Beating the GOR

Mar 2, 2023, 8:15 PM

From a legal standpoint could another Conference funnel you money unrelated to media rights? In other words could you play for free on paper and get a 20 million donation from a sponsor?

I don't think the two "12" conferences has that kind of financial support. And I don't think the SEC or Big Ten want us that bad. Not sure either would take us even if we were free to go anywhere we want.

How did you come up with neither conference wants us? 2 recent national championships, 6 playoff appearances, consistently ranked in the top 10. Some of the best facilities in the country. Rabid fan base and one of the best football day experiences. You are out of your mind if you think another conference doesn't want us.

If the GOR was a real problem the schools would get together and try to break it. If the 14 schools are not worried about it why are you and others on this site worried about it?

To answer your question, no, because the 'donor conference' wouldn't have the money in the first place. The way these work, our media rights money would go to the ACC, so the SEC wouldn't have rights to the money in the first place. So even if we took 'zero dollars', the SEC still wouldn't have anything to pay us with via 'donation'.

You can be given conference money while another conference..

Swofford made has royally screwed the ACC. Has there ever been a worse conference President than Swofford in the history of college sports?

About the only way I can see to beat the GOR is to somehow make the ACC go away. Maybe get 12 of the current 14 ACC schools to simultaneously leave the ACC which would trigger a total collapse of the ACC. A month later have those same 12 schools band together to form a totally new league - maybe call it the East Coast 12 with a completely new administration (i.e. no former ACC folks in the whole organization) with a completely new set of league bylaws.

Seems to me if they could somehow pull this off all of the previous ACC agreements and contracts would be null and void (as it no longer exists) and the East Coast 12 would then be free of their past ACC agreements and could barter their own contracts. Of course the lawsuits that would result from such a move would be a lawyers wet dream...

Actually, the SEC signed a similar deal. They were just able to get Oklahoma and Texas so they could renegotiate their contract.

Swoffie was bad, for a few schools, but great for the weak sisters. I don't blame him for the current mess caused by the 20 plus year contract w/ESPN and the GOR. The one's who voted for it and signed it were the College Presidents who don't know squat about athletics and the value of sports media. I'm sure they are all dissed that the coaches make way more money than they. I also don't remember any of the ACC coaches saying how bad the contract was and should not be signed plenty of blame to go around. The focus by everyone was keeping schools/teams locked into the ACC. LOOKS LIKE THAT WORKED SO WELL, THE ACC DIE A SLOW DEATH.

The way this works is that ESPN has a contract to come into Death Valley and broadcast all the game played there. And dictate the kickoff time.

ESPN keeps all the money sold for advertising.

If Clemson joined The SEC or Big Ten those conferences would not be allowed to have their television partners broadcast games from Death Valley (unless the GOR was dissolved).

Just play all of your games away. GOR is defeated. Unfortunately, over 25% of our athletic revenue comes from home football ticket sales.

The GoR made sense in the environment when it was signed, but it should never have been longer than 10yrs. Unfortunately Swofford traded the additional decade to get ESPN to invest in the ACCN. Alas, the ACCN will never generate the profits needed to keep pace with the other conference deals. That was a terrible deal and I don’t think would even be considered by any conference in today’s environment. Unfortunately Swofford negotiated the deal before it was clear that streaming services would compete for sports content. Seems like the only other option at the time would have been NBC, but they were only tooled up for ND football and otherwise had been out of the college sports game for awhile. It was just terrible timing for when the ACC had there media rights expiring and Swofford played the one leverage the conference had to get ESPN to the table. Remember he was trying to get a linear network created to compete with the SEC and Big10 while looking over and seeing how the PAC12 had failed miserably with their network.

Bottomline, he preserved the ACC since that was his job when in reality long term it would have been better to let it dissolve. But that’s not what the presidents would pay any commish to do.

The "GOR" sounds like a big lizard that Ultra-Man would

tussle with. That is, until the Energy Beacon on his chest begins to blink......

That thing sure did have a short recharge life. But, it always miraculously managed to have just enough "juice" to do the job at hand.

I shirley wish we could find us an Ultra-Man to get us out from under this GOR nightmare. 2036 seems like LIGHT years away from now. The financial gap between the ACC and the BIG / SEC will have totally destroyed our ability to compete in any meaningful fashion long before then, I fear.
