Basketball and me --

I know most of yall want to know my opinion. Being old must always start with "in my day" (you too are aging and will someday resort to this as experience is a "thing").
Clemson Basketball has always been more average than above. I was on Campus during the days of Coach Bobby Roberts. It was so exciting then one might pi$ their pants during a game. Students got in free. The first game was freshmen, and then the real guys took the court.
You had to arrive very early to get inside as all games were packed. Few who were not students got in. During games no one sat as all stood on the seats. There no A/C crap, it was hot, loud, and healthy.
In the day Randy Mahaffey was like a god on campus. His 3 brothers followed his lead.
Local Clemson guy Jim Sutherland served as 1966-67 senior class president and was awarded the Norris Medal, presented to the best all-around graduating senior and Clemson’s most prestigious undergraduate award. Sutherland was an All-ACC basketball player and ACC Student-Athlete-of-the-Year. He was later drafted by the Seattle Supersonics.
Games were over the top exciting, then all who a dollar to spend raced to Hamburger Dans.
Basketball was incredible fun then. Yall younger fans should step up and help me understand what happened.

Other than 1967, there was nothing exciting about Clemson basketball, "back in the day." And, Randy was the 3rd brother. I doubt Tommy and Donnie "followed his lead."
And, no, your opinion is meaningless.
You are a #######. JMO.

That seems harsh. I admit my facts can be off, as my memory has never been my best feature.
I agree my opinion is meaningless. No harm intended.
I just enjoy the conversation here and sometimes feel a need to add a post.

OK. Sorry. I'm all about Clemson basketball, "back in the day".
I hope you weren't the guy who tripped Roche!
Go Tigers. Forgive me.

Had to get my assistants to look that up as I do drink excellent beer and sometimes stumble. Still, don't believe I ever tripped him.
John Roche won ACC player of the year, and was a first team All American. He was a great player. He was also a coot, but I did not trip him or ever hope for him to score a point.

6FT 5" Sutherland chose to go to Medical School instead of NBA. He was outstanding defensive player and ball handler. I saw him play at Daniel in his senior year score 60 or more pts. about twice as many as Seneca. A freshman, Pete Maravich, about 5ft.8" displayed his precocious ability but did not have his shot going in yet... Mahaffey starred for a few years in the ABA.

"yute". But, being slow and having about a 6" vertical leap meant I was never starter material. I do enjoy seeing those who DO have athletic ability play the game, still. I hope we have some of those on our Tiger team this year!

Dr. Sutherland saved my sons life as a pediatric cardiologist at Emory/Egleston 28 years ago. Thank to Jim, he’s a big strong handsome helicopter pilot instructor now. He was THE MAN and loved Clemson dearly.

and yes, it was! Not as loud as 1980 when we beat #1 Duke in front of 13,500, and the fire marshall said never again though ??

I went in and sat a few rows behind the Duke bench for that game. Did not have a ticket there. Never got asked to move. Forever a Littlejohn attendance record and a victory for the ages. Folks sitting in the aisles everywhere.

Easy - two things.

First, there are a lot more things competing for that college students' time these days. Clemson is bigger with a more diverse student body, and they are not collectively waiting around for the basketball game like they were then. Secondly, Clemson pretty much gave up on being serious about basketball a few years back, accepted permanent mediocrity, and squashed a lot of interest in the process.

I remember all those great basketball evenings in Fike. I never missed a game during my years at Clemson. Two of the Mahaffey brothers lived across the hall from me in E5 and I knew them very well. Nothing can compare with the atmosphere in the gym on basketball nights. It certainly wasn’t an easy place for visitors. I remain an avid round baller fan and look forward to the upcoming season. Win or lose I’m Clemson all the way. Wish more would join me .
