Another instance of where the CFP Committee got it wrong

Dec 5, 2016, 11:13 AM

It has been discussed ad nauseum about why OSU got in over Penn State. Since the committee truly wanted OSU, after they sat on the couch all weekend with no risks for injury or losing, then OSU should have been given them the toughest path to the Championship by making them play the #1 seed. Therefore, the rankings should have been:

1 - Alabama
2 - Clemson
3 - Washington
4 - Ohio State

Just my $0.02 worth.

Edit:

After reading comments, I should have left names out and said that any team that sits home on the couch while the other three play in conference championship games, then that team should be #4 regardless of how good they may appear to be. I was not arguing the case of OSU over anyone, just that they sat on the couch and only dropped one spot, when they could have lost and dropped out.

Counter argument is do you think UW is a better team than OSU?

Dec 5, 2016, 11:17 AM

While I would not have minded seeing them punished for not being in the B1G Championship Game, I just don't think UW is a better team than OSU.

Yep

Dec 5, 2016, 11:18 AM

If OSU is the better team then they got it right, if they are not then the committee did us a favor and Bama should be ticked.

Who I or you think is better is subjective. Penn State beat OSU heads up on the field, had the same number of wins, and won their conference championship (a major reason the BIG 12 gets less credibility). Facts - OSU lost their conference and lost to Penn State but get voted in because we THINK that they might be better.

When the little man has legitimate shot at making it to the finals, it needs to be respected. The big guy is respected more than enough.

How often will Ohio State get there vs. Penn State. It's about more that just who you think is better. Penn State could actually beat them again, who knows? It's about doing the right thing and giving those schools who beat the best in a given year and do what they are supposed to get rewarded. If the roles were reversed I guarantee OSU gets picked! Penn State may not have this chance for 20 more years but you know Ohio State will because of recruiting. It's about a lot more that "giving" it to Ohio State in the year 2016. It's about a historical fairness to everyone involved in college football. Just my take.

Aside from all the factors that have been thrown out as to why PSU got left out, I would further add:

1. The way OSU lost to PSU was considered. OSU was winning for most of that game and 2 late special teams blunders did them in. Yes, a loss is a loss, but PSU would be crazy to think they outplayed OSU in that game.

2. I personally suspect that the pedo thing is still in play. If they are in the playoff, imagine all the talking heads having to say "just 5 short years ago..." No one wants to hear that story right now. It's too soon, even if all the personnel have moved on or are rotting in jail or hell.

You could easily argue Penn St is better than OSU since they

I think they have the toughest path... Go Tigers!!!!

A reasonable compelling argument could be made....

Dec 5, 2016, 11:22 AM

for either Ohio State, Washington or Penn State.

I think Michigan was always on the outside looking in.

All the CFP Committee accomplished was fueling the fire for an expanded eight team playoff.

Ding, Ding, Ding! Give the man a cigar. Saddest thing is they should have thought about that sooner. +1

That final ranking is all about matchups for TV. The 2 bluebloods,

Dec 5, 2016, 11:23 AM

Bama & OhSt, were going to be in opposite brackets. The committee will deny it forever, but many on the committee(and Espin) hope for a Bama-OhSt final. It's all about TV ratings. I knew two weeks ago, this is exactly what the final ranking would be, if these four won out. I just laughed when everyone talked about OhSt dropping to 4, and us playing Wash in the semi. It wasn't going to happen!

For those saying, "But in 2014, Bama & OhSt were 1 & 4", remember, OhSt made a big leap just to get to #4 that year, they could have not possibly justified getting them higher.

Dec 5, 2016, 11:25 AM

agree but also disagree

Dec 5, 2016, 11:23 AM

At that point you are punishing Alabama by making them play a "tougher" opponent, and Bama went out and played like we did. Personally I would have put Penn State in at 4. I would not mind OSU being at number 4 but not purely out of we are punishing them for not playing a Conf Championship. The CFPC is walking a slippery slope with messages they are sending: play tough opponents: unless you lose, win a conference championship: unless it doesn't benefit you, win head to head: unless you are more talented.

Every criteria they throw out there are basically tie breakers for teams: and they have so many criteria that they can point to one for any given scenario and say that was the most important for this individual comparison. As long as the CFPC is impartial it all works out in the end.

Going to 8 teams would completely render Conf Championships meaningless and I would hate that. To me it is a goal just under winning the National Championship.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But OSU scheduled OK on the road, and killed them. Plus,

Dec 5, 2016, 11:26 AM

they beat two other top ten teams, and their only loss was to a top ten team. I would have picked Penn St. also, but picking OSU ain't wrong.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-jospehg.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"picking osu ain't wrong"...

Dec 5, 2016, 12:19 PM

By picking osu the CFPC violated the selection criteria that they established:
- conference champion? - NO
- head to head winner? - NO
- Strength of schedule (win all OOC games) - yes
- Comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory) - mich only?

I don't see the justification based on the criteria established for the selection. psu should have been in over osu.

Go Tigers!!!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What am I missing here?

Dec 5, 2016, 11:31 AM

OSU did receive the toughest path to a national championship. Case closed.

Re: Another instance of where the CFP Committee got it wrong

Dec 5, 2016, 11:45 AM

The committee did not get it wrong. They punished PSU for losing two games and punished UW for a weak OCC. Your problem is the selective use of facts as you use the ones which support your opinion and ignore the ones that don't.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They want an Alabama/Ohio State final.........

Dec 5, 2016, 12:02 PM

period! This is the best way, in their minds, to getit. You can bet ESPN is salivating over it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If Alabama is the #1 seed, why would they have to play #3

Dec 5, 2016, 12:41 PM

Seed Ohio?

Bama is undefeated. Why should they play the 3 see in the first round?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Buckeye would beat Bama

Dec 5, 2016, 1:35 PM

Especially since OSU could beat Bama so then we wouldn't have to play them... and likely would be fairly banged up after that battle so we would have an advantage.

IDK - Wash secondary looks good but no way Brownings floater passes work against bammer. And Nick will just run it straight at them steamroll style. Probably why they put that snoozer of a match up as the early game.
