Awful!!!

Sep 8, 2014, 8:43 AM

First let me say from the start I thought Don Munson was a horrible choice for play by play and the backstabbing of Yanity was despicable. However, I said the decision had been made and let's give him a chance. Well, I could not make it to the game this weekend as it was my drill weekend at Fort Jackson and at lunch I turned the game on the radio. Several of my unit members, many from other states with no knowledge of the situation, immediately commented on how horrible our radio announcer was. The said he sounded like an excited kid and other comments.
Dan Rad said he made this move in part to establish "a brand" for Clemson. Well Dan this brand is embarrassing. I never thought anyone could be worse than the screaming Todd Ellis but we have found it.
Make your voice heard. Email D Rad.

Have to disagree with you. Listened to most of the game, and the mistake was hiring Rodney Williams and keeping Patrick Sapp. Those two have no business being anywhere near a microphone. Let's face it, there will never be another Jim Phillips, no matter who is brought in to do play-by-play.

Munson has been awful for all the years that he has done Clemson baseball, so everyone who listens to baseball knew he would be just as bad if mot worse doing football. Fortunately I have been to both of the first two games and only had to listen to the pregame and postgame shows. Those are bad enough!

the era of great radio announcers has passed

Sep 8, 2014, 9:11 AM [ in reply to Re: Awful!!! ]

name the last Clemson football game that was not on TV. In the 70's ,even 80's, I'd guess well over 50% of Clemson (or any school) fans listened to games over the radio. In the 90's it probably dropped to 20-25%. Now it's probably 5% or less.

I would say for basketball and baseball, there is still a small need, as they are all not televised (yet) - I'm not really counting net broadcasts as being fully televised, as everyone does not do streaming quite yet.

But for football, the radio broadcast has almost reached obsolescence.

Agree, baseball probably the most. Most of the basketball games are on espn3. In my 30s and I can't remember the last time I tried to find a game on the radio.

I talked to a member of DRad's staff this weekend....

Sep 8, 2014, 9:07 AM

who said that DRad has acknowledged privately to a number of people within the Clemson athletic department that the whole Pete Yannity/Don Munson decision was one he now regrets.

Based on D Rad's experience at GT, there will be many, very expensive mistakes in his decisions while he is at Clemson. I hope he changes his mantra, but it is hard for a leopard to change its spots. I did have 1 GT grad tell me he thought we made a good hire with him, though, but it was only 1.

I also listened to some of the last game. It reminded me of listening to your local high school game done by a very small local station, nowhere near the standard of Phillips and Yanity. This needs to change and soon. However I thought Rodney did a good job, especially explaining football terms, etc.
