When did you know that you would be a Clemson Tiger?

Nov 24, 2022, 6:32 PM

My Daddy grew up in Saluda South Carolina and joined the Air Force. He was stationed in Greenville Mississippi when he met my Mother and I was born there and lived there until my father retired from the Air Force. We moved back to Saluda when I was in the 4th grade and a new friend of mine asked me if I was pulling for Clemson or South Carolina for that weekends football game. Well not being aware of what was going on I went home and asked my father which team did I need to pull for. I will never forget the expression on his face as he told me “Son if you want to continue living under this roof…. The Clemson Tigers! That’s when I knew that I would be a Tiger forever!

I honestly can’t remember. My dad and uncle went to Clemson and that’s all I’ve ever known. But somehow my older brother turned to the dark side. I say somehow, but his wife graduated from there and when they started dating in high school he claims he never was a Clemson fan and that’s who he has always pulled for. Anyway, the rest of us turned out smarter.

My Dad was a 54 grad. I attended in 78-79, got stupid and dropped out. My daughter attended in 17-18 and transferred to a tech school to finish her degree for reasons I won’t discuss. She regrets doing that, btw. I think my first Clemson game was the Clemson/coot game. I think I was around 8 or 9 and sat on the Hill.

Stepdad was a Clemson fan. Part of his family were Tarheels. So pretty much from about 3rd grade on. First real memories are Clemson vs Nebraska in the Orange bowl. I recall like 3 TV’s going that day.

Nov 24, 2022, 7:15 PM

My family originally is from Pennsylvania, though my dad is a graduate from the University of Michigan. We moved to SC when I was 9 years old. My older sister is 4 years older than I and started looking at colleges my 8th grade year.

We went as a family to uSUC for a tour of campus. While driving downtown, whatever the main drag is.. Assembly St?.... we see a lady stumbling around on the side walk and step off right in front of our van. My dad swerved and ended up clipping her with just the mirror. This was 1993, so cellphones were not common. But my parents had a bag phone in the van. While my dad went to check on the lady, my mom, through the open window, stated she was calling 911.

As soon as she heard that, the lady miraculously jumped right up and booked it. Police showed up and stated they had complaints of a lady trying to scam people for money or drugs. All said and done, we didn't even bother to tour campus. We turned right around and my dad very clearly states "none of you ###* kids are every going to be c0cks."

We went and toured Clemson 2 weekends later, and we all fell in love with it. My dad says his blood now runs orange and blue.

Trying to find where the UofSC campus was in Columbia prior to that helped.

My dad is a coot grad, but said I could go wherever I wanted. Easy choice. It’s still a thrill every time I step on campus. It is home.

I’m an immigrant. Came to this beautiful country 22 years ago and moved to South Carolina. I used to listen to the Clemson games on the radio on Sunny 103.5. One day somebody told me about Clemson and Death Valley. I went to the library and went on Clemsontigers dot com. I read the entire website from top to bottom, no joke and was hooked right away reading about the Hill and Howard’s Rock. I would eventually get my graduate degree from Clemson and now as a proud American was there when we finally climbed the mountain in 2017 and have travelled to many other CFP games. Tiger for life!!

My grandfather graduated from Texas A&M (way before Jimbo) and my mother went to TCU and (SW)Texas St. She had brothers that graduated from A&M and Texas Tech. Her first husband was a 1937 Clemson graduate that was a Navy pilot killed in the Pacific in May 1945. My dad graduated From PC. My mother said she didn't like or pull for, "The University of any state!" She always pulled for the A&M and Techs, so I pulled for A&M and Clemson. Living in SC it became more and more Clemson!

Nov 24, 2022, 10:47 PM

Things were really different then. In January of 1960 I hadn't taken the ACT or SAT and was planning to join the Air Force (I was an Air Force brat). When I told my girl friend this she jumped all over my a##. She told me in no uncertain terms to get off my A## and get into college. Being a very shy teenager with a beautiful girlfriend way better that I deserved I got the message.

Being in N. Charleston at the time my dad was steering me to the Citadel. I had not desire to go to a military college so picked Clemson to major in chemistry. The Clemson part was one of the best decisions I ever made. The chemistry major one of the worst. In the end it all worked out and I have done very well, and every year I enjoy the annual chicken kickin.

I grew up in Columbia as a Gamecock fan. Had never been to Clemson. In high school when I can time to research college, I realized that Clemson had what I wanted in a college. My first time in the stadium was at the spring game my junior year. My first real football game was the first game of my freshman year. After that freshman year, I've been a diehard Clemson fan and non- gamecock fan. I saw the light and saw how classless many gamecock fans are.

December 1984 at the career fair at Gaffney (SC) High School.

I was raised a Carolina fan, and hated all things Clemson. At my high school career fair, I met with the Carolina folks and learned my SAT scores would easily get me into their engineering program. A buddy of mine was a Clemson fan and also interested in engineering, so I tagged alone with him while he spoke to the Clemson people.

The Clemson recruiter explained their engineering program admission requirements, which caused me to ask “Why are your requirements so much higher than Carolina’s requirements?” The recruiter smiled and said “I think you just answered your own question.”

Once it all sank in, I told my buddy “Well, it looks like I’m going to Clemson.” I applied , got accepted, and the rest is history. It took my parents some time to adjust, but they came around.

Great stories! My path, as a "northerner" from South Jersey is a little different. Didn't really know about the Tigers til I started looking for somewhere to play baseball and that also had an architecture program. Coach Legget didn't think baseball was in my future at CU (he said I could probably play at a smaller D1 program) but once I got a feel for the campus and people, I knew it was gonna be home for the next 4 years. (class of 99) my kids now have been running around NJ wearing CU gear ever since. We'll see where they wanna go when it's time....
