It could be true, or it could be the SEC not showing its hand (which would be smart).

They need to keep up with the Big 10 - both will expand further.

I had thought 20 and could see 24. They maybe waiting till 2036 where the ACC teams will finally be available. ????

Im not surprised at a release or leak like this. The next phase.. IF it happened.. will be a little ways out as there are a lot of things to figure out. If the B1G gets aggressive and wants a presence down south, the SEC will likely move to block that as both SEC and ESPN would not want B1G and Fox to get any southeastern football footprint. So it looks like it will be a waiting game... but out $32 million per school from the ACC is shrinking by the moment as everyone will get to renegotiate once or maybe twice before 2036 finally gets here.

keeping our envied path to the playoff. The only thing is, recruiting will become an issue with that perception that the BIG and SEC are a power 2.
This article actually seems legit and makes a lot of sense.
1. Why would the SEC want to expand at this point? They have great money and only have to split it 16 ways, instead of 20 or 24. I don't see any four team coming in an being valued to the point the cover that and give the others an increase in payout.
2. It does make sense to want to seem exclusive and special instead of huge.
3. They want to protect the game itself. IT makes sense that they would not want to make 60 teams non-factors regarding the playoffs.

This is the opinion of only one, but Peter Woods said he didn't care where we played--in the ACC or in the SEC.

Smart young man! He’s seen Clemson’s success. As for reaching the NFL, I’m sure he knows NFL scouts find talent, even in lower division schools.

1- No idea what SEC ADs their “sources” are talking to, could be coot management saying “yep we’re all good here”
2- mentions the idea that adding teams to add teams is not worthwhile but then say FSU would be a logical addition, SEC already has the state of Florida. UNC adds a new state but not the type of football they are looking for
3- The SEC, poacher of all poachers, will just sit idly by while B1G starts grabbing ND and whoever else they want
4- only villains in movies reveal their ulterior motive before it happens. Most likely smoke and mirrors and misdirection until everyone gets blindsided

If Clemson wins another pair of nattys or FSU and Miami

get their stuff together, SEC and B1G have to grab them up. Unless those conferences are content with only the money, but losing the national championship to a team in a lesser conference, they will have to expand further.
Clemson’s recruiting is on fire, even in the ACC after all of the expansion talk. UNC, Duke, UVA can still win championships in basketball in the ACC. If we demand unequal payouts, and can pull within $20 mil/yr of P2 with a clear path to the playoffs, we’ll be fine — or we’ll be scooped up once the GOR is figured out/it’s cheaper to leave.
We aren’t Cincy or UCF or TCU or Baylor. We just have to keep doing what we’ve been doing. The SEC hasn’t helped UofSC or Tenn or Ole Miss field championship caliber teams. Or Michigan or Wisconsin or Penn State, etc etc.

The more teams the SEC adds, the further down the pecking order uof7c falls.
Uof7c was already around 13th of the 14 teams (ahead of only Vandy) in most years. OU and Texas dropped them down two more spots and the addition of Clemson, FSU and Miami would drop them even further.

Might be right. They will change their tune when the B1G
Jul 11, 2022, 12:09 PM

...offers Miami, FSU, Clemson, UNC and UVA to form an east coast division with Penn State, Maryland and (ugh!) Rutgers.
When they see those major television markets about to be sliced in half by Fox and the B1G, they will quickly move to add the actual southern teams to their fold.
Not sure if actual southern teams includes Miami or not. They have never seemed to fit that mold.

Bluffing For Negotiations Sake
Jul 11, 2022, 12:26 PM

Could this be "leaking out" so that when an offer is actually extended it "increases the sense of urgency"?
Like the used cars sales person saying, "I have hundreds of people looking at this beauty; you better act immediately"!
More teams, including one the caliber of Clemson, would mean you can demand "more money" so you wouldn't worry about the splitting of funds. It would be no less than it is now; likely better if Clemson were added.
My two pennies!

B1G television deal is nearing finalization

Would be smart for SEC to say they are done, see what the B1G gets, expands and reopens negotiations to get a larger payout.
Sankey has been at this longer than Warren. He knows what he’s doing.

So funny....

The SEC WANTS the narrative that they aren't playing any role in breaking up the existing conferences. I would say it too. Put the onus on the B1G and take heat off. Smart.
Here's the issue no one talks about: If the SEC and B1G want to completely control the playoff, they HAVE TO expand past 16. Too many good FB schools are left out and there would be a public outroar. This is going to two mega-conferences; and Dabo is probably right....eventually down the one...one entity ala the NFL.

JREwing - yep! The outroar and absolute demand from the football-watching public """""LIKELY"""""" wouldn't stand for it no matter what the Big 10 or SEC wanted. Even some in those conferences to be honest. Why? Because it's supposed to be "Sport"!
Pricing out the best competition doesn't make you better; it just makes you better funded.
In no way, shape or form could I potentially see a college football world devoid of Clemson(3), Miami(5), FSU(2) and Pittsburgh(9)! 19 National Championships and they wouldn't be able to compete at the highest level of the sport? Wrong! Even some people who may not be that big into the sport would call that out i.m.o
And, I didn't mention some of the other big State schools like Oregon, North Carolina, Arizona, Arizona St, etc.
It might be attempted. But, wouldn't stand.

by Notre Dame joining the Big Ten. College sports is not a zero sum game.
Would be interesting if both those conferences held pat at 16...the ACC picked up a couple (Who, I don't know...anything less than ND + a player to be named later would, I realize, infuriate most) and the PAC 12 grabbed a handful of Big 12 teams (or vice versa...who really cares at this point). Four 16-team conferences.

Maybe Miami and FSU come back strong!
Jul 11, 2022, 6:55 PM
|
|
With money being a big player and outright "no shame game" right now! Could FSU and Miami start keeping some of those sunshine state players at home. Are there sponsors who want to make people go back to talking about how good football is in the state of Florida out there? The TV revenue with the right schools(WVU, UCF, Memphis, Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma St). All of those with the exception of maybe Memphis has been in the top 10 at some point over the last 10 years in football. Maybe Memphis has too, IDK. But, they should be good enough to warrant a "good deal"! Not as good as Big 10 or SEC schools; but "Good"! Good enough!
We'll have to see. Hoping for the best. End of the day however it shakes out; it's all about the Clemson Tigers still though!

Yes very true. People have to remember,we weren’t ACC Champs
Jul 11, 2022, 7:46 PM

Last year. Pitt was.
I think Miami is obviously making moves and FSU seems to be rebuilding. NCSU looks strong too.
I have said it for years…A conference with Clemson, Miami and FSU in it should be a “big boy” conference. There is no reason Pitt, UVA, VT, NCSU, Louisville and UNC can’t be good. GT won a championship in 1990 (or thereabouts).
If we have to stay in the ACC, we don’t have to act like it’s a death sentence.
