Brownell gets one more year. It's a make the tourney or pack your bags year, but he gets one more year.
His job is literally in Blossomgame's hands. If he leaves, CBB will be fired after next year. If he stays, CBB might have a chance of keeping his job on a year-to-year basis.

and paying him a $1.7M salary for a season plus a $3M buyout after next season is cheaper than paying him a $3.5M buyout right now? Keeping in mind the 3.5 will be negotiated and paid over time.

Very fair point. I thought the buyout drop was more significant than half a mil.
Ok, I'll be content either way. Fire him or give him one more chance.

That's what Caparili makes in a season. To play at UK's level that is what it is going to cost. I really don't think enough donors care about Basket Ball to take that much out of the coffers. I would rather see it go to Dabo and Co myself and win football games.

And to wait a year for the inevitable, it would cost Clemson an extra $200k.

I could not disagree more.
No post season this year, time to go. I'm sorry, I know what the expectations were before the season, but if this team played halfway as well as they played for 11 days in January, or did better than 1-5 against Rutgers, UMass, SCar, Bama, Minn, or UGA, then this discussion would not be happening. The team moved the goal posts, but the team also VASTLY underperformed during the non-conference schedule.
Say he makes the NCAA next year. That is 3 post season tournaments in 7 years. That is well below the standard at Clemson since the NCAA field was expanded, and which includes the Shyatt dumpster fire.
He is either given a token year in the new building, and anything short of an ACC championship and/or a run into the NCAA and he is gone, and let's be honest, that's not going to happen. He goes now, you pay him $5million. He goes next year, and he gets paid $5.2million for the same thing. Save $200k and move on.

So, who comes in and turns this program around?

There's a lot of parody in college basketball. Ask Roy Williams about Northern Iowa. The Bill Self's and Coach K's don't grow on trees.

Will wade, Scott pope, Matt McCall, Travis ford, Steve maisello, rob Murphy, will brown, Scott cherry, Kevin keatts...
I mean, I could go on. There are a ton of good, young coaches that Clemson could get. Not to mention va tech got buzz Williams to take a pay cut to come to the acc.

after last night's debacle (which was the absolute last straw for me), if Coach Brownell still has a job this morning, that will speak volumes about the priority level the administration at Clemson places on men's hoops.
They've already made it abundantly clear that they don't give a **** about wimmins hoops.

that would be extremely disappointing considering the acc is considered a bball conference. if baylor, oklahoma, and louisville can have strong football, basketball, and baseball programs, then clemson should as well. i do not see how drad could just write off mens bball. but you are absolutely correct - he gave up on wimminz hoops.

They don't, but it's only because pressure isn't coming from that angle from the donation base. If anything questions are being asked about Basket Ball it's why are we spending so much on renovations. A real coach is going to be 3 million a year and I don't think we have the stomach for that

NC State and Duke for instance, to get a seat it's like trying to get season tickets to the New England Patriots, there are waiting list. Our stands are barely full ever. Clemson is not nor will it ever be a BB school

There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON Clemson can't be a BB school too.

I leave you with the words of Jeremy Foley, Florida's AD, “If something is inevitable it might as well be immediate." Time for Drad to implement this philosophy with Brownell.
