guys at Clemson wanted to get home to see their girl. Some wanted to see parents, but most wanted to see their girl. Girls were scarce at Clemson.
Often we could catch a ride from another student to White Horse Road. It was a long trip to Chester from there. Getting a ride out from Clemson was easy.
Funny how times have changed. Two or three of us headed in the same direction would put on our rat hat (even upper classmen), maybe make a sign, and folks would help us on our way. No one was scared to pick us up, in fact rides came easy.
Now no one with half a brain would stop for someone on the side of the road, much less 3 guys in funny hats. These days I would be afraid to get into a car of any who did stop. In the day rode my thumb for many miles.

My thumb is what got me back and forth between Clemson and Darlington (class of '52). It was easy to catch a ride while wearing a Clemson military uniform. Of course, we could only leave Clemson for official holidays.

On arrival in the day all us kids had our heads shaved and were given an M-1 rifle.

In the '60's my sailor suit would get me rides between Norfolk and Greenville.

My granddad graduated from Clemson in the early '30's and he told me that before leaving home to go that there was an old Model T Ford in their barn that had not been driven for many years. He said he worked on the car over the summer to get it running and he drove it the 130 miles to school while he was in college. He said at that time that only he and two other guys had a car at school. He gave rides to whoever would fit and most everyone else hitchhiked home.

Today most everyone locks their doors and kids rarely play outside at all. Most are glued to a screen.
