Bama lost 15 players to portal in 2021

Oct 20, 2021, 7:44 PM

Jus for perspective... it sucks losing guys because steel sharpens steel, but it’s the nature of the college football with the pandora box portal.

more scholarships for outstanding high school recruits will benefit in this system.

It's hard to bat a thousand in recruiting. Players don't develop as planned for a variety of reasons. Sometimes players are taken to fill numbers at positions with little potential for meaningful playing time over a 4 year stay as they will be quickly recruited over.

For the benefit/quality of College Football, it could conceivably be nice for there to be a tangible 'ying' to the 'yang' of the Portal. I do not think unilaterally the Portal is a bad thing to be avoided. But perhaps there should be a reward of some sorts for players that stick with their teams. The NFL is always willing to dig deep into tape/rosters for talent...(except the Bears and Trubisky, scroo that guy).

Perhaps there could be a financial incentive at Draft time. For instance, if you are Drafted, you could be compensated an additional $100k bonus for having a Natty on your resume. The NCAA could foot the bill. Late rounders would certainly appreciate that more than a stupid Rolex (also scroo Chad Kelly, Mr. Irrelevant).

That sounds crazy, but I know when I was growing up the Army would pay an extra $100/month for any volunteer that was an Eagle Scout due to their leadership/commitment. Just saying you don't have to start to necessarily show your talent/value.

Yep...difference is Bama usually signs more HS players than we do...so they have better depth to overcome some of that. They also carry a larger OL room...which I think is crucial (I agree with Dabo..."teams are built from the inside out..."). I'm not a big portal guy, but the way Bama uses it is very smart---sprinkle small amounts in when there is a glaring hole.

Bama is able to do much of what they've done b/c their OL group is usually the best...or one of the best year in, year out. Skill can luxuriate behind that massive wall of protection. Personally, I don't see why, given our brand, we can't have an elite OL room. Also, I don't think Coach Caldwell is to blame for 100% of the issues....its tough when you offer a small few and carry a smaller OL group compared to your peers (Bama, OSU, UGA, etc...).

This isn't a shot @ Dabo, but to Chuck's point above, it obvious we aren't "hitting" on everyone we sign (no one does--its statistically impossible). I think we should be choosy, but we need to open it up just a bit more on the offers (and offer a bit earlier) so we aren't left empty handed when we only get two or three of the seven OL we choose to offer in a cycle. Often times, we are left scrambling when we can't get back in on other highly ranked OL kids b/c we offer too late. We are then left signing a "project" (for a program like CLEM) to fill a slot--that should be a rare, rare event at a school like CLEM. No need to make an already difficult chore (getting good OL--a position that's very hard to project) harder. Statistically, we are just playing with fire...and this year with the injuries and the portal... it has caught up to us.

Good post here JREwing. Appreciate the OP as well. Great perspective and context on recruiting for depth on the OL. Sad thing is I feel like we do this well along the D line so it’s not like we don’t know how to do it at Clemson. Just negligent with OL. Been that way for years.

I’d been curious about other programs and how many players they’re losing to the portal. I’ve said it a few times now and you summed it up better than me - the manner in which programs adjust their recruiting and roster management to the new environment won’t guarantee anything but it will increase their chances for success. The ones that don’t change or are slow to change will suffer.

Excellent posts all around. The portal is equal opportunity. I'd guess we're probably on the low end of losing transfers.

As for DLine, we messed that up too with our management. It bit us last year and 2019 too. We should have been much more competitive with LSU and OSU. But CBV is a genius and got us to the playoffs despite our pee poor roster management. Now that the shoes on the other foot, we get what we got with our offense this year.

Agree with a lot of what you said there. The bama oline can make mediocre skill players look like superstars. Same with Georgia, isn’t their current qb a walk-on? We need an elite OL and the rest will fall in place. I also believe being in the ACC doesn’t help us at all getting high end OL guys, they want to play in the SEC.

The bigger question is how many players has Alabama signed from the portal?

Those that aren't good enough or have attitude issues transfer. Bama just gets some other studs to come in and see how they fit in. No skin off of their back at Bama.

Saban clearly doesn’t know how to evaluate or develop talent.

He also obviously doesn’t have a good pulse on his players and their desires.

You're right judge. Why would we ever want to follow the Bama or Kirby smart formula... Seeing how both are beating our brains out recruiting.

Actually, in 2021, bammer lost a net of 7 players to portal

According to the 24/7 site, bammer had 11 players transfer out and 4 players transfer in.

Using the same source, Clemson football had 8 players transfer out with no transfers in.

It is what happens on really good teams. I think the transfer portal was the best thing that has happened for players in a long time. It gives them a chance to play instead of practice and watch knowing 3 people in front of them have to get hurt before they will see time.
