Basketball future outlook thoughts (long)

Feb 16, 2014, 5:00 AM

New game same story. McDaniels is great, and I love to watch him play, but it is hard for a one man offense to win games. Even Michael Jordan had Scottie Pippen. Notre Dame was a must win to get into the tourney, and the UVA loss was a elimination from the big dance without winning the ACC tourney. However a home NIT game, and the extra practices will be a solid season. This team has gone past original expectations. The win over Duke led to our hopes (atleast mine) getting up about making the big dance, but we are two guards away. Or really another consistent double digit scorer, and a point guard with a mid range jump shot. Seems like Rod Hall takes a couple extra dribbles on his drives, and gets a lot of shots blocked. I like the development of Nnoko, and believe Djite will show the same improvement over the off season. Jordan Roper has been dissapointing this year. I was hoping he would have that smooth left handed jump shot like K.C. Rivers and Cliff Hammonds, but he has been to inconsistent. However, I do believe Brownell is building a solid program. He is proving he can develop players. If McDaniels returns I see a definite non play in game tourney bid expectations. Brownell is going to win here the Clemson basketball way. With unherald players who fit a system, and develop over time together into a solid basketball team. With a solid foundation, not what OP did.

PS- I am in the beginning stages of trying to become a high school basketball coach so I try to post my opinions on here when I can for a little feedback. I really like Brownell's defensive style, and believe if blossomgame can shoot 35% from 3 point range it will help improve our offense sustancially by opening things up a little bit more. Brownell is building a winner the right way it just takes time.

I agree with every point you make except one.
The Notre Dame game may have been a must win to get into the Big Dance but I don't think the UVA loss eliminates us unless we win the tournament.Win 5 out of the next 7 plus maybe a win or two( have to win at least one,two would be better)and we might get in.
Still,I think this is a NIT team, and who knows, maybe one that could make some noise.
On a player note,we could have used Patrick Rooks this season, but I have heard we have a 6"4" shooting guard enrolling next season(have you heard this).
Anyway good post ,and good luck with your trying to become a basketball coach.

Rooks, plus the 2 incoming recruits: 6'4 combo guard

Gabe DeVoe and 6'7 SF Donte Grantham all provide what we sorely lack this season. Shooting. I agree I think we're an NIT team this season, which I'll be pleased with. Next season, we'll have 3 new guys(plus hopeful improvement from the returnees) that will begin to correct the offensive deficiencies

intensive off season strength and conditioning.

We are weak (with a few exceptions) when compared to our competition.

We need to recruit on par with the middle of the ACC ...

Feb 16, 2014, 9:46 AM

Coaching can only accomplish so much.

The question is not whether Brownell is a good coach but whether he can recruit well enough to compete is a league with 5 to 6 elite top 25 teams.

I agree with you as well. Couple of thoughts in addition:

KJ is a great player, but as you saw in the beginning of the UVA game crisp ball movement and moving without the basketball are the keys to being effective on offense. Combine that with KJ and we could score more points.

Maybe I am wrong, but we win that game by 5 with Nnoko. He would have had double digit boards, and dropped in at least 5 - 7 points.

Give Josh Smith some credit though, I thought he played his butt off. He has average hands and lacks confidence in his offensive moves. UVA had no shot blocker in my opinion yet Smith and Djitte didnt go up strong. I attribute that to youth and lack of strength.

The most puzzling thing about this season to me is Roper. I had high expectations this year. He is solid offensively, and I didn't think he was that much of a liability. Not sure if he is in the doghouse, but Ajukwa was taking his minutes yesterday. And I fail to see how that had anything to do with Nnoko having the flu.

You mention Blossongame... and I think he can be a decent scorer with some confidence and more toughness. He gets pushed around a lot, although he looks solid. Not that surprising being young though.

I agree with folks about Brownell's recruiting, but I think recruiting at Clemson is extremely difficult. It stems from the lack of elite talent in the state / footprint (I know Atlanta has some, but none that we get).

The other thing that I wonder about Brownell is how does he effect the confidence of his shooters. At times we all sit around and wait for KJ to make a play. If you remember Coach K used to say Duke would JJ watch when they had Reddick. It seems that our guys are timid and just want KJ to take over, that is something that Brownell needs to work on in my opinion.

Good luck in your coaching efforts... I would recommend Dean Smith's book for some valuable insight. Notice I said Dean, not Roy Williams.

When looking at Roper and Blossomgame keep in mind

Feb 16, 2014, 1:35 PM

Blossomgame is coming off a compound fracture of his lower leg and Roper is coming off of a stroke. They are a behind expectations because of uncontrollable physical issues.

I think the NCst game is the most important of the season

Feb 16, 2014, 11:10 AM

lose this one, and the wheels could come off. They have to turn it around now and the rest of the games are winnable.

But Uva was way better at scoring, i.e. finishing drives. We also couldn't seem to secure a rebound if our life depended on it.

The best we will be is another UVA. Good solid team but not

Feb 16, 2014, 12:20 PM

great. They move the ball around on offense and not timid to shoot. Also offensive rebounding. Need two future NBA players on the team that can shoot to make a dent in the acc. Add lville next year and it gets even tougher.

Expect UVA to make major move over next few yrs

Feb 16, 2014, 5:17 PM

And regularly compete with Syracuse, Duke, UNC and Louisville as the big boys in the conference. KJ has been spectacular this year. The best Clemson can hope for is a consistently top 8 in conference record. That would be stellar.

Pretty fair assessment overall. I do believe that if we can

Feb 16, 2014, 2:25 PM

win 5 of our next 6, which is certainly possible considering the slate, and claim 2 wins in the ACC tourney (1 as a favorite and 1 as a dog), then we could squeeze in as an NCAA play-in. It's something to pull for at least.

A lot of folks still seem to discount Brownell's recruiting, but from my viewpoint I've seen incremental improvement in talent and needs every year, including the class upcoming.

If there's one thing that I would like to see, that I believe could help the players get a little more comfortable on offense and perhaps better position us for making more shots late in the game, is if Coach B would designate a 2-minute period or so around the 12 to 14 minute mark in the 1st half and similarly in the 2nd, where we purposefully push the tempo on offense and defense, working to get shots off far quicker when we have the ball, and complementing with a more aggressive, pressing defense. His style can make it difficult for our guys to find a shooting groove, so perhaps adding a few planned stretches where they're encouraged to fire off some shots a little sooner in the shot clock might help activate another player to better complement KJ throughout the course of the game.

We're likely an NIT team, and I'm absolutely fine with that considering the personnel we have and the overall youth of this team. Just think if Blossomgame had been able to play last year, he'd have a year under his belt and likely contributing now as that 2nd scoring threat we need so bad.

Don't have to downgrade OP to make Brownell look good. Clemson needs to help Brownell out by upgrading basketball facilities.

Feb 16, 2014, 9:20 PM

...As chance would have it, however, McDaniels' heroics seem fated to draw little attention. As a team, Clemson struggles mightily to put points on the board, and you can imagine how bad that problem would be without the team's star shooting 52 percent inside the arc. McDaniels has been superb, but he needs some help on offense. He may have to jump to the next level to find it.

22nd rated player, or 22nd rated college player

Feb 16, 2014, 9:22 PM

There are several foreign players expected to be drafted in the first round this year. If you're not guaranteed 1st round you are stupid to leave early. 2nd round contracts are not guaranteed, and 2nd round players rarely end up making NBA rosters in their rookie year. Most end up in the D-League or Europe.

Re: 22nd rated player, or 22nd rated college player

Feb 18, 2014, 3:25 PM

Question Drew

If you sign with an NBA and they place you on reserve and assign to the development league....

1) Are you not still paid by the NBA team
2) Would you receive the minimum NBA salary since you are signed to a NBA contract and assigned to the D league
3) Could you refuse the D league assignment, become a free agent and go to Europe as an unrestricted free agent and negotiate for $$$$

I am not very knowledgeable in NBA salary cap and contract rules.

Thanks
