Baseball electability rules

Mar 1, 2018, 8:59 PM

Maybe not the best way to describe my question. I know a player can sign out of high school or play at least 3 years in college. Can a player decide to leave after a year or two. Is this even allowed? What would be the consequence if a player decided they didn't want to fulfill there 3 years. The basketball one and done rule got me thanking.

in general, if a player signs with a 4 year college, he can't be drafted until after his Jr year. but there are a couple 'loopholes". the player could transfer to a JUCO and be drafted after his soph year. also if a player turns 21 by a certain date (think it is 30 days prior to the draft, he can be drafted regardless of class.
not sure if the player could drop out and sign with one of those "indy" teams or not. i tend to think not.

As you stated, a player is eligible to be drafted out of high school. Once a player enters college, and attends class, he is not eligible to be drafted by an MLB team until he has been out of high school 3 years. The player has the right to to leave college at anytime, however, again...the player is not eligible to be drafted by an MLB team until he has been out of high school 3 years. If the player does choose to leave college before draft eligible, the player could play in the independent leagues and then be be drafted when eligible. That said, rarely...and I mean rarely does a kid leave college early to play in the independent league.

Yeah if it’s a 4 yr college mlb rules say 21 or junior year. If you go the juco route then u can sign after yr 1 or 2.

You can drop out but can’t play for mlb support team. I think all pro sports should adopt nfl rules. 3 yrs or 21.
