Back in business after an AT&T nightmare! Caution: Rant!

Jun 17, 2022, 11:57 AM

The state was installing those Collapsible Barriers on the side of the road and drove two metal posts through the AT&T line that branches off to serve three accounts.

DAY ONE: I told the state crew. They promised to contact AT&T.

DAY TWO: I contact AT&T to make sure the state did. They had not. I despise calling AT&T! "Walter" in Bangladesh (who must have been talking from a child care center) insisted that, despite the cable being cut in half, he could repair it if I followed his "few simple steps". I hung up on "Walter" who refused to listen. He called back three times to get me to reset my modem.

DAY THREE: I try to talk with AT&T again. I still despise calling AT&T!! This time, I reach "Jack" whom I can barely understand. I find myself talking like Jack hoping he will understand. He finally sets an appointment for a technician to come out...7 days out!

DAY TEN: I patiently wait for the technician who is scheduled between 8am and noon. I an "tickled" with text messages all day long about his arrival, his running late, and (at 7pm) his inability to arrive that day.

DAY ELEVEN: Silly me, I thought I would be first the next day since I was cancelled the day before. At 3pm I call AT&T...did I mention that I loathe calling AT&T? I reach "Arnold" in parts unknown. The soonest he can get me another appointment is 9 days later. He also wants to run internal tests to see if he can resolve the problem.

DAY TWELVE: Thinking there is strength in numbers, I get my neighbor to call AT&T to report her outage and that THE LINE WAS CUT!. They convince her she needs a new modem. It arrived the next day.

DAY THIRTEEN: I call an AT&T director. His secretary freaks out that I would dare try and call him and has a Repairs Manager call me right back. The very nice lady manager listens to me and learns THE LINE HAS BEEN CUT!

DAY FOURTEEN: Technician comes out to my house. After much testing, determines perhaps the line has been severed. He schedules a repair the next day.

DAY SIXTEEN: Repairman comes out at 9am. He determines the severed line will have to be dug up. He calls a digging crew. They arrive at 1pm and dig huge hole. AT 3pm, repairman comes back with fellow repairman. They fence off hole, set up Lemonade Stand tent, and go to work. Repairman later tells me that the line had been severed by two poles in two places. AT 8pm, I once again have Internet.

Kudos to the repairman from Anderson that seemed interested in making the repair and genuinely outraged that it took so long to bring forth.

I foresee a day when one of the options on service calls will be "Premier Service" for an added fee. Don't you hate paying extra to have people do what they should do anyway? I went through a car wash last week. The lady wanted to know if I wanted to pay an extra $10 to have the bugs removed from my bumper and grill? $10 on a $20 wash! I told her just to leave them on there. She looked at me like I was the crazy one.

GET OFF OF MY LAWN!!!!

I'm afraid American labor has taken 2 steps backwards in some cases. We had a street light out for 4 months before we finally got someone to replace the bulb. Yes. the bulb.

I make no further attempts to understand foreign people

in "Tech Support". My standard line now is: "Ma'am (or Sir), I mean no personal disrepect, but I cannot understand you. Can you please connect me with someone who can speak American English?"

I have always gotten transferred to a more understandable person the second time around. Much like anything else in modern service, if you want it, you have to ask for it special like.

I always ask for someone who can speak the Queen's English.

That way you don't offend them because India was a former British colony.

Oh no! They are in my neighborhood now

Installing their Fiber Network even though our HOA voted 54-6 to keep them out. I’m seeing sprinklers & Invisible Fence repairs coming up soon.

You should march your HOA to the guillotine because trying

If you have sod be prepared for the worst.

They ran though my neighborhood and destroyed every yard. Sprinkler heads, lamp posts, flowerbeds, you name it. They don’t give AF and would just assume drop a dump in your front yard as clean up after themselves. I threatened one guy with my dog. ####### ran away from a 70 lbs labradoodle…

I have had similar experiences with AT&T, though not to your degree. Clearly its policy is to prevent customers from dealing with anybody locally and to make it as difficult as possible to get a service technician to your house. "I despise calling AT&T!" Amen, brother!

So does anyone have good experience with an alternative to ATT?

Check out Carolina Connect, who offers great speed and service! They are a subsidiary of Mid-Carolina Electric Co-op, and are also installing in Newberry and Aiken Electric co-op areas, and even in some Dominion areas. I have been with them for over three years, and haven't lost internet service for even one second! Their fiber goes all the way to your router, which they provide at no charge. You won't beat Carolina Connect!

I’ve lived through similar scenarios. Heaven knows why I decided to read that and relive it.

I’ll probably have PTSD from reliving those nightmares now. Thanks.

You did make it comical and I appreciated that!

I feel for you tremendously...I needed them to move my Directv dish & it was like three weeks out after the first appointment I set..Which they cancelled the day before of service...Your last paragraph about the car wash almost made me lose a mouthful of cream soda...Priceless

I worked for SCDOT managing a county maintenance unit. AT&T was the worst utility to deal with. I wouldn't be surprised if they were notified and just didn't bother. Also they probably neglected to mark their 811 lines.

When U-verse first came out they had great customer service. They ran it into the ground just like every other cable company. The last time I called them they had me reboot my Gateway even though I told them I had already done it 3 times.

LOL! I really enjoyed kicking ATT/DTV out of our house.

Jun 18, 2022, 7:05 AM

They called me and told me they were going to upgrade me to digital service, and that it would cost less money. I asked what would it do to my internet speed. After multiple sets of clicks and moments of silence, he said it would make it SLOWER! And I only had 3mps DSL. We decided not to put me on the upgrade list. Luckily cable company pushed fiber and now I have 940mps internet, no home phone, and stream TV.

Just wait and see what happens after you die. Your heirs will eventually call AT&T to cancel your account because you're dead and no longer require their services. First AT&T will say they're so sorry for your heirs' loss. Then they'll ask who your favorite actor was to verify your account. If they don't know, they'll be hosed. AT&T will then say they need to call the phone number they have on file to ask if it's OK with you if your heirs cancel your account. They better be able to answer your phone, pretend they're you, and tell AT&T who your favorite actor was or they won't cancel the account. Best of luck to your heirs. Same scenario happened to my wife, twice, when each of her parents passed.
