People who call Chad's offense gimmicky

Dec 16, 2013, 10:43 AM

Should realize that we really have yet to see the true way Chad wants to operate his offense.

1. He has yet to have a pair of dominating backs that are what he actually wants as far as speed and size

2. he has been trying to upgrade the talent level of the offensive line since he got here

3. Though O loved Tajh as a QB, he really wasn't quite the dual threat that someone like Kelly will be next year. Tajh was what Morris used for a short yardage back...see point No. 1

He has used the passing attack more b/c that is what he had in the cupboard when he arrived. I think with the rise of the line, the bigger stronger backs, and a true runner at QB that this offense will be a sack of hell to stop

Chad's offense is becoming more and more

Dec 16, 2013, 10:50 AM

mainstream. Lots of teams are using variations of what we do. Dont get the "gimmicky" folks.....Most I guess are just no life haters...

The argument that "physical defenses" can stop

Dec 16, 2013, 10:51 AM

the spread so it's a gimmick is moronic. Truly "physical defenses" stop all kinds of offenses. Triple option, wishbone, pro-style, spread, etc...

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Name one defense that was able to stop Auburn this year

Dec 16, 2013, 10:55 AM

Aubrun and Clemson run essentially the same offense.

i think the 2 biggest differences are marshall & prosch. if

Dec 16, 2013, 11:04 AM

cu had a threat in the read option at qb, cu would look a lot different.

i hope we see more of a full time blocking fb/te/hb with a kelly or watson running the read op.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed, a true zone read QB will make it more similar, but

Dec 16, 2013, 11:07 AM

even with next year's team (assuming Kelly or Stoudt are more zone read guys), I doubt our offense will be essentially the same as Auburn's.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would say there may be similar elements, but the offenses

Dec 16, 2013, 11:04 AM [ in reply to The biggest difference is that Auburn has Tre Mason*** ]

are not run really similar at all.

Auburn is 1st in rushing offense. We're 62nd.

65% of our offense came through the air. Auburn's passing game was 34% of their offense.

Auburn's QB ran for over 1000 yards, or almost 25% of their rushing game. Ours ran for 284 yards.

Sorry bud, but I think the difference is FAR more than Tre Mason.

Re: What's that?***

Dec 16, 2013, 11:10 AM

The difference is that we need more oline and bigger backs to truly run what Auburn has. Which is what Morris wants to run offensively...I believe

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not sure about oline, but more power in the running game

Dec 16, 2013, 11:15 AM

is extremely important to furthered success. I wasn't attempting to argue against that. I was saying that Auburn and Clemson are not "essentially the same".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not sure about oline, but more power in the running game

Dec 16, 2013, 11:18 AM

I think Morris wants to be more like that but hasn't got the tools yet.

I think also that AU would like to throw more but they don't have the personnel for that.

Basically the same but with opposite personnel packages

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not sure about oline, but more power in the running game

Dec 16, 2013, 11:25 AM

Blocking schemes, receiver sets, backfield alignments, running lanes and distributed carries, all significantly different. Again, similar elements but not essentially the same.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No they do not. Auburn does spread the the offensive line,

Dec 16, 2013, 10:59 AM [ in reply to Name one defense that was able to stop Auburn this year ]

but the comparison stops right there. Auburn runs a pounding physical back with sophisticated blocking by their very physical offensive line. We do not do that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's an illusion...

Dec 16, 2013, 11:00 AM

Morris inherited Tajh and Nuk, and got Sammy.... he has tweaked things to our strength. If we did his base stuff, we would be less effective than we are now...

go back and watch his tape from Tulsa... we should be more similar AU in the next few years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"I've been working since I was 15 continually until now. I worked 40 hours a week at 15, when it wasn't even legal for 15 year olds to work that many hours."

Morris would love to run his mentor's offensive

Dec 16, 2013, 11:04 AM

scheme, but we have never recruited the line or the back to do it. During the Auburn/Alabama game, after a touchdown, Mason would personally thank his offensive line because he knows they are the reason for his success.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Tulsa did use more zone read in 2010 the we have since

Dec 16, 2013, 11:14 AM [ in reply to it's an illusion... ]

Morris arrived, but their yardage broke down into 43% run and 57% pass. so yeah, they did run more effectively than we did in 2013 (35/65).

Auburn is 66% rush to 34% pass. Again, some similar elements, but not "essentially the same".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's dictated by personnel... Morris inherits Tajh, Nuk, and

Dec 16, 2013, 11:15 AM

Sammy....

you don't run the ball 70% of the time with those guys

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"I've been working since I was 15 continually until now. I worked 40 hours a week at 15, when it wasn't even legal for 15 year olds to work that many hours."

So yeah,

Dec 16, 2013, 11:16 AM

Auburn and Clemson are not "essentially the same".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think they are more than you realize

Dec 16, 2013, 11:26 AM

maybe not this year... but everyone tweaks things to fit personnel.

Basic scheme wise... it's the same, and history says so. Both Gus and Chad, at Tulsa, threw it quite a bit, but also were near the national leaders in rushing. It was b/c they were so balanced.

Gus even threw it more with Cam than now. When he was at Arky, he was similar to what he does now b/c he's backs were so good.

Marshall has made all the difference for AU. Tajh is not that type of QB, and we can't expect Chad to run him like that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"I've been working since I was 15 continually until now. I worked 40 hours a week at 15, when it wasn't even legal for 15 year olds to work that many hours."

Morris learned his offense from Malzahn

Dec 16, 2013, 11:06 AM [ in reply to No they do not. Auburn does spread the the offensive line, ]

Malzahn has better backs and a better OL so he can run the ball more than we can. Personnel dictates the way the offense is run. To say we dont run the same offense is silly.

Dec 16, 2013, 11:09 AM

the read is the qb.

marshall was taken off the woodpile as a former hs qb turned db by uga.

that offense is predicated on his ability to keep outside d leverage at home/honest and gut a defense when they're not.

he's a monster as a read option, run first threat.

tajh was never that.

Recruiting? It's been three years...

Dec 16, 2013, 10:57 AM

I'd say the Chad has had ample time to get his act together.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we'll find out with Kelly next year... he inherited Tajh

as well as Nuk and Sammy

"I've been working since I was 15 continually until now. I worked 40 hours a week at 15, when it wasn't even legal for 15 year olds to work that many hours."

No he has not

Dec 16, 2013, 11:05 AM [ in reply to Recruiting? It's been three years... ]

Chad has not had the type of lineman or running backs that AU has been using this year. He has worked admirably with what he has.

Next, year should be the year we actually see a better running attack than we have had in a long while at CU. It will make us look a lot like AU this year. But we will still have better WR's than Auburn. So our offense is gonna be real hard to stop. If our line gels, Dye and Brooks, and Gallman are gonna be running downhill every weekend.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There was a time when the forward pass was considered...

Dec 16, 2013, 11:05 AM

'gimmicky,' There was a time when the handsaw was used exclusively by carpenters, nails were driven by hand and roof shingles were carried up ladders by men.

I think our offense is a little gimmicky but I also think it along with the HUNH is something that will change the game more than anything since the forward pass. I've grown to love nail guns, lifts and prefab roof trusses too. None of them are against codes and neither is our offense against NCAA rules.

The folks that believe we've tricked our way to the top are just upset with Dabo's success.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Base offense is great. Sammy pass v. USC was gimmicky.

Dec 16, 2013, 11:11 AM

His offense isn't gimmicky, it's great. He has the propensity to call the gimmicky trick plays at the absolute worst times, however.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Morris wants to emulate Malzahn's offense, but....

Dec 16, 2013, 11:16 AM

http://www.orangeandwhite.com/news/2013/dec/08/Auburn-offense-revelation-Morris-Malzahn/?partner=yahoo_feeds

Auburn vs Missouri

Clemson fans who watched the game saw a lot they're familiar with: a shotgun and pistol formation mix, wideouts stretching the field horizontally, backs in motion, tight-end types anywhere and everywhere, a handful of basic rushing plays out of a variety of presentations.

They also saw blocking executed at a very high level. A lot of blocking: offensive linemen sealing off rushing lanes, with backs, tight ends and receivers chasing down linebackers and safeties in the second level.

For the 5-10, 205-pound Mason, it looked almost too easy. And whenever quarterback Nick Marshall opted to keep the football, Missouri was routinely and efficiently blocked at the point of attack. Whenever a defender fell for a bit of misdirection, the inevitable result was a big play.

This is the kind of offense Morris talked about executing when he was introduced as Clemson's offensive coordinator three years ago.

But looking at the whole, and gauging by his own comments, it would seem safe to say that if Morris had his way, he'd love to do to Clemson's opponents what Auburn did to Missouri on Saturday.

The next generation of playmaking runners - Deshaun Watson, Chad Kelly, Tyshon Dye, Wayne Gallman, Jae'lon Oglesby, Adam Choice and C.J. Fuller - may bring just what's needed to take the Tigers there.

With a bit of Auburn-esque help from their friends up front, of course.

Same offense playing in NCG.***
