Positive update from bravetiger!

Jan 31, 2014, 2:53 PM

Not a prayer request this time. Guys I have been through hell. I had already accepted the fact that I would be on high doses of heavy pain meds the rest of my life. The bad thing is I had gotten to the point where I was taking the meds as much to keep from having withdrawals symptoms as I was the pain. Was I taking it for pain? Yes. Would I have has hot flashes, anxiety, and nausea without the meds? HECK YES. When I was at church last week I told God I felt out of control and needed His help. I had already been trying to come off slowly. Guys, I was on Oxycodone, Lortab, and a Fentanyl patch. The patch slowly released 75 mcg. Per hour into my bloodstream. I also took anywhere from 4-5 30 mg. Oxycodone a day, and 20-30 mg. of Lortab a day. I was not myself at all. I started hating myself. In 3 weeks I have come down to 0 Lortab per day, 2-3 Oxycodone, and I have cut my patch down to 25%.

I did some conversion math and figured out I was taking the equivalent of 35-40 10mg. Lortabs. I am down to the equivalent of about 12 now. Please don't judge. This is a buildup of chronic pain over the last 7 years. I am so glad I am coming off and my goal is to be completely off in the next 4-6 weeks. I can do this. I had to take a look in the mirror and see if I liked what I saw. I didn't. On the other hand I'm not ashamed of myself. I didn't get to this point because I took prescription drugs just for a feeling. I got past the denial and now I'm headed to normalcy.

My grandma had the same problem and found relief

Jan 31, 2014, 3:23 PM

She had some sort of stimulator implanted in her back to break the pain cycle. She had numerous back surgeries and was still popping pain pills like candy just to make it through the day. After the stimulator surgery she has been relatively pain free for the last 3 years and only takes pain medication for the occasional acute pain. She is back to being the grandma I remembered grown up, and not the pain pill addled person she had become. I have no idea if this would be applicable to your issue, and I have no idea what the technical term for what she has installed in her back is called. I do know that she has to sit next against a charger to recharge the battery every once in a while. Wouldn't hurt to look into it.

You've selected your strategy---just stick with it and don't give up even if you slip off the straight and narrow once in a while. I'm astounded all those meds haven't clouded your judgement, but remarkably, you seem to still have your wits about you and are cognizant of the dangers that exist continuing along as you are.

Good luck. And try to let others help--even if its just by listening and encouraging you.

Re: Positive update from bravetiger!

Jan 31, 2014, 6:37 PM

I have the spinal cord stimulator that I have to lay a charger over the battery that was implanted under my skin at my hip. It takes about 3 hours for a complete charge, that will last about 25/28 days. That only helps that h&ll fire burning awful throbbing to the bone pain in my left leg from nerve damage, and it does nothing for my back. I was on 2/30mg oxycodone 3 times a day, with 100mcg Fentanyl patch every 48 hours, 1 mg. xanax 3 times a day. I'm now only on 100mg Morphine ER 3 times a day. I've been in more back pain these last 6 months than I have ever been in the last 7 years. But I'm just trying to learn to deal with the pain. All those pain meds had me feeling like they were killing me. In 7 years I have never even once taken more than I was allowed to take in a day. In fact I always had oxycodone and xanax left. Never a patch though, if you don't change that patch on time, it will put you in a h&ll of a with/drawl and a h&ll of a tail spin. I pray everyday that the lord will help me get through each day dealing with more pain than I'm use to dealing with. If people only had a small clue of the pain we live with daily. They would know how important it is to take extra care of their back. They would never take any risk doing anything that could hurt their back. The best cure to for a back, is don't do anything that could cause surgery. After surgery, your life will never be the same as before....

Thank you everyone!!!

Jan 31, 2014, 7:27 PM

Alltime52- I am praying for you! I had my 3rd back surgery in November. Looking back I wish I had never had the first one. However, the reason I did was because I was already dragging my leg. My wife would drive all the time because of pain. I would just sit and have tears going down my face. The original fusion broke 3 months after surgery. One good cough or sneeze and I would collapse. I've come a long way. But, I will be praying for you. God can still heal. It is just very hard to have faith when you feel the pain. I just have to claim that I'm healed and look for the next day to always be better than the last. I'm sure I will have an incredible testimony when I'm off completely. Right now it has been about 2-3 hours since any meds. I have a gnawing feeling in my stomach and the least little thing sort of sets me off. It is miserable and I pray no one ever has to go through it. Tiger Family, and any gamecock stragglers (lol), thank you for the encouraging words, prayers, and faith. God bless you guys and girls.

Now let's have an incredible signing day next week! ;)

Four back surgeries with two fusions. Five surgeries when counting the Spinal cord stimulator. My back pain got much worse after each and every back surgery except for the implanting of the Spinal Cord stimulator. The stimulator actually done something that helped.
