Rewatched the ND game from 2020

I specifically paid attention to DJ to see the difference between him then and last year. I think having Rogers in the short passing game and screens to Powell padded his stats a bit.
He had the same ole accuracy issues in that game with several bad throws, including a critical third down.
Still, he looked so much better in that game. Still puzzled a bit.

Right.
DJ looked good with better WRs and Etienne at RB.
DJ looked bad with bad WRs and freshmen RBs.

I would take the 2020 OL, especially the IOL. Tate, Trotter, and Rayburn weren't nearly as good as Bockhorst, Stewart, and Putnam.

Bad memory for me

I had a stroke the morning after that game; and a heart attack in January 2020, less than a week after our previous loss. Don't think I wasn't quaking in my boots during that last game with Ohio State!

I was in the hospital during covid a few days after gall bladder surgery. Of course the nurses started coming in as the game was winding down, fuzzy memories through the Morphine. One of the very few Clemson games I can ever remember that I just didn't give a crap about.

Sadly, I will live to see many more losses (but a lot more wins). Go Tigers!

If you really break it down though in similar situations, he had the exact issues he had this year. ND sold out to stop Etienne and didn't really pressure DJ until OT, and then he looked like he did in the UGA game back there once they pinned their ears back and went after him, knowing we HAD to throw.
But yes, as someone else said, surround him with better players, he will play better--but I do think he is who he is, it's up to the coaches to scheme him into successful situations and not ones he has struggled with every year.

Agreed. DJ will be a competent QB for us if we scheme to his strengths and away from his weaknesses. He is not (nor will he ever be) DW4 or Trevor, meaning I don't think we will ever see him singlehandedly will his team to victory (arguably Trevor never did that either but I digress). What he can do is be the guy that helps us not lose the game. Unfortunately last year (1st 5-6 games) we did not properly address his strengths and weaknesses in our gameplan. The 2nd half of the year we seemed to gameplan more effectively (also helped that Shipley and Pace were more healthy later in the season).

2019 Fiesta Bowl game against OSU. He was, without question, targeted in the first half. He went out but came back in and, along with the defense, won the game. The next, well, ... not so much.
