Been watching a lot of games from last year: Georgia Tech

Aug 27, 2022, 10:18 AM

This game was just weird because of the lighting delays but overall thoughts.

This was before all the crazy injuries and my take on why we were horrible on offense.

We had beaten this team by 50+ points two years in a row and could barely get 200 yards on them last year. Here are the reasons:

1. The OL was horrible off the ball.

Marcus Tate was not a good player and looked lost out there (playing too soon?). Dabo had to call a time-out to get two guards from running into each other one play. Better on passing plays but no push during running plays.

2. Play-calling

Seemed like GT knew what we were going to do, blowing up WR screens, and the running play kept getting stuffed until the end of the game, and Tony couldn't adjust to good zone plays by the GT defense. We didn't throw to the TE until the 4th quarter (and it worked). Well, we tried once to Galloway (1st qtr), who messed up and out of the game afterward.

3. WRs

Ross had a couple of good plays, but Ngata and DJ were not on the same page. DJ tries to lead Nagata into a soft spot in the zone one play, and Ngata isn't even looking back. I wonder if much of this passing game failure isn't on the WRs running poor routes.

4. DJ

Fumbled once, and the passing was off at the beginning of the game. However, he turned it on towards the end of the game. After watching many games from last year, I am convinced that DJ was way over-blamed for our offense last year. He gets going and is fine, he had to throw it away a lot because of reasons 1-3 and seemed to make good decisions with the passing game.

I’ve rewatched quite a few 21’ games

And tend to agree. DJ has issues with accuracy and touch sometimes, but when given a clean pocket he mostly delivered.

That being said, there are a lot of QB’s that can deliver when they have time and wide open receivers. I think the question is whether DJ can succeed when things arent quite so ideal. We may not know the answer to that until games 3 or 4.

By all accounts, DJ has been a great teammate and worked hard to improve. I am rooting for him and hope his hard work pays off.

I bet ALL of our opponents see that DJ can not complete passes when he is pressured . What does that tell you about GTs plan for the game??? The OL needs to be a LOT better.

Hopefully DJ has grown in that aspect of his game. If so, could lead to some big plays early on if they test it.

As well as he played against Notre Dame, they discovered that in their overtime victory, although with the pressure they put on no one could have probably done much better. Still didn't look good.

I suspect our offense will be extremely conservative until the coaches see who DJ is. Or is not. All of this “he’s been great” hype from Dabo is just for DJ to read and get his confidence boosted. Can’t remember Dabo doing same for TL and DW preseason.

Thats true.

He can improvise too. I mean he'll throw a screen in the dirt on one play, and the next play escapes a crazy rush and throw a dart 50 yards downfield. Craziness.

Appreciate the analysis. I think I’ll go back and rewatch today too. It’s always good to go back after giving it some time.

I watched some highlights from the UGA game the other day. I forgot how excited I was about Ross, Ngata, and Williams being on the field at the same time. Especially given the DJ hype.

I am afraid to watch the UGA game, haha.

Yep. There were a lot of times last year that it appeared DJ and the WRs were not on the same page. I am not in a position to say who was at fault but they definitely were not in sync. Hope that is better this year and also hope that we establish the running game so we don’t have to rely on the passing game as much. Spot the dang ball! I’m ready for football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Thats the huge hope.

Aug 27, 2022, 12:08 PM

On the bright side, it was hard to believe that game was Shipley's third. I think he is going to have a break-out year if the new line combination works.

I think moving Putnam to center is really going to help us. If Miller can stay healthy at tackle then we might need to rely so much on the passing game.

Heck DJ can fall toward for 4 yards once he gets his momentum going.

I watched the Cheezit bowl a couple of nights ago. It left me depressed about DJ and our offense. We scored 1 touch down offensively. We had the ball at the end of the first half and didnt do squat. If ithad been TL or DW we would have scored. I cant remember a single downfield pass. Jeff Scott where are you?
This game combined with the spring game has me verrrry concerned about offensive ability. I hope DJ has had an epiphany and performs like the Big Cinco he was supposed to be. And not like what people were calling him at the end of the year - El Stinko.
He has a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I am still hoping for a Natty appearance.
I do not recommend watching that game if you want to be optimistic. Plus it was against Iowa St…..who are they?
Go Tigers.

I watched that again months ago, you're right.

Aug 27, 2022, 12:30 PM

It was very depressing.

Maybe Elliot was a little check-out as well. I am not convinced that Elliot was creating game plans all season. Again, so much blame to go around but WR, QB, coaching, and OL were all horrible.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m sure Tony Elliot was checked out for that game

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

One could argue that DJ was "over blamed"... but I still think

Aug 27, 2022, 1:03 PM

he was a big part of the problem. Too many times he held on to the ball way too long. The WR might have been open briefly, but by the time DJ found him, it was too late... the DB had recovered and the safety was bearing down. That forced him to try to deliver a bullet at the last second, to "squeeze it in there". Now it has to be a perfect pass, not a tad too low or high, or slightly behind the WR... you know what I mean.

And those 100 mph bullets are impressive from an arm-strength perspective, but they are not necessarily easy to catch. I always refer back to Jerry Rice's comments on Joe Montana, that he threw the most "catchable ball" of any QB in the NFL. It was delivered on time, had a little air under it, and was a nice tight spiral... i.e. "touch". It all depends on timing, and the QB making a quick read and getting the ball out on time.

Anyway, what do I know. That's how it looked to me a lot of times last year.

Re: Been watching a lot of games from last year: Georgia Tech

Alright, you motivated me to go back and watch the game. Talk about almost snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory. Clearly the superior team and botched points at every turn.

One thing that jumped out at me was the difference with Pace/Shipley in the game versus LynJ. I really liked Lynn J and probably had some bias watching the game at the time. But he really struggled and stalled at least two drives by taking big losses trying to make something happen.

DJ missed a couple of guys, a couple guys didn’t make plays, Shipley got tripped up on a would be big play, etc. The game felt like death by 1,000 cuts. Just to say, lucky to get out with a W. D was lights out and the offense made numerous little mistakes throughout the game but it was several players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good call about Lyn-J

Aug 27, 2022, 2:21 PM

I was thinking the same thing watching him. He was dancing around and losing yards not taking the 2-3 yards by just shooting through the hole.

Shipley just beat him out simple as that, and he couldn't take it. Oh well, Lyn-J, grass isn't always greener, huh?

I once heard the grass is brown everywhere. I prefer to believe the grass is green wherever you water it.

TU for rewatching that game. The only game I want to rewatch involves the chickens down the road.

But I've seen quite a few this off-season. Just trying to decide if our offense will be improved or not.

That game was maddening. OL played down

Aug 27, 2022, 2:54 PM

to the opponent and Venables played a horribly conservative scheme. They were daring Tony to throw into the middle and he never called did. By half, I think we all knew Tony wasn’t going to be able to get the O out of the funk, the D was going to have to win the game. Glad they did. They were pretty tired out at the end, cause the O only ran like 60 something plays.

If we have a similar game this year, I hope Wes will crank up the pressure from the D and takeover the game.
