Mangey AF, QB play 2022:
Jun 28, 2022, 9:35 AM

Does anyone really believe DJ will improve enough to take us to the playoff? I could see him maybe leading us to an ACC title, but can't see him going undefeated or even with one loss. If he is the QB, I'd say 2 losses probably.
The biggest issue with DJ is his quickness, mentally and physically. TL and DW were able to get the ball out quick, and if not, were able to elude the D with quick movement. A ton of the sacks last year were on DJ not the OL because he held the ball too long. He has a strong enough arm to be able to drill it to the sideline when under pressure and must learn to do this. His 2nd biggest issue is his inconsistent accuracy. He needs to develop more of a touch passing ability.
Everyone says the new QB is great, but I'll reserve judgement until he plays in a live game against a P5 opponent. No way I'm going to be calling for this guy if DJ struggles without seeing him at least play some and well against a P5 opponent. I know he's a big-time recruit but so was Hunter Johnson who was terrible and worse than DJ while at NW. he eventually got beat out by coot Hilinski.
I'm thinking we'll see the new kid in the 2nd quarter against Tech, kind of like TL against A&M in 2018. Hoping both QBs play good, but if DJ struggles and Klubnik tears it up, get ready for some huge drama in Tigertown. I can't wait.

He will start and struggle against GT.
Not sure Cade will play much more than a series or two against GT.

Something was obviously very, very wrong with DJ last

season. As a high school player he was one of the best, if not THE best QB in the country. He validated that completely with his play, on the field, in actual games, with outstanding play in his freshman year at Clemson. He hss what it takes, and he showed it, under pressure, against top competition, with games on the line and the team on his shoulders. Then, last year, something was very obviously, very very wrong. To his credit, he has made no excuses. Dabo, rightly or wrongly, has offered no explanation for what we can all see, as if it didn't even happen. This may be the correct way to handle it, it may be the only way, but it only leaves the door open for all kinds of rumor and speculation. Personally, I'd love to see DJ return to top form; that would be great for Clemson, and great for him as well. Any hate or negative comments or attitudes by Clemson fans toward DJ blows my mind - he's done nothing to deserve any of that. If his struggles continue, and he does indeed portal out of here, I don't blame him one bit; it's the world we live in and he's good enough to play somewhere. I'm going to wish him well either way, and I don't understand why all Clemson fans wouldn't.

been his injured finger, or his bad knee, or that he was having family problems, or that the offense in general sucked (aside from him), or that his WRs underperformed, or that he needed to rest up for a few games and heal, but couldn't because we had ZERO back up, any number of things that could or could not be better or resolved at this point. Bottom line, it's a competition, and hopefully he's healthy and that brings out the best in all concerned.

His problem was way more than physical skills and the bad throws.
Poor and slow decision making.
Staring down receivers.
Unless that changes, we are limited as a team.

was a factor. He faced what was maybe the best defense in the country on day one. He comes in with emotional/family baggage. He's in a fairly hostile environment. I just don't know that he ever got his head right again after that.
The good news is, if there is a coach in the world that can fix his emotional issues, it's got to be Dabo.

One of the games was against Bryce Young's HS, and it was pretty tight as I remember it. At the time I thought "Ok, If these two guys see each other again in another Clemson-Bama rematch, we're gonna do just fine"

Average QB play in 2021 and we may have won the natty.
Jun 28, 2022, 9:58 AM

It won't take much improvement to get us back to the playoff, given the conference we play in.
If the defense is 90% of what it was last year and the run game improves then we should go undefeated. What happens in the playoff is another story.
But, no, I do not think DJ will improve substantially. And I think he's going to have a LOT of opportunity to prove his lack of improvement.

You're right. This is pretty mangey. But, since the season draws close I would prefer to discuss fouwtbawl here than in the mange. And, I agree with your assessment. I remember DW and TL having a few rough spots along the way on but they did redeem themselves. DJ doesn't give me the warm fuzzies. I hope he has a Heisman year. Could be an interesting year fo sho. Problem for me is I will probably be off the grid for the first few games. We all make sacrifices! Carry on with yo mangey self...just no P&R.

to get better. Yes, he held the ball too long, but the O-Line often was of no help, not to mention the receivers.
His biggest issues is his generosity with the ball and wanting to be sure the other team gets a chance at it. He threw the only touchdown in the UGA game, pretty sure there was a pick 6 in the Pitt game, and can't imagine the turnover against NC State wasn't devastating. This generosity also allowed FSU to hang and Iowa State to hang around. Clean that up and things will be better.

a LONG way off from playing in a meaningful game. To me he needs to put on about 30 lbs. to even survive as a full-time QB. I didn't get the same feeling watching him this spring as i did with Watson and Lawrence.
But maybe that's what we need, a good quarterback, not another "generational" talent.

One hand touch for a sack, and splitting the starting Oline into 2 teams against our D isn’t gonna be a good look for any offense.
I think Cade will win out after a few games. I’m done w DJ.

As long as Cade can stay healthy I could see him taking over after a bit or see DJU and Cade splitting time. Cade is really skinny though. He seems like needs a year in the weight room to handle the beating. Jmo

Also, they came in the same , but Watson put on some serious muscle by the start of the season. Hopefully Cade can do the same. I am sure he is giving 100%. Dabo was claiming he needs it, so I am sure it wont be from lack of effort.

with DJ in one offseason. I hope I am 100% wrong, but he had multiple issues. I have re-watched most of the games from last year. As others have said: staring down the primary receiver and not going through progressions... you watch his helmet and typically it doesn't move, he's not scanning the field. And he seldom seemed comfortable in the pocket, kinda jittery, and holding on to the ball too long and/or not taking off when he should. Also firing bullets after the secondary has had time to react... you kinda hold your breath... the safety is now closing in on our WR and about to break him in half if he goes up for that ball that's a bit too high and slightly behind him.
And no "touch" on simple passes. I remember Jerry Rice saying that Montana threw the most "catchable ball" of any QB he'd ever seen. A nice tight spiral with a little air under it. No need to throw bullets...
Just so many things. I am no QB coach or analyst, but I got eyes and a half century watching football. Again, I hope he proves me wrong.
