UNC 81 - Duke 77 tonight or or 1974 NCSU 103 - UMD 100?
Hate em all or not, both games are classics.

Agree. The '74 game is still in it's own level, imo.

The '74 game

They were both great games on the court. The 1974 game changed college basketball off the court forever. State went dancing and the team ranked 1b in the country sat home on the couch.

Ask our friends in Cola. They were ranked #1 iirc

and NC State beat them in the ACC final game. The regionals were in Cola, and all of a sudden there were plenty of tickets available! I went to see NC State, St Bonaventure, Villanova and Nigara play - 1970.

Riker & Owens. I think it was 1970, so I would've been in 7th grade and just starting to really get into sports. I remember listening to the late games on my little Panasonic radio with headphones, because I was supposed to already be in bed. I probably still have the Sports Illustrated with them on the cover as the #1 team in the nation... somewhere in a closet or storage unit. Kids all over SC were doing the "Catholic cross thing" before free throws, because John Roche did that. And we had no clue what it meant...
But again, yes... you could be the #1 team in the nation, get upset in your conference tournament... and be sitting at home watching other teams play. Because only conference champs were eligible to play in the NCAA playoffs, or what we call March Madness today. There weren't 64 teams back then, only 16. So basically it started with a Sweet Sixteen. As I recall, John Roche sprained his ankle or something, couldn't play, and UofSC lost a heart-breaker in the ACC conference final.
Roche was one of the best guards I've ever seen at the college level. What a sweet jump shot, kinda like Jerry West. And tough as nails. The whole team was... Frank McGuire recruited all those hardnosed kids from NYC. White boys who would fight at the drop of a hat.
Good times.

Dad took me to the '74 game. Last's nights game was a classic, but the 1974 game was a once in a life time game.
Both were outstanding, hard fought, leave it on the court contest.

very small and elite club of ACC legends... Michael Jordan, Len Bias, etc. that had unbelievable physical skills.
Any of you old farts remember they said he could make change off the top of the backboard? As in, swipe 2 dimes and a nickel and leave a quarter. Only 6-4 but had a 48 inch vertical jump as I recall...

But for someone who isn’t quite so old and born in 1985, I would say yesterday was the best ever. It’s just a matter of age I believe.

have an accurate opinion about a game one didn't see. Anyone who saw them both knows the '74 game was on another level, mostly because the players were. 14 players played in the game: 9 were drafted that year, the entire starting 10 minus 1. .

kids leaving college early as Jrs, Sophs, or even FR as one-and-dones. Everybody played until they graduated as SRs. Wow, 9 out of 10 drafted... unbelievably talented teams.
