Basketball in 2024

Mar 29, 2022, 8:09 AM

So who would be on your short list of reasonable hires to replace Brad? Please indulge me. I want to once again enjoy watching basketball.

Make reasonable improvement next season … enough for Neff to grant him an extension based on perceived improvement then we get 3-4 more years of mediocrity at best

I agree with your sentiment. My sons and I have over the last decade think finally they will fire him. Then he does barely enough and another extension. I really do not hate Brad. Just hate the disappointment of losing close games and to the teams below us in the conference every year. It is also frustrating when he blames everyone but himself. A true leader takes blame to encourage those around him and to rally in their belief.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

Brad routinely takes responsibility for the outcome.

Stating otherwise tells me you either don’t pay attention or just want to create something to criticize him for.

I think that is exactly what will happen.

He can win somewhere between 18-20 games, make the NIT, and get a contract extension.
Very likely, I would say.

Yay!!!

NIT - NOT IN the TOURNAMENT

Mar 29, 2022, 8:56 AM

The first time making the NIT saves a coaches job, should be the last time because everyone responsible for that decision should be fired immediately. The NIT is a consolation prize. It's akin to football teams playing in the Birmingham, Independence, or Belk Bowls. It's rewarding mediocrity.

Amen! Clemson's Standard is Dabo's "Best!"
If young Mr Neff does Not grow a pair and Fire Brownell, well he is
tying his wagon to Brownell. And if indeed the Administration is behind
keeping Brownell, then I would point them to a former President of Clemson
who did not stay very long after controversial athletic dept decision.
Either your goal is Championships or don't bother, it's a Waste of
Clemson's time & resources. Furthermore, can you put a price on the value of
Dabo's Championships for Clemson University as a Whole? Yes you can and it's
Enormous!

Is is just me or does it seem strange that a fan fears her team will improve next season? Seems to me that under these circumstances the problem might just be the fan?

The first people who need replacing are those who post basketball items on the football board.

Sorry about that. I do hope you can make it through this tragic mistake. For if your whole life is devastated now I would just be distraught. Yes I realized I posted it to the general board which is obviously football. I am not one that posts often because of petty people. I hope you flexed behind that screen tough guy....u deserve it!!

With the same players, I'd expect more of the same.

If it does happen. Again, big IF...

Niko Medved at Colorado State

Bob Richie Furman- think he is finally going to get to the NCAAT next season and win SoCon.

Preston Spradlin - Morehead State

Kelsey - College of Charleston

Earl Grant- BC. Yes if has a break through year he could come back to Clemson even if still in ACC.

There are others but this is short list.

Mar 29, 2022, 9:09 AM

Another couple of years isn't going to change a thing.

The team will continue to tarry in mediocrity and we will be having these exact same discussions every March for the foreseeable future.

Neff isn't going to fire Brad Brownell. Letter was flash

Mar 29, 2022, 9:11 AM

and no substance. Neff is DRAD in a different suit. NIT or a quick loss in the tournament. It doesn't matter.

Coach Brownell basically has a lifetime contract to continue the milquetoast mediocrity that defines him.

"if " u buy into the " spend $$ to get wins" theory

Mar 29, 2022, 9:43 AM

according to this data Clemson is ranked 42 in basketball spending over the last 4 years

https://www.sportico.com/business/commerce/2021/college-sports-finances-database-intercollegiate-1234646029/

So. if you believe Clemson has been the 42nd best school in basketball for the last 4 years then they are right where they should be.

I think it is more about criteria more so than a specific person but here is my take:

Made it to the NCAA tourney at least three times at two different schools.

Not a wiff of NCAA trouble. Good grad rates.

Has show progress & sustainability at each school beyond a single class. Ie not a one-hit wonder.

No "style" gimmicks (ie the OP press).

Ability to recruit beyond typical footprints.

deep, personal ties to Clemson, that can relate to and engage with the students, fans, and boosters, that possesses the energy, vision, and most of all, belief, that there is no limit to what we can achieve here in hoops given the right mix of chops, work, and student-athletes - someone that sees our past failures not as an anchor weighing our prospects and expectations down, but as an opportunity to deliver hoops glory like never before and be legendary.

Go Tigers!

Re: Basketball in 2024

Jay Wright of Villanova will never leave there. But a Jay Wright clone of his coaching style would be perfect for Clemson and the competitiveness of the ACC. His recruiting and development of secondary line players combined with his great game management skills make it tough on virtually any team he plays. Keep in mind that he just lost his most valuable player in starting guard Justin Moore this past weekend who has had surgery to repair a torn ACL. Just look at how Jay comes up with yet another design in playing Kansas (currently the hottest team left of the final four) with two younger and less seasoned guards in his place this weekend!!!! He most certainly will keep Villanova competitive against Kansas!!!!

Despite the handful of Brad Brownell Bros that work feverishly on this board, IRL the worm seems to have turned dramatically against Brownell. I expect his steadily declining attendance to crater next year forcing Neff’s hand. Unfortunately the administration has forced the situation. Even if it predates Neff he’s probably too naive for the job if he thinks good feelings and a few extra dollars are gonna turn the ship around. It’s taken 12 years to really push people over the edge, they won’t be turned around easily.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think we should consider Steve Lutz

Apr 2, 2022, 4:38 PM

He turned a Texas A&M CC team that went 5-23 the year before around his first year. Led them to a 23-12 record plus a NCAAT bid.
