Becoming a Football Power

Dec 24, 2020, 10:48 PM

So...I've seen a lot of talk that Clemson is not a historic football power, so I think we should start a petition to play home and home series against the true historic football powers from the conference with the most NCAA football championships. If we can beat Yale, Princeton, and Harvard, we should be able to claim we've arrived as a football power.

Instead, we are stuck trying to prove our worth against other recent newcomers, like OSU who didn't win an outright championship until almost 1970 (I don't think titles won during WII should count...for obvious reasons). Maybe we will one day get to prove our worth against the only real bluebloods in the B1G, but we can only dream of beating Michigan since we've never had a chance to play them and we really need to avenge our loss to Minnesota.

If our only claim to fame is that we are 5-0 against OSU, I don't think anyone will believe our claims to be an elite program. We also need to promote our recent success against ND, GT, and Alabama instead of relying on victories against OSU to prove our worth.

I will admit that your version is more concise.

Come on man; Everybody knows why Clemson isn't a historic football power;
It's because we play in a historic basketball conference.
So here is my solution to your scenario.
And it has nothing to do with those Ivy-covered schools you mentioned,
If Notre Dame can (supposedly) join the ACC and they are a northern school why can't Clemson, a Southern school (supposedly) become independent and join the B1G?.
Then we could also play Indiana, Michigan and Michigan State in basketball. After all they have better post season results in basketball than OSU.
Then maybe the pundits will say we are a historic football power.

I will admit I didn't consider that strategy. It's something to consider, but an initial evaluation reveals it hasn't helped Nebraska.

I’ll take Current Football Power over Traditional Football Power every time.

They can all continue to talk about what they used to be, I’ll continue to laugh.
