Spiller gets a pass for not landing a top RB last cycle

Jun 15, 2022, 9:03 PM

I thought he did a great job with the RB group last year as they were easily the best offensive position group. Some people were giving him some heat because we missed out on all our top RB prospects last year. People forget though that it's hard to recruit a top notch RB when your starter is a True Freshman. However now, recruits are going to assume Shipley will be a 3 and done guy so the time frame to potentially being the top guy isn't as long. It'll be interesting to see if he can get a top guy this cycle.

I suppose it's possible, but that's one spot where the pickings look slim.

I agree. What 5-star RB’s? Perhaps the ‘24 class we will land an “instant starter”

For ‘23, I would be thrilled to get one of these 4-star RB’s we are courting, along with a solid 3-star that understands his role is primarily in clean-up time.

Nama and UGA seem to land a 5* every cycle regardless of the starter

I agree.***

Bama and UGA are traditionally run heavy programs

During Dabo's tenure, we don't have that reputation. Not a fair apples to apples comparison. If you were talking about QBs or WRs, you'd have a better argument for comparing those programs to Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Etienne certainly put up some pretty big numbers here.

Jun 15, 2022, 10:56 PM

Gallman and Ellington did too.

I don’t think the perception is that RBs don’t shine at Clemson.

We tend to be very balanced pass versus run

Jun 15, 2022, 11:38 PM

I think most games we are near 50/50 and we spread the ball around with the receivers, our QB runs a lot and we tend to play three backs even in big games.

I think ETN averaged around 12 to 15 carries per game for his career whereas at Georgia or Alabama The starting running back is gonna get at least 25 carries a game.

ETN finished as a top 10 running back in career numbers despite us having a mediocre at best OL and limited carries. Unfortunately the line was especially bad his senior year. Imagine the numbers he could’ve put up with a better OL and 20 Carrie’s a game! He probably would’ve finished in the top three in pretty much every category for career numbers if not number one in Korea yards and average per carry.

Unless something changes especially with the OL it’s gonna be tough for us to get a top five RB.

ETN's carries were also lower than they would be because his first few years he didnt even really need to play in the second half.

UGA and Bama RBs. You give yourself even less credibility when you try to talk football.

Its kinda embarrassing to be honest.

You dont consider ETN on par with any running back from Bama or UGA recently?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not even in the same ballpark as Bama and UGa

Jun 16, 2022, 3:31 PM [ in reply to Etienne certainly put up some pretty big numbers here. ]

NFL numbers. These are the two best programs in America for placing RBs in the NFL, and it's not even close, and that's why they sign the best.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because they have consistently proven to have

quality Olines.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And, because quality O-line + quality RB = NFL draft pick.

Jun 16, 2022, 9:47 AM

Whatever bad you want to say about the Dawgs, they do put a whole bunch of their running backs into the league. And they have success once they get there.

When our O line results have been as poor as it has been over the past 4 years you cannot expect a 5***** back to want to come to Clemson. Our O line performance since Santa Clara has been pitiful.

The puppies confirmed that in Charlotte last September.

Yet we have a 5* and two 4* on the roster…

They don't play like 5* backs. Bama backs and DAWG backs run circles around our current running backs.

Net 3 yards of rushing against the puppies last fall in Charlotte if my memory serves me right.

I like that perspective OP. Spiller put the product on the field. Got a good inheritance but did put an impressive group together even after having to manage a high profile departure. Hopefully, he can build rapport with recruits in the 24 class and continue to prove himself to seal his first big time RB recruit.

You must see more in Ship than he has shown yet. Top RB recruits want to run behind a line that actually blocks and our guys were all hurt last year. Hopefully, this year will be different.

The plan is to take 1 RB.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Re: Spiller gets a pass for not landing a top RB last cycle

Jun 16, 2022, 7:48 AM

The NFL doesn’t really value a 25 carry/game workhorse RB anymore. Notice ETN even with the new coaching staff still wants him to be a hybrid. I think the better Shipley does in the Clemson offense the better the RB recruiting should get with respect to signing the right type (pass catching). The Clemson offense (with a decent Oline) may be perceived as better path to the NFL than a Wisconsin or Georgia bruiser.

CJ's talent on the field is not the topic as he was the most exciting player in Clemson's history IMO. His ability to properly manage the RB position is also not in dispute as he did a great job last year.

The question on the table is can he recruit a top flight RB. So far the answer is no after 1.5 cycles. Hopefully going forward he can get it done.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Giving him a pass is fine

Jun 16, 2022, 9:03 AM

But it had nothing to do with a true freshman. Losing coaches and just an off year in recruiting and the lack of relationships built the previous 2 years due to covid are the reason. OSU is a prime example, they throw it all over the field and rarely commit to the run and still land one of the top 3 guys every year, lack of possible carries is obviously not the reason, players are always sold year to year with what the coaching staff is selling them on how they will be utilized.

For me, the fact that we missed all of our highly rated targets is not as distressing as the fact that we did not have at least a 3* with offers ready as a fall back. We ended up signing a legacy who was basically a walk on candidate.

With the recent success we have had in Texas we need to reach out to some of our connections
out there and get some feedback from some of our commits to maybe 1 or 2 that are getting overlooked.
Texas is loaded with RBs. It always is. Most of the top guys this cycle are already spoken for but we can still find an ETN level 4* back that can be developed. I think Spiller can get it done. I just wish we would strike while the iron is hot.
