4 easy fixes for an offensive spark!!!

Of course I know I’ll be called a coot or asked if I’ve ever coached , but here it goes. Before anyone responds, “ these coaches have done this and that and they are the experts”, I must remind you 1) They had a 1st and goal at the 4 yard line against UGA and called 3 miserable passes , instead of running QB power off tackle 3 or 4 times with our 250 lb QB. None of the pass plays had a chance, but of course they would probably say, “we didn’t want to risk a fumble “. 2) They put the offense in a terrible situation running a play out of the shotgun, in the end zone against a stacked GT defense , instead of a simple under center snap and fall forward to run out the clock. The worst thing that could have happened was to have a live ball in the end zone where there could possibly be a fumble and recovery for a TD. Snapping it 5 yards deep and risking an exchange was down right stupidity. The best option would have been to snap it straight back out of the end zone, take the safety and free kick it away with 10 seconds in the clock. Anyway, for the quick fixes
1) Go hurry up / warp speed on offense. We need to create confusion and chaos for the defenses going forward and use our supposed depth to our advantage.
2) Commit to 10 -15 called QB runs. At this point DJ is a better runner than passer and with his big frame can be a load if he gets to the second level. This will keep the defense honest , hold the linbackers and open up the short passing lanes.
3) We’ve got to take 3 -5 deep shots (30 to 40) a game. Roll out the QB if needed , but we’ve got a bunch of tall athletic WRs and we’ll complete a few and get a few interference penalties as well. Preferably, this is a 2nd and short call , so a there’s a chance for a more conservative call to get the first down.
4) Move Will Taylor to slot receiver for 6 or 8 plays a game and get him the ball in space either on a get sweep or short WR screen. The guy is electric and will cause defenses to account for him . A few successes and he even becomes a decoy.
None of these things would take much time to install, but the rewards could be just enough to get us over the hump. The defense is stellar, we don’t need to be all world on offense, just mediocre would do. Right now we stink.

Agree with the fixes you suggested. Against GA there really wasn't a right answer. If they ran it they probably would have got stuffed. Who knows.
No doubt they should of ran DJ more.

Spot on especially regarding tempo. I get sometimes seeing what the defense is doing but that slow we may as well huddle up . Also the defense shouldn’t know what’s coming so not sure why scoping them out deep in play clock is needed

I disagreed with a few points you made about what's wrong, but totally agree with your fixes. It's rare as a former player (not clemson) I see football strategy on here someone brings up that isn't obvious. You definitely hit a few I haven't thought of before. Good stuff man

Good analysis I would add since O line weak I would play at times Davis and Lay the two big tight ends to help block and also as a passing threat Galloway having a bad year dropping passes and not blocking well On our last play out of end zone he was throw around like a rag doll look at tape

A great idea. Sure wish our coaches would try this. But they are not smart enough. We will throw a 10 screen pass 50 yards and blame the o line. He is bad and will not get better.

You nailed it. You don’t have to be a coach either to see these things. We have got to get Taylor on the field more. This kid looks like a faster version of Hunter.
Tempo- I have been baffled for years as to why we went away from it. It helps the run game too as the defense may not be fully set and it will create gaps. Heck you can even run the same play back to back. Wears the defense out with depth as well obviously. Our oline needs that advantage.
Deep shots- we have always taken our shots then here comes 2021 and we are not throwing deep at all. You have to show the treat of it. This concerns me that they don’t trust DJ to do it.
This offensive run is predicated on the fact that the QB may run. If you don’t have this threat we will really struggle in our offense.

I agree with your points and would like to add that I would like to see some motion with WT if he is quickly transitioned to the slot position. I think he has the quickness and athletic ability to effectively run the WR jet sweeps we used to see with Artavis Scott and even Ray Ray Mcloud. Couple the sweeps with effective end blocking from Davis Allen and possibly Lay, and we have a new wrinkle within our offense. Also Taylor could be effective at running the traditional WR quick screen that used to be bread and butter as an effective run option. I would also add that Williams and Ross need to be boundary receivers who can give DJ a 50/50 option on deep balls.

Agreed.
Tempo was used by some innovative coaches who had advantage at every position except OL. They couldn't block the play well enough to get the ball to their skill players, because their rival kept a dominant DL.
So, wear them out, run them like crazy so by late in the game there legs are gone.
Our OL needs tempo for sure. Only thing about it, you have to gain at least 4 yards on 1st down. Otherwise, your play calling will be more predictable. Look at what Cause was able to do to us. Pitts used a quick "sugar huddle" in 2016.
May have to give a quick class on option cut blocks too. Mixed in with straight up blocking and tempo.

Good effort but I don't really think you're onto something here.
1) Meh. Kindof a gimmick. May help some, not much.
2) We just need the QB to read the end on zone reads rather than handing off every time. We don't need to predetermine the read.
3) It's less about deep shots and more about exploiting the coverage. We have teams playing press-man coverage with 2 safeties covering the deep ball. The middle of the field is wide open. We need slants, posts, crossing routes, TE outs/hooks, etc. If they adjust to take those away, then we pop it over their head.
4) We don't need slow developing lateral plays. We need quick hitting plays. I don't care who's in the slot, we need slants and 5-yard pop routes, we don't need to go side to side.
